Union College: 2016-2017

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Vech and Foo have both had great seasons. It is hard for me to pick one over the other.
Come playoff time who will provide that secondary offensive production that is crucial to winning come crunch time. If you look at the career scoring production for post season play you see some names like Novak, Sullivan & Hatch who contributed consistently at playoff time.
Who will deliver in the clutch this year.........
The puck drops Friday. Let's go U !

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

I think the defensive numbers are a little deceiving, as there was a pretty big improvement in both overall defense and Sak's goaltending between the first and second halves of the season. The first couple months were very inconsistent defensively. The team gave up a lot of shots at times, were prone to terrible turnovers, and had some off nights in goal. Things tightened up considerably in the New Year, including an improved commitment to blocking shots. This seemed to coincide with players like Dufour, Burton, & ZachE being in the lineup more and the return of Campbell on defense. Sak also seemed to get in a groove and was at slightly over 2 goals per game GAA and 93% save percent over the last 2 months. Kupsky didn't fare quite as well, which hurt the numbers a bit. Not saying that defense and goaltending aren't concerns going into the post-season, but I think there is some reason for optimism compared with earlier in the season. One of the keys is whether Sak can get back in the groove. Not sure we exactly saw that in the last 4 games - that last goal against Cornell was of the big juicy rebound variety. Hopefully the bye week has Alex refreshed and back on his game.

Princeton is going to be a tough team to play. They have youth, talent & confidence coming off a very tight series with Gate. If U can get on top of them early, maybe can get the Tigers to doubt themselves a bit, but I'm overall expecting a tough physical series that could go 3 games. Other than the seniors, there actually isn't much post-season experience on the team and most of it is of the one-series-and-done variety, so I'm not sure U has a big advantage there. Where U does have the advantage is with 2 of the best forwards in the country, who hopefully can pull off some post season magic.

As for Hobey, I have to think that Veccs will be in the running and should be a finalist. There really isn't a player or two that put up Eichel or Johnny-Hockey like numbers, so its pretty wide open in my book. The most impressive stats out there might belong to Canisius goaltender Charles Williams with a 94% saves/1.83 GAA, but he has the double whammy of they don't usually go for goalies and AHA is seen as a weaker conference. Given the way Veccs (& Foo) carried the team early in the season and the mostly unexpected success the team had, may help his cause.

Also notice that Bennett is up for ECAC COTY along with Donato and Fogarty. I think all 3 are deserving, but have been very impressed with U's coaches this season and the improvement of so many players both off-season and during the season.

While I'm rooting for Union, analytics suggest they are very unlikely to win an NCAA title this year. Here's the biggest issue:

Thus far this calendar year, Union's GAA is 2.79 (2.74 for full season). That's higher than it's been for any season since 2006-07 - and it's not even close. Note that from 2010-2014, their highest GAA was 2.12. Typically, when a team drives offensive possession as Union does, shots and goals against are greatly reduced. Not so for this Union team. Furthermore, amongst the current top 16 PairWise teams, Union's defensive numbers are in the bottom four for both goals against and PK efficiency. That's a big reason they're 3-4-1 against top 16 teams. Because of this defensive production (even with Sak) their win probability against quality teams (NCAA tournament) has been, and will remain, low.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

I beg to differ on your evaluation of the two..1st and foremost what next level are you talking about.. who knows how anyone will play the NEXT level????? Are you the hockey clairvoyant who knows who is going to excel at the next level. If so do you know who wins Natty this year so I can bet on it .

What separate's the 2 players you reference Vechs has been a steady and productive player for 4 season..
Freshman 34 point 1st line center on Natty Team..
sophomore 50 point Hobey Nominee (his linemate -senior Champini went on to top 10)
Junior 30 points fastest to reach 100 points (record) MVP
Senior 58 points and counting broke all time school record for scoring 171 and counting, numerous other records this year.

Foo is having a breakout season but inconsistent in the past and at times too fancy. He should do well and be the man next season with his brother coming in .it will be interesting to see if he stays for his senior year or try and capitalize on this 1 season and jumps ship

No I am not clairvoyant but I do have hockey eyes just like you do. It is merely just one man's opinion and plainly stating what I see. I think you are missing the point, like I have said many times as competitor of yours...I just want great and safe hockey play and both guys provides that. They are both great in their own way, players that I like to watch play and much rather see in a Green and White jersey instead of wreaking havoc in our D zone

I don't believe this team "drives offensive possession" as much as they just come in waves..
When you turn on that "pack of wolves" tenacity Bennett preaches in the offensive end and don't put it in the net
it usually results in everybody out of position to play anything resembling the kind of defense you have described
with shot blocking and no available rebounds - they just can't get enough bodies back there that fast.
They have been pretty solidly under 3.0 GA - except for that Harvard game where the quick (and very ugly) 4 and
2 empty netters made it look really bad.

We are also 1-3-2 against the other top 4 teams in the ECAC. (I know that Sak was absent for at least two of those loses)

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Let's get a win tonight, and a win tomorrow. That'll be a good start. I don't care how, it needs to be 2 Ws in a row. Watched Princeton play last week: they are a very aggressive and physical team, with an annoying forecheck. If we can control play in our zone, we should be ok. If they do, we're screwed.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

You guys are so lucky to have playoff hockey this weekend, cherish it as I don't. Hope they don't take P-ton lightly, that would be a big mistake. Good luck and hope you get to Lake Placid at least.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

It has been a couple of years since playoff hockey was last played at Messa Rink and it will be exciting to see how this team handles the additional significance. Ideally, we would see a return to the way the team played against Harvard at home - their best game of the year IMO. The defense was playing on another level.

Princeton should make things interesting and either way we are lucky to have home games this weekend. Go U!

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Game day......
Playoff hockey returns to Messa
A new season begins play each shift with desperation and confidence.
Princeton is playing some really good hockey.
If Union brings its A game for 60 minutes I like our chances.
Let's go U !

The numbers I'm hanging on are that since the BU game (admittedly a defensive debacle), the team has a 2.08 GAA with Sak in goal. Is this cherry picking numbers for my own devices?? Probably. Probably not fair to say that Sak would have done better than Kupsky in the Cornell & Harvard losses, but I do think the team was significantly better defensively over the last 2 months with Sak in goal. I also cling to what I saw in the Harvard game at Messa, which as UnionFan notes was 60-minutes of defense that the team had not approached before that. They did pretty much the same thing to Qpac a month later too. Can the team bottle that and pull it out in big games against top competition? I don't know but would like to think they could. My feeling is they likely won't win ECACs or get to a Frozen Four, but the farther they get in the post-season the more they will be a team that nobody wants to play.

Another interesting stat, against the bottom 8 teams in ECAC Union is an astounding 15-1-0. The flip side of course is the 1-3-2 against the teams likely to be in Lake Placid. U has beaten the teams they are supposed to beat and hopefully that continues tonight.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

A very nice win......
Princeton will come out flying on Saturday night
Union will have to match their intensity and desperation for 60 minutes.
If we bring our A game for 60 minutes Union will be tough to beat.
Vech continues to be fantastic with another 3 point night.
Let's go U !

Let's fix the few issues that appeared during the game, keep doing our thing, and we're good.

Last night's lineup. We played our fastest (and mostly smallest) lineup.

Bennett
-Game was much closer than score and could have gone either way
-Princeton is an excellent team
-Hardest to end another team's season
-Princeton is deceptively fast - got to get back

Against Princeton, Colgate won the first then lost the next two.
