Union College: 2016-2017

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Looks like Union could incur some big losses. The gutter ball rolled last weekend can not possibly diminish an amazing season for a team picked seventh in the league. With awards abounding for players and coach, enhanced by TWO Hobey finalists, one has to be impressed by Rick Bennett's ability. Should Nate Leaman be seduced by a fat contract at one of the big vacancies, Providence would likely be on the phone to Schenectady pretty quickly.

Interesting viewpoint - that "gutter ball" is somebody's fault - if you can't get the team up for the ECAC playoffs and then the sweet 16 then something is wrong
and that is the same Rick B who coached the two years prior to this one, right ?? - That is how/why they were picked to finish 7th...
Like some of the guys leaving school early - there is still room to grow/improve...

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Union announces that Spencer Foo is giving up his senior year, but likely won't sign anywhere until the summer.

After the year he had, it's hard to blame him for leaving. There isn't much doubt that Foo is ready for the next step. With Foo's brother coming in, I thought he might stay to play with him for a year. But it apparently isn't meant to be. It's obviously another huge blow to Union.

I figured Foo was going to leave if given the chance. Good for him! And he wrote a nice little piece explaining his decision. Hard work on and off the ice brings good things, he deserves it. Congrats to him.
As for the others potentially leaving... it would be a surprise to me, but you never know.

Is there a list of our recruits for next year somewhere?

Commitment years can kind of be in flux, especially in a situation like this when players leave early. Someone could be brought in early, like Pontarelli was when Jooris left.

Wow, what a great piece he wrote.. very heartfelt, and nice that the school released it. I don't remember any players (certainly at Union) who have done something like this in the past. Strikes me as a very classy act, clears the air and doesn't leave anyone hanging. He certainly didn't have to explain himself to anyone, as players who get 50+ points in college hockey are seldom expected to stay, and is really touching to this fan that he did so in such an appreciative & humble manner. I wish him nothing but the best and am sure he'll be successful in whatever endeavors he chooses to pursue. The excitement and passion he brought to the game will be missed but not forgotten.

Vecchione will become a Flyer today. Should see some time with the big club.

Vecks reunited with Ghost.. sounds like he got a good deal. Congrats!

In related news, Vecks is Hobey Hat Trick with Aston-Reese and Denver D-man Will Butcher and Bennett is up for National COTY (auto after being named ECAC COTY so not a surprise). Really not sure what Vecks chances are.. his stats are nearly identical to A-R's and Butcher is best player on the #1 team in the country. Hope the bad ending to the season doesn't hurt him, as would be another first for the program.

There is also rumor speculation on the MSU thread that Bennett & Leaman are in the running (or should be) for the coaching job there. The other very likely BIG opening will be at nearby U of M where is widely anticipated that Red Berenson will be retiring. Not sure if Bennett would get either of these positions, but he certainly has the resume to be in the running and they possibility that Nate would leave Providence would obviously open up a position there that could be attractive to Bennett since he played & coached there in the past. Would not be happy if he left, but totally understand that U is lower on the prestige and pay scale from the big name D-1 programs. We'll have to wait and see..

Reunited... Philadelphia media says Vecchione has moved in with Ghost and could debut Tues at NJ.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Hopefully Vech plays tonight vs the Rangers.
Would be a great way to start his career playing with Ghost at the Garden.
Good luck to him as he starts his pro career and thank you for all of the great memories. My personal favorite is still his goal vs BC in the Semi's. His goal vs Minny was not bad either :)

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Vech plays his first pro game vs Devils
Who would have thought that 3 ex Union stars would be playing in the same NHL game. Pretty cool how far this program has come.
