Union College: 2016-2017

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Interesting dialog on the St. Lawrence Site

I respect your opinion, I just have my opinion of Sweetman charged at Vidmar to cut space away as a great D would, Vidmar may have slipped a tad and lost his balance allowing his head to go lower but it still was contact to the head and with the attention concussions draw now I feel it should be a suspension. I have seen headshots that have been issued suspensions in this league over many years that are not even close to this hit so who knows, I'm pretty sure Union has to file for it to be reviewed and judging by how the assistant coaches were going at it from center ice a bit I'm assuming that was brought up. If it is filed and there is not a suspension given out then ECAC Hockey will continue the trend of being inconsistent.

Nope, the Union assistant coach informed the St. Lawrence assistant coach that he thinks Hayton is a A-hole and that Hayton would get what was coming to him if they see each other again in the playoffs. Nothing was said about the hit.

Bennett has, in the past, referred to Hayton as the best goalie in College Hockey, in the nation. I do not believe a Union Assistant Coach ever said such a thing and I believe Bennett would fire him if he did. I always thought of St. Lawrence as having a classy team with classy fans. Go figure.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

I noticed Hayton was egging on the crowd to be louder during the timeout after the last goal, so maybe the Union coaches took offense at that.. don't know. There did seem to be more than the normal "pleasantries" being exchanged by the coaching staffs after the game, though obviously couldn't tell what was being said. Either way, its probably just gamesmanship on both sides as there is a decent chance that the two teams will meet again under bigger circumstances.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Would love to see these two teams play again in Lake Placid. Lots of hockey still to be played. Let's go U !

Bennett and the assistant didn't say anything about Hayton being a bad goalie, the assistant said Hayton acts like a jerk. If you watch Hayton in between whistles he goes after people all the time and has to many teams said stuff to their benches and made gestures. Hayton is an unbelievable goalie but he has that streak in him and has been that way since he got to SLU. Just about every team they have played complains about his actions between whistles. Just was trying to point out nothing was said between the coaches about the hit.

What if that really was what was said between the Union Assistant Coach and our coaches (which it was)? Does that make the fans who heard about it and simply stated what it was that was said somehow less classy? I don't think it does. He didn't state or even imply anything negative about the Union Assistant Coach or any of their coaches for that matter, he just simply posted what was actually said. Nothing wrong with that at all.

I would love to see that as well as this last game was a fun game to watch and that would be one heck of a game, especially on the big sheet in Lake Placid ... Let's Go Saints! :)

Indeed, it would be a heck of a game!
Go Union!

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Looking forward to the final stretch run for Union. Some really tough games ahead but I think this team will be up for the challenge. This group has proven to be very resilient they have had a very good season now to finish it up with a top four finish. Would love to see them bring the Cleary Cup back to Messa but a bye / home ice would be terrific.
One game at a time......Go U !

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Cornell is a "heavy" team in their size and how they play. We have not always done well against heavy teams. Cornell is the fourth tallest and forth heaviest team in DI. We are giving away about 10 lbs per man.

The Big Red led Dartmouth 2-0 after the first period on Saturday, but the Big Green scored four unanswered goals on its way to a 4-2 win at Lynah Rink.
It was the first time since Nov. 7, 2015, that the Big Red had lost a game in which it held a two-goal lead. It was also the second straight game that Cornell relinquished an early lead. It led Harvard 1-0 heading into the third period of Friday’s game before the Crimson rallied for a 4-1 win.
Read more: http://www.uscho.com/2017/02/01/cor...g-on-situations-it-can-control/#ixzz4XZy0Ltyi It also lead Clarkson 3-1 before being tied 3-3.

In the seven games since the beginning of the new year, Cornell has scored a total of 2 goals in total in the third period !!! In the first five of those games, they completely shut out their opponent in the third period. Leading up to Harvard/Dartmouth (18 games) Cornel has given up a total of 5 goals in period 3 in all of these 18 games, and never more than 1. Against Harvard, they gave up 4 and against Dartmouth they gave up 3 in the third period.

IMO Cornell is taking risks on offense to boost their scoring in the hopes of getting leads they can sit on and protect and protect in period 3. The last few minutes may determine the outcome of todays game.

Lost in the heartbreaking last second loss in Canton and "hit-gate" kerfuffle is that Vecks is now tied with Carr as U's all-time leading scorer (D-1)! Would be nice to see him set a new mark this weekend in front of the home fans. Litmus test game tonight with the Big Red. Getting out in front is always a good idea as it makes Cornell maybe take a few more chances offensively than they would normally want to, which is not there game. Will need a big game from Sak as it is guaranteed will be traffic in front of him and lots of screened shots. Should be a great atmosphere at the Messa.. Goooooo U!!!

Your game vs. Cornell tonight is airing on NESN Plus in the New England region. I'll be tuning in tonight after the conclusion of Colgate-RPI. Good luck!

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

It is also being broadcast in the Capital District area on TWC channel #1255, channel 6.2 (Albany) and on TSN in Canada.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

A tough loss to a very good Cornell team
Congrats Vech on surpassing Dan Carr as Union's all time leading scorer. An awesome achievement ,
I believe Carr still holds the post season scoring title hopefully Vech can make a run at that mark as well.
The team needs to bounce back and play a great 60 minutes tonight vs Colgate.

Go U !
