UNH Wildcats 2015 Offseason - Future Planning ...or Just Rearranging the Deck Chairs?

Not only is this going to be a weak defense, but in looking at help for 2016, 2017 as recruits, I see no real prospects to spend the Masonius/ryczyk money on. The program, whoever will coach it, will will have little in the pipeline, and will face some real challenges while we sort out the future.

Kind of feels like the B's right now...a top tier D player needed...and stat! This is not to slight our current guys and I'm sure the coaching staff is well aware of this need....Imagine they are scrambling as we speak to sort it all out.

Here's hoping that guys like Boyd and Chanter get tons of playing time to develop as I see some bright spots there. I liked the games of Marks and Furgele last year and Cleland came a long way last season. Guys like Quast (who I thought came a very long way last season) will have to bring it even bigger than before. Right now I see our D as:

Cleland/Quast
Furgele/Marks
Boyd/Maller
Chanter/?

But I'll be honest this is a concern (want to clarify for me the immediate concern is the current numbers not necessarily the talent)...and thought so regardless of the loss of Masonius / Rycz (sorry name escapes me) situation when Pesce left.
Still...what do I know?!? Excited that our GK situation is rocking this year man I thought the world came to an end when...Onward 'Cats!!

Quast anywhere near the top pairing is downright frightening - WAY beyond a mere "concern".

Well Chuck the kid has experience...and you know he's gonna play up there...certainly at the beginning of the season. I might be inclined to switch Marks or Maller (if healthy) up there as well...Quast had one hell of a game v BU and his PC games weren't bad either. Who would you put in that top pairing, if I may ask?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015 Offseason - Future Planning ...or Just Rearranging the Deck Cha

Probably the same place he got the WRONG info 2x that Mike Mottau was coming to UCONN to be an Assistant (once with Souza, the second time to replace Souza). Some rudimentary fact checking would have showed these claims to be false too.

Geez ... wonder who was a BC assistant coach all four (4) years Mottau played there ...

When he retired, Mottau mentioned a potential interest in coaching, scouting and/or media work. Our hero meets with him or follows up to inquire as to his interest in UConn (IIRC Mottau did play prep hockey in CT at Avon Old Farms) ... then *shares* it as a rumor with a friendly media type to try to get some play off the *news*. Mottau decides instead to go do scouting work for the Blackhawks, but may have left the door open with UConn, so *Luce* follows up again with MM this Spring.

Is this really all that far-fetched a scenario? It's definitely right out of the Cav playbook, that's for sure ...

ABQ.

Cleland/Maller
Furgele/Marks
Boyd/Chanter

:D

Seriously, though, I'd be shocked to see Quast on the first pairing, and surprised to see him on the second. Agreed he will likely start the season with regular ice time, but as the younger players develop (and barring injuries), Quast's time will (hopefully) be marginalized as the season plays out. This is not the second coming of Eric Knodel (and having said that, even Knodel is now just an ECHL level player).

I have nothing against Quast ... but he is a D-1 depth player, and if he's playing a significant role, then either your team is decimated with injuries OR your blue line talent isn't up to snuff. JMHO.

I do like your pairings and I do agree with your Eric K comment (those were the days). UNH has no choice but let these young guys develop this season...let's pray for no injuries!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015 Offseason - Future Planning ...or Just Rearranging the Deck Cha

So if this is the case, and please understand I have zero knowledge of how this all works, he can get into UConn? Did he not sign a NLI or does that not matter if he can't cut the admission muster at UNH? Just looking for some understanding how an athlete can be on track for 3 years and then poof...all gone. And I do know this happens all the time.

The NLI becomes irrelevant if he wasn't admitted. UConn has its own admission requirements, which he may or may not meet. However, without trying to be snarky, I don't believe they hold their athletes to the same standards as the general student body like UNH now does. If they want him, he will be admitted.

But we wanted him!! 😉
Thanks for the info Aerman; I've been reading up on NLI's etc and that makes sense. There's a lot of hoops these athletes and their families must jump through I am sure. And I doubt that UNH is the only school that misses out on athletes...Since none of us really know what happened suffice it to say it's unfortunate but we move on. I get what you are saying about the difference between admission standards ;)

Key question(s): can we get HIM past Admissions? This year or next??

... since when did getting into UNH become akin to membership at The Country Club?

Interesting looking prospect! As per getting into UNH as a NH High School teacher I know it's not a given and have had many students who didn't get in. It begs the question for me anyway; are there different 'rules' for athletes? I would think prospective athletes who express interest and / or are recruited by UNH coaches are 'vetted'; given the basics on what they need to get in which is where compliance comes in. They either make it, or they don't. But am honestly clue less about what our process is (my two kids went through but that was awhile ago!) I'm really looking forward to seeing what our two asst. coaches will do in the coming months recruiting...Dfense Dfense Dfense :D I know we only have one D graduating, btw..

Fill in the blank: in the coming months our recruitment efforts need to: ________________________________________________

I am not concerned about our D-men, assuming that all seven can stay healthy. I think that our recruiting efforts need to focus on kids who can put the puck in the net, which I predict will be a huge challenge this coming season.

This is my biggest concern...I don't know why I'm so hung up on the numbers...but we have seen injuries take a toll on our D before so...is 7 to 8 Dmen about average for a team? I know we carry a bunch of forwards...so agree, you can't win games unless you put the puck in the net!!!!

EDIT: I answered my own q...7 or 8 is about the right number most teams carry for D...so, I can relax..

And Our very own Trevor VanRiemsdyk gets the cup...and a ring in his rookie season. Soooo proud of him and happy for all who have coached him over the years! Just goes to show that dreams really do come true! It's a Great day to be a Wildcat fan!!☺️☺️☺️

So, I just learned that TvR d-man predecessor Blake Kessel, who also left UNH after three years, finished this past season in Finland, after four years of toil in the AHL and ECHL. Their older bros continue to have success in the NHL, although Phil Kessel just got traded from the Leafs to the Pens.

And isn't there a Kessel sister who plays hockey? Wow... Kessel Crosby Mahlkin....be afraid be very afraid!!! Heading to a charity hockey game down in Ct the 15th where the vR's are on the roster psyched!!!

Only time to be "afraid" is if you *play* against them in fantasy hockey. Soft-Whiner-Overrated more like it.

Happy Fourth of July weekend, everyone. Hoping for a Mike Souza appearance sometime soon. :)
