Union College: 2016-2017

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Quote from Fogarty on Wednesday:

So excuse Fogarty if he wasn’t willing to look ahead to the next round, where, starting Friday, his team will face a stacked Union squad that features both leading scorers in the conference, Mike Vecchione and Spencer Foo.

“Let me just enjoy this one first for a second,” said the always affable bench boss with a laugh. “I don’t want to worry about Vecchione, I don’t want to worry about Foo. ... "

Bennett and the rest of us were extremely worried about Princeton and with good cause.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Time to book rooms at Lake Placid
- 4.5 to 5 hr drive for the Crimson & the Big Red & Qpack
- 2.0 to 2.5 hr drive from Schenectady
- 1.5 hr drive for the Noth Country teams

In 2014 Cornell had a huge turnout .....
Never imagined we would make it this far ...

Oh ye of so little faith.... They are not perfect but they won't quit .. so we shouldn't doubt either
If last night proved one thing though -- it was STAY OUT OF THE PENALTY BOX...
(btw - not sure how Princeton wasn't in it a bunch more)
They didn't play well but when they needed to turn it on they did..
Go U !!

What a game! I couldn't think of a more appropriate way to end the season for the Hobey Baker candidate captain who has done so much for the team and the fans. Scoring on a penalty shot after a disallowed OT goal, which was only possible because of the tying goal in the last minute of the third - unbelievable. This is truly a team that never gives up. Now we get to go cheer them on in Lake Placid. Go U!

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Northeastern and NH are finished for the year and we have 2-3 games in hand on them. We are looking at at least two and possibly six more games. Its a long shot but both Vec and Foo can still end up as the top scorers in the country. Something for the whole league to be proud of.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

If my analysis is correct, we have only lost one game on a Friday all season. That was against Harvard when Sak was out.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Just have to take care of our own business and let Haaavad and the Q
beat each other senseless .... go U !

That is sort of the way we feel about Union and Cornell. Pound each other into the ice.

On a completely different and more positive note, congrats to Vecchione and Foo being named finalists for the Hobey. I think it comes down to Vecchione and Sheehy. Both have had monster seasons.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Cornell is a period 1 team. They like to score early and then suffocate you. Clarkson got a 2 goal lead in game one in the first period and keep the pressure up in their 6-2 game. We need to do the same thing. The larger ice may give us a slight edge. We need to score early and often.

More importantly, we need to score one more goal than them ;)
What has hindered our team the most, IMO, is the fact that they let their foot off the gas sometimes... (like for 2 whole periods against Princeton)
Don't know if it's coaching, or the players trying too hard to do well, but at this point in the season, it needs to be all out, all the time. We need 6 wolves on the ice for 60 minutes, hungry for the puck to end up in the back of the net.

Also: PLEASE coach, let Pontarelli play with a good line!!! (don't throw him in with Eli and some other slow guy)

Cornell did get a 3-1 lead on Union in Schenectady, only to give it up by the 3rd period. Union was able to keep coming after Kupsky settled down. The game in Ithaca was a little more even. I think Union has the edge with their speed on the larger ice and with Sak back in net (provided nothing happens between now and tomorrow night), but Cornell knows how to play defensively and Mitch Gillam is a solid goaltender. I'll be interested in seeing what lineup Rick Bennett puts out there.

Despite the outcome, it'll be nice to see Union in Lake Placid again. :D

If the team bus could leave Vecchione and Foo in Schenectady, that would be great. Thanks! ;)

Should be a good game tomorrow night. Here's to a clean, hard-checking game that isn't decided by the zebras. Cheers.
