Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

BTW, do we know that if there are any non-UNH alums as candidates?

Personally I think it would be good to look outside the "box".

However looking at track record I hope all are alums. Umile likes people he knows and has worked with in the past. So any non UNH alum candidate would very like be in his late 50's. I would like some youth and hence I think the pool of acceptable candidates would be former Umile players.

That's probably what cost Chuck the job, as I believe he predates Umile at UNH and is somewhere in his 50's...

Charlie Holt started this; hire alums that played for me, so it's his fault! Chuck will have a fighting chance with a Bentley vacancy😆

Only other school that does this is BU....York's assistants never played for him at BC.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

2 cents worth: Not sure how one evaluates these things, but if a team wound up with two "equal" prospective head coaches .... one an alum and one not .... then it comes down to whether the program is considering that old adage, "going in a different direction." That then raises the often debated topic on this thread, "Does UNH need/want to go in a different direction?" In the final analysis someone must know all about these things .... I do not assume to be that person.

On the other hand .... if the current head coach at Providence wants to come to Durham .... then the debate is over. :-)

Charlie never had alums as assistants. Back in the glory days, he had one assistant, Bob Norton, who was also an assistant on the football team. Near the end of Bob's time, Charlie brought in Bob Kullen who played for Charlie's great friend, Sid Watson, at Bowdoin. Sometime near the end of Charlie's time he might have had Dave O'Connor on the staff but that's it. Charlie had a pretty good coaching tree - McShane, Beaney, Crowder, Bob Francis - but none of these guys, nor any of their peers, coached at UNH. On the other hand, Bob Kullen brought in two former players as assistants - Umile and Sean Coady.

Okay, you are right but I thought Charlie had a hand in bringing in Umile by proxy. I could be wrong.

Very familiar with the other guys you mentioned. In fact one of my sons did a Beaney camp in Vermont.

Thanks for the clarification my good man☺

Hmm! Thats interesting and surprises me that York doesn't bring in BC guys.

Joe Marsh and Frank Anzalone also Charlie's players, right? Indeed, pretty amazing coaching tree.

Trivia Question: how many total Spencer Penrose Awards by Charlie's players?

Look at the quote you responded to and see if you can figure out why your post is incorrect. ;)

BC Associate Head coach Greg Brown is a BC guy.
Marty McInnis is a BC guy.
Ayers is not, but a York coached BC guy was interviewed for the position.

We might also mention one of my all time favorites ..... Tim Burke .... who graduated in 1977 and was an All-American. He coached a number of teams during his career.. along the way to becoming the current Director of Scouting for San Jose. Played both baseball and hockey for four years at UNH (as did Andy Brickley).

This is getting tedious;)

Good luck to the UNH Football team in Ohio this weekend. Nice to have one of the current male teams in the national picture .......
