UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Three) - Living in Interesting Times

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Three) - Living in Interesting Times

UNH failed to put an extra person in the box for the 10 minute misconduct. So when 5 minutes were up, they wouldn't let Miller out of box. UNH sends guy over dasher, and gets flagged for 2 minute penalty illegal substitution.

Umiliating.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Three) - Living in Interesting Times

Dominated by Merrimack, folks. Let that sink in for a moment ... Merrimack.

The March to 600 is now resembling the (Pass the) Bataan Death March.

Before we go further ... I want to apologize here to our Hobey nominee, who credible sources have informed me has been playing with a very painful injury for at least the last couple of weeks (wouldn't be surprised if longer). I had some negative things to say about his effort the other night, not knowing the background. Mea culpa. :o

... and now begins what could be one of the most interesting offseasons in recent UNH Hockey history.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Three) - Living in Interesting Times

Haven't been following, is there a legitimate possibility Umile is pushed into retirement or is fired?

If you ask me, I think that is a legitimate possibility. Not a probability, though.

He won't be fired, so he'd have to be pushed into retirement with a MBPB job, as I don't see a resignation either.

19 games since 2016, 3-14-2
They regressed badly down the stretch.

Drive home safely

Thanks, YS. Beat PC!

Fortunately, I was already home two hours away listening on radio.

Umile and Souza both must go, after that boneheaded coaching fiasco tonight, even if it did not impact the final score. The two UNH radio guys also need to go, as they still did not understand the two-minute minor for illegal man on the ice even during the post-game recap.

I still think that taking five-minute majors is stupid, and Cats were lucky to escape that without further damage, especially two minutes of 5-3 in middle of the major.

Tirone made 132 saves on the weekend, for 0.957 SV%, along with 2.00 GAA, so not his fault.

He apparently did, until last summer, when the term was reduced to three (now two) years.

Quid pro quo was apparently being allowed to choose his successor (Souza).

He needs to follow his beloved senior class out of town. He is the biggest reason this season was not just a bad one but a disaster.

- He was asleep at the switch while major recruiting mistakes led to this roster
- He cost the team wins and momentum early by sticking with Tirone too long
- He played the weakest forwards more than anyone and in all key situations all season long, refusing to do right by the team
- His blind senior loyalty cost UNH Warren Foegel and stunted the development of many younger players
- He put together a staff without a defensive coach (if you remember Stewart got switched from D to F last year because the first half defense was so bad. Souza comes on board and Stewart goes right back to coaching the D?)
- The team made the same mistakes all season long with no adjustment or improvement at all

That's just the beginning - I could go on and on and I'm sure others have plenty more they could add.

There is A LOT of potential in next years team with three goalies to chose from and dramatically improved forward play just through the personnel change. It all depends on Potualski's return and an improved defense. Does Umile and this staff have the ability to recognize this potential?! That is a huge question mark. He's in over his head at this point and it is simply time to go...

If he doesn't there is a real chance they blow next season, the following season is a waste of time (I mean transition year) and ONLY THEN do we get to find out who Souza really is. Which means even if he's awful another 4-5 years before any thoughts of making a change. (That is if Marty would even make a change - has he ever fired anyone for on-field results no matter how bad?? )...

Jock MacKenzie would have understood what was going on!!!!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Three) - Living in Interesting Times

The seniors have been a great group as far as leadership. We need the secondary group, the younger players. They’ve got to start to figure it out.

If only the younger players had stepped up and matched the play of the seniors...

That's a real Dick Umile quote, btw...

Jock MacKenzie would have understood what was going on!!!!

I grew up listening to him on WTSN - Dover; his sign off each evening: "Next to religion, sports is the most important American way of life." :-)

And, speaking of Jock, why have we not heard a peep out of Jacques "Rabbit" Poriveau this season?

Simply pathetiic and inexcusable coaching.

Nice effort by Dawson!

Ugh so that's what happened out there?!?! Jeeze we had no idea. Double ugh. Agree beauty by Dawson. Arrived home safely....

Ps from reading the Mack report on the game DU says they wouldn't let Miller out of the box so they had to send in another player which led to the next penalty?? Anyway what's done is done.

Eiserman - Poturalski - Kelleher
Vela - McNicholas - Nazarian
Kelleher - Blackburn - Fregona
Salvaggio/BVR - Miller/Grasso - Hill
Cefalu - Sacco

Cleland - Marks
Wyse - Dawson
Maller - Boyd/Chanter
Furgele - Nonis

Goaltending should be an un-biased, open competition...

Eiserman was ejected twice late in the season - I don't recall UNH putting a second player in the box at that point. Instead, the misconduct was simply charged to Eiserman and a player served the major penalty. So unless they did put a second player in the box in those situations (and I've missed it my entire lifetime), this seems wrong and inconsistent. I have to think the penalty box attendant made a mistake and assumed incorrectly that Miller was serving a misconduct and refused to let him out.

Clearly, UNH should have dealt with it, looked for a whistle and then complained - instead of simply subbing from the bench...

If I am wrong about the misconduct (I don't EVER recall seeing the penalty applied this way) and the refs knew the rule (they clearly called it right away), then why did they not explain the rule and the unique situation to UNH when the penalties were assessed and Cleland was ejected? That seems it would be the responsibility of the officials in that situation. To make sure the right number of guys were in the box...

This is certainly poor awareness by the UNH coaching staff - but if the refs knew the rule (which they clearly did, since they called it right away), then why did they not explain the rule and the unique situation to UNH when the penalties were assessed and Cleland was ejected? Seems like the right thing to do as an official...

Unfortunately for UNH, Voss was one of the refs tonight and he's notoriously one of the worst in HE. Ranks right up there with Benedetto.

yeah... something doesn't sound right... what would happen if a player picked up a 10 on top of the 5+10?
