Union College: 2016-2017

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Polls don't mean a lot this early in the season ...

Union:
Defeated #18 Michigan
Defeated #19 Yale

St. Lawrence:
Defeated #12 Penn State
Defeated (tied) # 8 Minnesota
Defeated #7 Quinnipiac

Clarkson:
Defeated #5 UMASS Lowell

St. Lawrence is undefeated and yet to be scored upon in League Play. Clarkson is undefeated on the Road. This is our last weekend before a long break, November 12 - December 2. After that, it's on the road for the next 6 games and most of the remainder of the season.

"We're not a team that can take games off and win games. We've got to bring it every night." We are not going to get away with one of these "last minute, come from behind" things against a goalie like Hayton.

That is one hell of a good St. Lawrence team ... I will take the point. No complaints.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Clarkson defeated #5 UML and tied #15 Providence
Clarson has scored 3 goals or more in its last 10 games.
Clarkson is ranked 16th in team offense.

They are slightly better than us in power plays and pk
They are 19.91 in Penalty Minutes and we are 11.42
Opposite of last year ... they are 3-0-1 on the road.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

One good point to take! Saint Lawrence plays well, has good puck movement, fights hard. It was a fun game to watch!

On to Clarkson!

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

That was a very good game by both teams. SLU was as advertised - excellent goaltending and defensemen. Bayreuther is a beast and one of the best d-men I've seen in a while. Game almost got away from U with those early penalties in the 2nd period, but Sak made a couple huge saves and the boys seemed to take control after that. Hayton's sliding blocker save in OT was incredible. Thought all the freshmen played very well and the team came together in a big way. Putting two fast players in Rinaldi & Burton with Eli (maybe slowest forward in college hockey) really seemed to work. Would have been nice to get the W but very happy with the tie. ..and I'll keep saying, what a privilege it is to watch that first line. They were just got better & better as the game went on and even SLU didn't really have an answer for them.

Clarkson will be better offensively and more physical than SLU, a special teams shootout could be dangerous. Hopefully get another good night from Sak and the boys can give an effort like last night. Another 2 big points on the line.

Hayton had an incredible night... he's why SLU walked away with a point. I'm not sure if there's another goalie in the league who would have made this save in particular. Union probably wins the game on that shot 95% of the time.

Secondary scoring is growing concern. Both of Union's goals -- and all of their points -- last night were picked up by the top line. It's not like there is a lack of talent behind them. Scarfo, surprisingly, only has three points. He's also a team-worst minus 10 (next worst on the team is -4). Supinski has eight assists, but no goals after finishing his freshman year tied for third on the team in that category. Brown and Rinaldi were the top two goal scorers in the OJHL last year. You have to hope that translates in time.

We came out smoking for the first five minutes but SL's early goal let some of the air out of the tires and we went flat. It took that penalty kill to get our mojo back.

By the way, after about 1/3 of the season, look who are the leading (top 3) scorers in the country.

Men's Division I Hockey Overall Statistics: 2016-2017 - Scoring Leaders
Rk Name GP G A Pts. Pt./GM GW PP SH
1 Mike Vecchione, Sr, F, Union 12 14 12 26 2.17 2 4 2
2 Spencer Foo, Jr, F, Union 12 6 14 20 1.67 0 4 0
3 Sebastian Vidmar, So, F, Union 12 7 11 18 1.50 2 1 0

What is amazing is vech's shooting percentage. It's an astronomical .280 !!! Keep feeding him the puck !!!! I have not done the math but I believe that line could have the highest shooting percentage in the country. Foo is also making it happen with his great passing.

It would be nice to see Dufour (6'3") and Light (6'5") in there against what is sure to be a tough Clarkson Squad.

Yes, that was the save I was talking about - thanks for posting that .. a very good stop on the first shot and slid across & got the rebound shot square on the blocker & put it into the corner.. incredible!!

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

That top line just doesn't stop coming! They had to be close to 25:00-30:00 tonight and I really thought they were going to score on more than a few occasions, unbelievable effort by our penalty kill and Kielly tonight. I personally was really impressed with #3 Kolias boy can he skate he should be a good one for quite awhile. Obviously on the Clarkson side the all freshmen line really was impressive tonight, Rempal is a special talent and playing with someone in Brosseau who he's played 3 years of junior hockey with it helps and then you add Sturm to that line and he seems to do be in the right place at the right time, good skater who is very responsible in his own end. Amorosa was finally back and played a weekend set after looking a bit rusty against Princeton, it's quite the luxury to have him back and is already making an impact on the PP and with the defensive unit as a whole. Best of luck and see you again in the North Country!

Looking forward to the return trip! It was a fun series (and we need more than 1 point!!!).

Our first period screwed us over. We did not have the required intensity. 2 very nice goals by Clarkson on their first 7 shots.

PP fail again... sigh... another 5 on 3 for more than one minute, no score :(

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

We need to fix the power play.

With all of the offensive fire power on that first unit PP they should be killing it... But they are undisciplined
It's great to cycle but you need to be patient and disciplined to get a serious shot -
they usually have #18 in the goalies face so there is a screen and somebody to tie up 1 defender.
5 on 3 and the shot gets blocked by the point man.. Somebody had to have a better shot than that...

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

In three out of the last four games, the other team has taken a two goal lead in the first period - hopefully just a learning opportunity. On to Quinnipiac (and Princeton) after a few weeks of rest.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

If someone told me Union would be 4-1-1 after their first 6 ECAC league games. I would have said take it and run.....

IMO the ECAC is among the toughest leagues top to bottom in college hockey. Better bring your A game for 60 minutes and sometimes 65 minutes to get two points in this league.

We need more scoring depth to keep winning especially come crunch time in Feb and the playoffs.

Still a very good start to league play. Go U !

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Union transfer to Utica College Roman Ammirato is the leading scorer in D3 for the 6-0 nationally ranked Pioneers. I see he played 32 games his frosh season and about 17 his soph season, what can you tell me about him, just curious ?
