Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Goumas was on pace to be a Hobey candidate the first half last year. Better to finish strong second half this year. So, why all the penalties late in second and early third to the Skating Mother Teresa's? Beat the Big Green and take some revenge for humiliation in Hanover last year.

Ya those penalties were weird though. I'm sitting there watching the 5 on three expire and then they put up two more penalties and we couldn't figure out what was going on except we knew Goumas and Downing were in the box.

BTW, I see you post on the Bentley thread talking about meeting at the John Brewer. My mother-in-law lives down the street from the John Brewer in Waltham and we often take her to lunch there because she likes it so much. Also my father-in-law is a Bentley Alum:D Just thought I'd throw that all in;)

Next time Bentley is playing at home and UNH is playing far away, you should catch a game at the JAR. I am really joking about the need for a Jumbotron at Lake Whitt, given what we have at the JAR. Wish that Bentley had been scheduled against UNH this year, as I think it would have been a good game.

I would like to catch a game at the Jar and see their Jumbotron:)

I would like to catch a game at the Jar and see their Jumbotron:)

Not sure if I remember correctly - it was a long time ago, y'know - but I have a distant memory of the JAR scoreboard which involved a large blackboard, jumbo chalk and a team manager with old-school erasers, and a megaphone to announce the scoring and penalties.

Suffice to say, but we didn't pay too close attention to tracking those meaningless SOG's, even back then. :p

----------------

Back to the present ... very encouraging gut-check win last night against a decent non-conference opponent for UNH. This was the kind of win I'd been waiting to see them pull out, on a night when they had to overcome some adversity with the accumulation of penalties at the start of the 3rd, then falling behind, but keeping their focus and getting the job done. Kudos to Willows, who had some positive things to say in the Portsmouth Herald recap this morning. More of that please. Looks like Coach Umile is back to going with the one goalie, after a brief early-season flirtation with a rotation with Wyer didn't work out. I think he's made the right call on that one.

Gotta take care of business next weekend against a down-but-highly-motivated Dartmouth team, or else that takes something away from this weekend's sweep against UNO. Taking a modest four-game winning streak into the following weekend's pair of home games with Union would be a good platform to build upon; I'd like to see the 'Cats find a way to take at least three points out of that weekend to keep building some momentum as the resumption of Hockey East play (and the renewed quest for home ice) follows after that.

Promising start to 2014 with a 3-1-0 record. If UNH can maintain this kind of form from here on out, pretty much anything is possible. :)

Ya, especially since back in the day nobody played any defense anyway. So there were too many SOG's to keep track of even if you wanted to:eek:;)

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Sadly, the JAR does not have a Jumbotron, either. The ceiling is so low that several times during a game a puck hitting the ceiling is blown dead for a face off. The scoreboard has improved since Chuck's time, but still does not track the all important SOG. BTW, UNH won both games AND SOG this weekend, challenging Chuck's SOG hypotheses.

And, UNH now 14th in RPI, despite lower winning percentage than 10 other teams, including three others in Hockey East. The #1 SOS ranking continues to pay big dividends.

Dartmouth was ranked 10th when they beat #2 UNH 4-1. The Big Green played a great game. Unfortunately for them, it's been all downhill for Dartmouth ever since.

I think Bourque has earned his ice time .... and wouldn't a line with him and Kelleher be fun to watch?

100% correct, Dartmouth was ranked and playing really well, right up until they beat UNH - and pretty decisively IIRC. Let's hope UNH's re-appearance on their schedule doesn't result in the Big Green's sudden renaissance (obligatory Ivy vocab reference ;) ) and a similar outcome. Let them wait another weekend to rediscover their 2012 form. :)

They're actually 2-0 in 2014. Minor detail, I know. Regardless a strong weekend all in all. Nice to see them put some goals on the board and I agree with you, if they continue to play like this weekend they can really make a run the second half of the season.

FWIW dept. UNH eeks it into the 20th spot in this weeks USCHO poll...Matt Willows named Hockey East's "Warrior of the Week" with his 4 goal, 1 A antics of the past weekend :D ! Keep it up 'Cats! Looking forward to the Verizon game this Sat...anyone else going? :)

I may go:) Not sure yet.

The Cats will move up in the polls if they keep winning obviously;) They are 14th in the pairwise which is an arbitrage in stock market parlance:)

Whats the bar that unh fans go to in manchester b4 games?

We like Murphy's Tap room right across the street or JDs which is in the Radisson hotel also right across from the Verizon. Of course if you don't mind a short walk there's Margaritas down Elm which was a hot spot at the Regionals last year but what do I know ;). I'm doubting the Verizon will sell beer at the game as they didn't last year .. Sooo looking forward to this one as we're making a weekend of it in ManchVegas!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Verizon won't sell beer. NH law no beer at high school or college events.

That law makes no sense to me. It's off campus at the Verizon so I don't see why they wouldn't sell beer (Personally I think the should sell it at the Whitt too). I don't know the exact wording of the law but just because it's a college event and underage kids (college kids who show up drunk anyway) will be there, they can't sell alcohol? (Will that many students even show up?) Meanwhile the Monarchs will have a game there and the place is filled with really little kids and they are able to sell beer. Doesn't make sense. I don't know why people are so quick to censor 18,19,20 year olds from alcohol. Are people just living with their head in the sand?

Just one man's opinion....
