UNH Wildcats 2016 Offseason Thread - Searching for Direction

Re: UNH Wildcats 2016 Offseason Thread - Searching for Direction

About 5 good chances for wins (Bentley, Brown, AZ, SH and CC), and a couple toss ups (RPI, Clarkson, Cornell) towards the glorious 600. But that would require that we win about 9 games in hockey east for Dick in his quest (Maine, maybe a win or two against Merrimack, and UConn and UMass before Carvell's and Cavanaugh's recruits allow them to overtake UNH). (Nine HE conference wins will be tough! We only won 4 last year, and with the talent dwindling, maybe 6?) With the improvements by UConn and UMass, and the lack of any real talent upgrade at UNH, the 2017-18 conference schedule may be tougher to get wins, so that OOC schedule will be interesting. What a fitting legacy if Dick comes up just short of his goal.

Here's the depth chart, line combos fixed mostly on "top 6 vs "bottom 6" rough calculations just to get a sense of talent.

Jr.Eiserman ----Sr.Kelleher--- So.Nazarian
Jr.Salvaggio ---Jr.McNicholas----So.Vela
Fr.Blackburn-----Fr.Fregona----Sr.Hill
Fr.BVR-------- So.Miller ----Fr.Grasso
So.Cefalu---Fr.Sacco

Sr.Cleland----Fr.Wyse
Jr.Marks------Sr.Maller
So.Dawson--------Jr.Chanter
Jr.Boyd-------Fr.Nonis
-----------------------------------2017-18------------------------------

Sr.Eiserman ---- Sr.McNicholas --- Jr.Nazarian
Sr.Salvaggio -------Jr.Vela --------So.Fregona
So.Blackburn----- Fr.Kelleher ----So.Grasso
So.BVR-------- Jr.Miller ----Fr.MacAdams
Fr.Cipollone------Jr.Cefalu---So.Sacco

Sr.Marks------Fr.Miller
Jr.Dawson-------- So.Wyse
Fr.Darcy----Sr.Boyd
Sr.Chanter -------Fr._____

Thanks for this work...love to see TyK centering the top line..

Watcher, I like these lines but wonder if we will see LB playing on the second by Thanksgiving. An issue with last years 2nd line which finally became the first line, was size. Grit and no fear, but just came up short in the corners on to many occasions.
AP, TK and DC had the skill set, but by the second half there were no secrets and the competition and size was just to much. They need a big wing to win more battles in the corners. In an earlier post I had said only 5 juniors, but i forgot one of our D. I know the goalies are juniors but my reference was not having returning goal scores in the top 6 which has been most every year in the past. I also think you may see JH playing up on the second line. He has the hustle and remember he will be a senior and they get special looks.

So Pike is retiring....interesting. I hope whomever takes the UNH beat is willing to report on all the news from there, and not just what the SID passes out! But I'm sure he needs the job so he won't jeopardize it.......Al Lessel is writing for the UNH Athletic website now, and he is a good journalist with a nice writing style but obviously is restrained by the same parameters......

Yeah that's what I was told by someone pretty close to me who has connections to the paper...I remember a couple of seasons ago the Seacoast group had a story where they (sports writers) actually all chimed in to talk about what's holding the 'Cats back or something to that effect, things like rink size...coach longevity..parity in HE now, etc. I watch the papers like a hawk for 'Cat news and I could be wrong but haven't seen anything introducing our new class or anything like that in awhile. Like I said...that kind of stuff is good for the fans so where is it? If I'm missing the boat here and of course, 'we have bigger fish to fry' perhaps but it's part of it. Strange that we haven't seen UNH season tix renewals come out either. ho hum. I'm sure we'll be hearing more...when the season starts.

EDIT: just checked my email and see that last years renewals came out 7/6/15 so I guess we aren't that far off the mark FWIW dept...

I realize that there are many that feel the athletic department is a bunch of bumbling idiots... and we're all entitled to our opinions... But this was great news, as voted by a national cohort of her peers, who seem to feel otherwise....

And while we're on the subject of being voted on by a cohort of her peers, it appears that Cyd Scarano is a heckuva girls soccer coach. In fact, NH coach of the year.

HR, I'm in for 2 season tix this year. Have you received the renewal stuff? Are you able to select your section?

9 of the first 13 on home ice. Better get the job done there. I always hate that upstate New York weekend...

But are we really playing MC twice at the Whitt? Is that a mistake? If so, only 8 of the first 13.

I'll definitely be hitting the Garden in NYC for Cornell. HR, you going to make that trip? Hopefully it's not our only trip to a "Garden" this year.

Snively, I'll take 8 wins in the first 12, assuming we beat your Bentley boys. One loss in upstate NY, a loss to BC, a loss to Merrimack, and a loss at UMass. 8-4 after 12. And yes, I realize the optimism of my ways. However, Not too many years ago, we would have assumed 11-1 at worst.

Yes we are planning the trip to NYC hotel one block from the Garden. Was thinking of doing the New York swing to no where' land but have decided it's a bit of a haul even by my standards!! Got lucky the other day and won my seasons tix money in a scratch tix so anxious to get that purchase made as well. No Frozen Fenway is NESN televising it?

Two games at home or away with nearby team(s) happen every year now to balance out two games at home or away with far away teams, such as UVM and NICC, to keep the overall number of home and away conference games in balance.

Yes, I think that you are an optimist on the over/under for our first 12 games. But, the good part for me in taking the under is that I "win" either way, similar to the outcome of the UNH-Bentley game.

I may make a day trip to the MSG game from cousin's place outside New Haven; have been to NYC lots, but bever MSG. Can anyone provide us our all-time Div 1 won-loss records against Cornell, St Lawrence, and Clarkson?

I agree with HR that Canton/Potsdam is a long haul for a weekend, but at least it is closer than NICC, and October offers a better chance of decent driving conditions than during mid-winter.

You got a point there about driving conditions haven't ruled it out entirely...went to Union once which was just alittle over 4 hrs so what's a couple more and see two games? Sounds better already... 😉

23-21-2 v Clarkson
13-13-0 v Cornell
24-22-0 v RPI
31-16-1 v St. Lawrence

Feels about right.... Even in our best years, those teams seem to trip us up.

You're right - forgotten about the balancing for long road trips.

Regarding the O/U... Since you set it at 7.5, I didn't figure 8 wins was TOO big a stretch. That stated, 4 wins is also a possibility. But I think that with a slightly more experience blue-line core, we see a bit more control in our own end this year.

MSG should be a blast...

I'm really looking forward to this even tho it will create an exhausting road trip after the Thanksgiving holiday! Waiting on the UNH tix to come out for this event; remember reading they would have something together soon for purchase. We will have to connect those of us that are going! Have decided against the trip to the "north country"; would lose 2 field hockey games and those games fuel the rest of my Wildcat adventures!! ;)

Yikes, I had no idea that we had won so many games against the Saints; I guess that I must be a jinx at those games.

Bathgate, Giacomin, Gilbert, Graves, Howell, Leetch, Messier, and Richter; let's meet under Rod Gilbert's photo between periods at MSG?

HR, had you been to Walter Brown Arena before CACC game? MSG? If no, you can add two more arenas to your list on the Arenas thread.

Looking for an excuse to bump this back to the front page, so I thought I would let all you old timers know that Decade is running a "The Rookies" marathon this coming weekend
