Union College: 2016-2017

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

That was a clean, hard, hard hit. Sweetman is one of, if not the best defensive, d-men in the league. All year long he has been handing out good, hard, clean hip checks in particular. It has been a pleasure watching him for four years.

What a great college hockey game tonight. Union is scary how well they can control the play, cycle down low and keep the puck in the attacking zone for extended periods of time. We don't have the snipers you have.......but we have a lot of grit and I'm sure it was a big lift to get Bayreuther back. Tonight was his first game since hand surgery and he didn't even practice this week. Just went out there and played. He was on the ice and largely responsible for giving up the second and third goals but once he gets his legs back and his hand heals more he'll be his old self again. He creates so many offensive chances for us as shown by the goal he scored. Our offense is so much stronger when he is on the ice.

A really fun game to watch and a tie would have been a fitting ending as both teams played really well.

- Top Definition. hip check. to physically impact someone at the hip by using the hip.
USA hockey rule 620 - A minor plus a misconduct or major plus a game misconduct penalty shall be assessed to any player who contacts an opponent in the head, face or neck
So here is the hit -- skates far off the ice (you can see the bottom of both blades) -- hit is above the shoulders
so I would say it is NOT a hip check and IS a hit to the head..

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Yes he is being targetted and since it is very obvious and I might add illegal wouldn't it be the job of the refs
to make it stop - The defense would be hard pressed (at 155-160 pounds and skating backwards) to do anything about a 180-190 pound
man going full speed forward making a beeline for the goalie.. The d-man was there - he was driven right through Sak..
Lucky they both weren't hurt.. It is the forwards job to avoid the goalie ..

Rick Bennett does not tell his forwards to avoid the goalie, and neither does any other successful coach. And no, as we've seen, the referees aren't going to make it stop. It's clear that opponents now recognize their best chance against Union is in driving the net and trying to intimidate Sak. We'll see a lot of it the rest of the way.

Union is skilled and fun to watch. I hope they can keep their goaltender healthy.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Lol SLU fans are as uneducated as it gets, all they do is scream for grinder Woody Hudson to try and go hurt someone, he jumped, it was high, it was a charge, Sweetman should not be in the lineup vs. Clarkson, it's as simple as that unless we are trying to give other players concussions.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

How many more points do you think Union needs to lock up a top four finish to get a bye/home ice in the playoffs ?

if you listened to the broadcast on their production - the announcers believed that all their penalties were bad calls, Union guys going down were stepping on
the SLU sticks and the Vidmar hit was a good clean hip check. -- Must be in the water.. although the accent was surely Boston transplant ..

They broke Hitchcock's leg the week before, so you guys got off easy.

That "accent" would belong to one former Coach, Joe Marsh. I'd wager he knows more about the game of hockey than most any fan on USCHO. That said, I'll admit our play by play guy can be biased at times.

/shrug, can't please everybody and you get what you pay for ;)

That "Boston transplant" that you speak of happens to be the former 25+ season St. Lawrence University hockey coach Joe Marsh. He has been doing the radio broadcast this year for the men's home games. But you would know this if you took yourself out of your Union hockey bubble every once in awhile. So, who should we all take our advise from, Option #1 which is someone with only 38 posts and a solid red reputation on the USCHO fan forum or Option #2, who is a legend in the college hockey world who was coaching the team before Union was even a Division 1 program? ... I think any "educated" fan will side with Option #2. But if you don't get any of what I posted above, that's okay too. It must just be something in your water.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Delayed payback for Justin Baker getting his knee turned into a pretzel by Yale a handful of years ago. That wasn't a penalty, either ;)

There have been a lot of rough hits between SLU and Yale in the past ten years. The games now are actually tame compared to a few years ago.

Interesting you look into the red rep and the green rep, I have had green rep for years until today as I'm assuming some SLU fans gave me a few reviews. To be honest I could care less and I will express my opinion that Sweetmans hit was to the head and hits like that lead to concussions which I would hope no fan supports. Vidmar is ok from what people have said but the point is to get it through the kids head to not do it again.

Yes, most people do (or should) look into someones red and/or green rep. You can learn a lot about a certain poster based upon what you see from those colors. As if the obvious view from behind your rose colored glasses wasn't enough for all of us to make a conclusion about you, we also have your "off the scale" reputation to back it up. It's important to some people what your reputation is.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Rick Bennett does not tell his forwards to avoid the goalie, and neither does any other successful coach. .

And you would know what Rick Bennett tells his forwards How exactly?
In the two games this weekend Sak was run no less than 9 times, while the other goalie wasn't hit once
directly by a Union forward.. that would appear to indicate they tried to miss him don't cha think?

There is a line between accidental crashing into the goalie when the defense "helps you into him" and actually just running the man down..
Several of the Clarkson ones met the standard for Charging...

Well I appreciate all of the negative reviews from your fans, I guess it makes me a bad person that I'd like these athletes to stay safe. I will continue to express my views on these forums as a red reputation or a green reputation.

You posted multiple times calling out a player directly for what you deemed to be a dirty hit, then you try and say that one of our other players is taught to "try and go hurt someone" on the ice. Then you proceed to continue even further by calling our fans "as uneducated as they get" and then try and come for our radio broadcaster who just so happens to be a former 25+ year college hockey coach. So, now when people don't approve of your rotten attitude and call you out on your sour grapes you get all defensive and try to play the woe is me card? ... How typical!

First of all it's a well known fact Woody Hudson is one of the toughest guys in the nation and has actually injured people during fights in junior hockey. I was at the game and the crowd just moans and groans for calls left and right. A student before the game yelled out "Your mom is a wh***" to a Union player being announced, I was directly across the ice from the student and I saw a staff member come down and seem to ask who did it, I was watching the whole time and not one student was removed, that's sad. I know Joe Marsh knows his stuff, I have never said anything bad about Joe Marsh, I was giving an opinion on a questionable hit along with stating a fact in the type of player Hudson is.

Here if you haven't seen him fight here you go - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8Ho8YUgH5E

Actually, the guy who was yelling during the national anthem was removed from the game and rightfully so. There is no room for that sort of behavior during the anthems. It is extremely disrespectful and the staff handled the situation correctly and had him removed. In fact, he is a St. Lawrence student who is now banned from coming to Saints hockey games for the way he was acting to the staff when they tried to remove him ... So, once again you've managed to see something and are trying to turn into around to fit the narrative with which you are trying to push. Not everyone is out to get your team, not everyone is out to injury your players and not everyone goes to hockey games to "whine and moan" about everything they see that they don't like. Watch the game, enjoy the game, then go home and live your life. You're constant *****ing about everything is seriously obnoxious.
