Union College: 2016-2017

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Game day !
I like our chances on the big ice if we bring our A game for 60 minutes.
We will need to stay out of the box and get all four lines rolling.
Cornell has an excellent team with a very good goalie we will need to play our best hockey to beat these guys.
Let's go U !

Agreed - go fast and keep the feet moving - Cornell will grab you..

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

End of first: we are being physically dominated. We are pushed and shoved away from all the pucks, checked away from any pass, and generally physically not in the game. Hoping for a different 2nd and 3rd period. Let's remember that to win a game, you need to score, and to score you need the puck. 6 shots on goal per period is not going to cut it. If we do nothing more and Cornell keeps doing what they're doing (and they're doing it well), it's going to be a long and painful game.
Kudos to Cornell for a well executed first period.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Sorry we won't see you guys tomorrow. Cornell came to play in a big way tonight. They were dominant in so many phases of the game. Thought maybe it would go to OT. Maybe we'll see you at the Frozen Four.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

We never righted the ship... and Cornell played a good game, and perfectly executed their game plan!

I don't think the big ice is good for our game at all. Not all our players can adjust to the extra length and pace needed to complete the passes (look at the number of unforced turnovers!!!!). Our game is good in a short and fast perimeter, but not good at all when slowed down. It looked like a lack of experience a bit.
Oh well, maybe they can play well tomorrow, and try something in the regionals (should we make it there), but at this point I'm happy with the season, and wouldn't be upset if it ended now.
Anything from here on is just a bonus :)
Go Union!!!!!!

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Wow that was a bummer.....
I never thought Cornell would out skate us on the big sheet.
Not much to cheer about but I did think Scarfo was flying
Congrats to Cornell clearly the better team won tonight.
Union will need to regroup fast and get ready for the NCAA' tourney.
If they don't play better than tonight they will be one and done.
This team is better than what they showed against Cornell.
They will get a chance to prove that hopefully next week.

Union came out very sluggish - "Winter Finals Funk" ??
Gliding instead of striding far too often...
Cornell came to play and played their game...
Some questionable penalty calls and some non calls too but overall we were outplayed - badly in the first and 2nd periods ..
Kudos to Scarfo - he was like the energizer bunny out there..
Coach went with the speed lineup again - We could have used some beef on defense a few times...
If Cornell can match that intensity again tomorrow they can take Harvard too..

Not sure I blame the bigger ice sheet for what I observed tonight..
I think more along the lines of those big bodies with wide wingspans in the passing lanes and
rushing because of the pressure being applied.. Cornell controlled the ice ..

Comment from an outsider. I'd love to see Cornell win. My first college hockey game was at Yale when Ken Dryden was in net for Cornell, but Harvard is scary good right now.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Great turnout by the faithful !!! IMO we had the largest fan base of the four teams on Friday.

I thought the bigger ice sheet would favor your skating game but I guess that wasn't the case. I've been surprised that Cornell has out skated you guys both at Messa and last night. Just does not seem like the Cornell teams I've watched in the past under Schaefer's guidance. Hopefully Harvard learned some lessons from watching your game and adjusts accordingly tonight.

The Captain Obvious conclusion is that the "common opinion" that Union would have an advantage on the larger ice surface was dead wrong. The team may have thought they could just outskate or skate around Cornell all night, but ignored that you still have to win puck battles and control the puck. Puck control is really very essential on the big ice, because once you lose it the other team usually has room to make a dangerous play. For some reason, Union's D kept banging pucks up the boards trying to breakout and "guess who" was waiting for them and winning the puck battles. The team 3 years ago had 3-4 Dmen that could beat the first forechecker and make a play through the center of the ice - this year's team really only has Taylor, with maybe Kolias on rare occasions though its usually a little scary with him (he is just a freshman). If you can do that, then you can cause all kinds of problems for your opponent. U's D wasn't able to do that. In a nutshell, Cornell won almost all the important puck battles and they spread the ice well and controlled the puck much better. As we've discussed on here, U is not really the greatest puck possession team and that bit them last night. Also needs to be noted that while the Big Red overall are very big, their D-corps is actually more average size and skates & handles the puck very well. They outplayed U's D by a mile last night.

Way too bad, as it spoiled an otherwise nice day where Bennett got COTY, Vecks was League MVP, and 3 others made All-ECAC. Will almost certainly now be a 3 seed in NCAAs and most likely will be sent out west. Hopefully the boys can regroup and make amends - Yale did a pretty nice job of that 4 years ago after flaming out in ECAC's.

The D struggled all night -- way too many times a Cornell player was left absolutely alone in front of Sak..
They need to be reminded they are DEFENSEmen and that means guard your net - can't do that in the corner or out at the blue line.
As for the larger ice.. they didn't make the easy simple short passes so never got the chance to stretch the ice
clear your zone first - you are right about that -- But still comes down to an awesome job by their guys blocking shots,
jumping on pucks there goalie didn't grab and of course a solid job in net ...

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

I agree with Pokey too many turnovers killed Union.
We also lost most of the battles on the wall.
Give credit to Cornell for playing great hockey and taking Vech/Foo and Union out of the game for the most part.
You can't beat a team like Cornell playing 7 to 8 minutes of your A game. When we have beaten Cornell in the past we have been able to take them off their game by moving our feet and beating them to the puck and controlling possession. Last night Cornell did that to Union.
Maybe this team was not ready for the moment of a big game like this.
Hopefully they learn from the experience and it can benefit them in the NCAA tourney.
This team has exceeded expectations all year and now they have another chance to show their resolve and resilience in bouncing back next week.
One thing is for sure if they only play 8 minutes of A hockey they are in big trouble bring it for 60 minutes and they can compete and beat anyone.
Let's hope for the big bounce back.
Let's go U !

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

For anyone in Unionland looking for rooting interests tonight, looks like U would finish 8th in PairWise and potentially snag a #2 seed if any 2 of the following 3 outcomes happen:
- BC beats UML
- Harvard beats Cornell
- UMD beats North Dakota

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

If U moves down to a 3 seed they could play either BU, Western Michigan or U Mass Lowell. If they stay at a 2 seed they could play Penn State or North Dakota. Typically the selection committee will take attendance into consideration especially with the 2 & 3 seeds.. The year Yale won the NC I believe they were a 4 seed which is why they went out West.
It will be interesting to see how the brackets play out.
Great for U to be back in the NCAA tourney.
A terrific accomplishment for the team considering the modest preseason predictions.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

If Union, BU, and UMass Lowell are all 2 seeds, does that mean we'd get shipped out west because they'd want to put the two Massachusetts teams (and higher ranked 2 seeds) in Providence and Manchester??

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

If Penn State wins it will be interesting to see if they jump Union into the 8th spot/final 2nd seed. If Union is a 2 seed I would think they go out West/Midwest if they are a 3 seed maybe they stay in the east .
Stay tuned........
Congrats to an excellent Harvard team for winning the ECAC Tourney.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Union will finish in 8th in the Pairwise Rankings and will be the lowest ranked 2 seed regardless of the outcome of Penn State/Wisconsin.

If Penn State wins, they will be #9 overall and UMass Lowell will be #5 (the highest ranked 2 seed).

If Wisconsin wins, UMass Lowell becomes #4 overall and the lowest ranked 1 seed.

We want UMass Lowell to be a 1 seed so they stay out of the 2 band.
