UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Not sure I've ever seen the word "grinder" associated with Kessel (at least in a positive way). I think that's a large part of the reason why he's not in Boston anymore. Ditto Seguin. Just not the kind of players that organization values.

Also seriously doubt UNH is anywhere near close to the top of the list of D-1 schools producing current (or past) NHL players, but it's nice to see a few out and about there nowadays. Can't hurt the recruiting efforts. :)

Exactly, the Bruins do not like finesse forwards who avoid the "hard areas" around the net, in the corners, etcetera. They even shipped Jumbo Joe Thornton out of town because he spent too much time behind the net rather than in front of the net. So, few Cats have played or will ever play for long on the Bruins, with the NESN color guy being an exception.

Ok, I think that they may have meant in that particular game between those two teams?

here's the tweet:

College Hockey, Inc. @collegehockey · Nov 12

Based on morning skates, 14 schools have former players in action on tonight's @NBCSN @NHL doubleheader (led by UNH-3, Miami/Wisc-2)

So I'm guessing it was exclusive to the B's V Leafs then the second game featuring the Kings and I'm not remembering who they played...?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

The NU fans can be a sensitive bunch; an inferiority complex is very much part of the Husky DNA. And that's coming from someone who spent the best four summers of his youth working the grounds along Huntington Ave., including Boston (now Mathews) Arena - which BTW is still by far my favorite HE destination. Hope they never replace that barn. Total classic.
Years ago for an entire game I had edgy fun running commentary with some above the legal limit NU students in the section next to us. Post game in the street after a suspenseful UNH victory, a NU fan, unrelated to the earlier NU crew, walking in the opposite direction, sees my UNH cap and drops a from the heart "F@#$ You, UNH!!!" on me. My daughter, much younger at the time, told me it was the most intense competitive crowd vibe she's ever (maybe still?) experienced.

Matthews is so cool in many ways. Probably the only arena left close to the old Boston Garden, Forum, MSG, etc. arenas in architecture and vibe. From the days when you had to be a FAN to endure the unpleasantness of the venues. Hopefully with all the renovations it will be around for a long time.

Yep, that makes more sense. Kings-Ducks was a great nightcap, with the Ducks' Ryan Kesler beating UMass alum Jonathan Quick 6-5 in OT shoot out.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Toronto GM Dave Nonis must really like what he see's from UNH. He traded for Van riemsdyk, then his son Nick Nonis committed to UNH. He brought in Trevor Smith, Dan Winnik, and also signed Blake Kessel and Eric Knodel to AHL contracts. Looks like UNH north! I wonder when Nonis trades for TVR to complete the NHL set ;)

Talk about blind faith ... from a franchise that's almost 50 years removed from its last Stanley Cup, and would view advancing past the first round of the playoffs as a minor miracle, I'm not sure becoming a job bank for former UNH players is going to be a successful recipe for breaking the Leafs out of their long-standing funk.

Felger, I agree with you 100% on the recent NU coaching selections. Especially the current guy (cue the Husky fans going into uber-defensive hysterics, "whaddaya mean, he's just doin' his job", etc.).

Predictions for this weekend: UNH takes 3 points, with a win at home and a hard-fought tie at the Barn God Built. Go UNH!!! :)

College Hockey: Wildcats' freshmen playing like vets:
http://www.unionleader.com/article/20141114/SPORTS22/141119468

DURHAM — If Dick Umile’s University of New Hampshire hockey team has surprised him in any way so far this season, perhaps that surprise has been the production of the 10-player freshman class.

UNH’s No. 1 goaltender is a freshman, the Wildcats have regularly been playing three freshmen on defense and the freshmen have produced more points (5-14-19) than any other class...

No surprise to anyone reading UNH threads, especially C-H-C's; nearly all projections that I have read here have been that this year's recruiting class was the best in the past four years. I think that my only surprise was the assailant opening up an opportunity for Clark in net.

And perhaps so much Freshman playing time which Coach should be credited for.

Snive, this is not directed to you personally, but to all on this board: If you were one of Casey's parents or your child was in Casey's position, how would you feel about the "assailant" label? I doubt they read this forum, but this is a very tough time for the Desmith family. UNH supporters might consider a display of class.

You'd be surprised. Many NU fans are just about done with JM- just take a stroll over to the NU thread to see what I mean.

I'm looking forward to this weekend, should be an interesting pair of games between teams who have their own issues. Something's gotta give! The ever-optimist in me says we'll see a split based on home ice. Oh, also, the time out ritual was temporarily stopped this season- I'm hopeful to get it back this weekend, but more likely it comes back next weekend vs Merrimack. Still, we have plenty of shenanigans for the out-of-towners to experience :D Good luck to y'all, enjoy your time at the barn!

Pending track star recruitment for the Dog House?

I'll cop to the "assailant" tag. And honestly, he was/is an adult who by all accounts exhibited cretinous (and likely criminal) behavior. I'm sure it's a very tough time for the family. He has let a lot of folks down - including his family, his friends and his teammates. As a fan of the program, I'm not even on the radar of those he's let down - much less harmed - but I'm offended by his behavior. AND most of all, he's caused physical and emotional pain and trauma on the (female) victim of his attack. It doesn't get much lower than that.

The fact he has not even been mentioned by either Coach Umile OR BS35+1  I consider that to be a point of virtue for both men ... and you folks all know where I've stood with the latter in recent times.

If it seems a little impersonal/harsh to refer to him as "the assailant", yeah you're probably correct. But let's consider how he treated his victim, and then we can have that discussion about "class". JMO.

I agree with Darius, my apologies, and I will be more careful with my language.

I applaud Darius for bringing this up for "discussion" .... and I compliment Snively65 for his gracious and mature response.

My greatest fear is that the end result of the legal process involved with the Desmith episode will be a vivid reminder of the importance of the word alleged. Please understand that I have absolutely no "insider" information on this situation. However, no matter how all this comes down -- there is no sadder and helpless place to be then to be -- "falsely accused." It is probably best to let the legal process play itself out.
