Union College: 2016-2017

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Went back and checked the game tape -- RPI #13 is one dirty player ...

puck was on the other side of the ice, player defenseless and delivers a shot to the face ..
Should have been ejected...since the ref was no more than 5 feet away ....

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Anyone know why Ken Schott is no longer the Gazette's beat reporter for Union hockey? His knowledge of the game and insights were always terrific.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

We are no longer "flying under the radar". HC is a solid hockey team, IMO the best in the AHA. Their new coach has produced a strong a defensive team and has a solid goaltender with similar stats to Alex. They are a period 3 team in scoring and shots. With two days rest we are going to have to dig deep in that third period.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Alex getting ECAC goalie of the week!
Now, if only he could maintain his save percentage and gaa :)

From what I read, he was "reassigned" to another coverage area. He's still going to be doing a "Slap Schotts"-esque show independently on Facebook.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Game not over, but so far:
PP fail
PK fail

On the PP, people look for shooting lanes that they see at practice, in a set up environment. They don't shoot in an open lane if there is one in front of them and it's not part of the setup. Also, NO movement... everyone is just standing still waiting for the puck and a magically open lane... Not sure I understand how we're supposed to score doing this. I'm all for set plays once in a while, but it should be the exception since the conditions are rarely all met. There is no reason why we can't put any shots on goal during a PP!!!

On the PK, we give the attacking team way too much space. There is at least 6-9 feet between our guy and the other player. So of course they can skate around, shoot the puck and do whatever. I understand the need to not over commit when you're down one man, but this is a bit much IMO. Look at what better teams than us do: the defense is in the other guys face. Yeah it's more tiring but you're avoiding players walking all over your zone at using your goalie for target practice.

You can tell our PP practices against our PK and I bet you they score.

Alright, back to the game. Go U!!!

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

A very well deserved win by Holy Cross! A very gritty team that wanted the W from the get go. They won lots of battles and it's reflected on the scoreboard.

Positives for U: not giving up, scoring the dirty goals.

We need some good rest now.

if you won a National Championship, especially as recently as you did, you don't fly under the radar.................we watch what you're doing.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Good call by Dutchman on stating HC is a 3rd period team
I am sure U would like to have those 7 minutes back where they gave up 3 goals....
Showed some grit fighting back which is nice to see.
Better be ready for 2 tough games this weekend.
Get some rest and come out flying on Friday....

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Great turnout by the faithful. We had more fans there than Holy Cross did !!! Very impressed with Cole Maier. He came to play. Great wake-up call for us.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Not to take anything away from Holy Cross, but one has to think Union's tank might have been a bit empty last night. It was their third game in five days, and that stretch included two emotionally charged games against top rival RPI. Meanwhile, Holy Cross hadn't played since Friday and was in the comforts of their own rink. Maybe there wasn't any other date to play the game, but the scheduling wasn't ideal for Union.

It appears Union will play Holy Cross over the next few years -

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Holy Cross coach David Berard said his team and Union will play each of the next 3 or 4 seasons, alternating home games <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/ECACHockey?src=hash">#ECACHockey</a></p>— Josh Seguin (@JoshSeguin24) <a href="https://twitter.com/JoshSeguin24/status/793638545298747392">November 2, 2016</a></blockquote>

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

An excellent description of this year's Yale team comes from LTscatch.
Yale still kind of an unknown, the new goalie Spano, has not really been proven yet, he has played well in the past during his short stints in goal over the past three years. Many freshmen starting due to injury and attrition, D is small but quick and more offensive minded than in the past few years. The first line of Hayden Hitchcock and Snively may turn out to be one of the best lines in the league, a real pleasure to watch. The Freshmen Smith Twins are on a line with DiChiara and play a great two way game, hope they stay four years. Offense and speed will be Yales game plan. The size of the D which is starting three Frosh may be the Achilles Heel, i could see stronger teams cycling on Yale to an advantage.

In years past Yale was known as an offensive team. Their coach does not emphasize either offense or defense. The past few years Lyons and their great defensemen put them at the top of the NCAA in defense.

We will be ready.

Does anyone know if we can get the pre-game/post-game press conferences somewhere?
It seems that Ken Schott is no longer covering college hockey, and the garnet hockey blog is no longer being updated. Any other journalists out there anymore?

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

He did not make the trip to Worcester. Rumor is he has a concussion.

should use caution repeating rumors.. Teams don't announce medical info because it paints a target on a player,
and a specific body part, for the upcoming opponents.. And if he doesn't have that particular injury he may after they
go after his head ... just sayin

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

"I think we learned that Holy Cross is a good team," Taylor said. "But we did not play our best game by any means. Maybe looking back, it might be a good thing that we lost that game. We're not a team that can take games off and win games. We've got to bring it every night."

Lets start with tonight against Yale !!!
GO U !!!
