UNH Wildcats 2015 Offseason - Future Planning ...or Just Rearranging the Deck Chairs?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015 Offseason - Future Planning ...or Just Rearranging the Deck Cha

So will Coach-who's-not-quite-on-the-website-with-the-other-coaches (yes I am annoying) Souza work with the offense or defense? Last year didn't Stewart start with the D but he and Borek switched roles mid-stream? Does it matter? Says in his bio that he worked primarily with forwards...

Hartford Courant article.
http://www.courant.com/sports/hockey/hc-souza-0701-20150701-story.html

Cavanaugh supported Souza's move to New Hampshire, where Souza will take over as head coach when Dick Umile, entering his 26th season, retires.

It's a wonderful opportunity and I'm really happy for him. It will be a seemless transition when Dick decides to retire. I told Dick I would support it if they were going to move him to head coach. Dick said, 'That's our plan.'

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015 Offseason - Future Planning ...or Just Rearranging the Deck Cha

Now I know why it's taken so long for the Souza announcement ... so Luce Canaan could take a few weeks to patch together his explanation for the departure of Souza with his "blessing", and how he aspires to become the fountain of all future head coaching. Plus that bit about Coach Umile treating Souza "like a son". All in one neat, tidy package. Truly gag-worthy.

Oh yeah, and not the least bit self-serving to the extent that he's put the "coach in waiting" piece out there, which I can't help but think Coach Umile (not to mention Coach Stewart and possibly even Souza himself) would have preferred to keep mum. If it was even said at all. "That's the plan" certainly leaves the door open for changes in "the plan".

Sorry folks, just not a big fan of the former BC assistant down there in Storrs. As usual, it's all about him.

Chuck, typically the head-coach-in-waiting thing is usually intended for one reason - for everyone to know about it. This helps recruiting.

Yeah OK I understand that ... but that's Coach Umile's call to make, and no one else's - don't you think?

The best line I've ever heard about "Cav" came many years ago from a former HE assistant (who shall remain nameless), who described him as the "coach most likely to have been stuffed in a locker by HS teammates".

insert weasel photo here :)

Oh man...it just occurred to me while doing house stuff that if I were my mother she'd be watching her "programs" aka soaps.. Me, I'm listening to the NHL Free Agent draft stuff. What's happened to me?

Remember that 'avalanche' of news? Well...the last of it in today...don't have the link but Joseph Masonius will attend UConn in the Fall....I'm sure others have the full details etc. Sigh. (This is per Hockey Essentials)

this hockey fan stuff is hard...

I know this happens but man we could've really used him. Maybe that's an understatement. Well as they are fond of saying on the team "next man up".

That's two decommits since the jumbotron was announced

The men's hockey schedule has been posted online:
http://unhwildcats.com/sports/mice/2015-16/schedule

Takeaways are, first, the weak OOC schedule. Pretty imperative that UNH win a heck of a lot more than the lose in these 12 games and especially those against teams that have a chance of success (Union, St. Lawrence, Michigan St.). Not going to get much in the way of Pairwise Points playing AIC and Bentley. Second thing that gets me is why we are playing two road games vs. Merrimack and Providence. This all started three years ago and we have gone back and forth with two game sets since. I can maybe understand PC since a trip to Providence, especially on a Friday, can be a bear. But Merrimack? They are our closest HE rival in terms of miles so, for the life of me, I cannot think of any logical explanation for this type of scheduling. Finally, the reason we have so many OOC games is because we only play 24 league games. I have thrown this out before but, assuming the league remains with 12 teams, I'd like to see them have two divisions, play three games each inside your division (15 games) and two games in the other division (12) for a total of 27. Then we'd only have 7 OOC games to contend with, not 12. Any thoughts on that?

On Souza, except for Cavanaugh's pronouncement, there is nothing to indicate that Souza is coming to UNH with a deal that he will be the head coach. All this news has come out of Connecticut with the implied rationalization that it is the only reason he would leave.

I'm sure someone would lie about it publicly.

My understanding about having two away games scheduled against close by HEA teams is to balance two home games against far away teams, such as NICC. Also, I think that only 22 of our games count as HEA games, with the others against Maine and UVM counting as OOC games. So, NBD, but I agree that we cannot lose many OOC games this season, or we will be SOL at NCAA time because of our weak SOS.
