UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

While I'm sure that UNH is improving, I wouldn't get too jacked up about yesterday's tie. Harvard played the night before and had a quick turnaround having to travel to Durham. The night before, we lost one of our best players Lyndsey Fry to an injury which forced a shake up in lines and took away a great scoring threat. And this was our third game in five nights. Add it up and I'm sure the Crimson were not firing on all cylinders. The shot totals indicate as much.

Well, with plenty of TV timeouts, I didn't see anyone's tongue dragging. Or to quote family friend Gina MacDonald prior to the game when asked if they had anything left in the tank, "My tank is full!"

Shot totals don't tell much of a story. 22-19 in Harvard's favor. I don't have the complete box, but through two periods the Crimson had 26 attempts, with six blocked by the defense and 10 off target, 10 on net, and one goal. The Wildcats had 23 attempts, with five blocks, five off target, and 13 on net with two goals. Fact is, unlike the game against Northeastern a week earlier, the Wildcats made the Crimson pay for every inch of ice.

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Even though Harvard had a real tight battle the previous night at home (not!) combined with the 16 plus hours of rest, being elite athletes, and not forgetting the long tough 1 hour bus ride to Durham and all other excuses aside....UNH played well. Maybe the powers that be at Harvard should have looked ahead and rescheduled their Friday night home game, that totally exhausted them, to save themselves to face the Cats! :)

Skate 79 is one of those unique individuals who can apply any or all the excuses in the book when his team doesn't come out with the win, yet if his team beats another team soundly, he will post comments suggesting that the game wasn't worth the time or effort, as the opposition was so far inferior.

I'm glad that UNH fans don't recite the litany of reasons we might have performed better on a given night. We've managed to keep plugging through a tough semester despite having an injured forward who is averaging over a point per game and two seasoned defensemen in the stands too, and come out stronger for it.

As for scheduling, as far as I know, and I've witnessed the process, conference games don't have a lot of flexibility in terms of changing time / day, but non-conference games are scheduled to fill gaps in the conference schedule, and the coaching staff has the final say. If Coach Stone didn't want to subject her team to such a rigorous weekend, she didn't have to, but perhaps there is a method to the madness. The ECAC playoff format is a 2 out of 3 series, with games played in quick succession, and at both team's locations. Could be that it was all part of the plan.

At any rate, I'm happy that Harvard's student athletes display sportsmanship and humility win or lose. It is, after all, a game.

THIS!

Anyone on this board long enough realizes Skate is truly the epitome of holier-than-thou whiners. Many other programs have had far more impactful injury situations or other challenges to achieving success at various times. Of course, you don't need a Harvard education to know that if short turnaround was truly a potential impediment to success, being smart enough to ever actually play more than 2 1/2 lines in any game would be a really easy way to fix it.

Congratulations to UNH on the tie.

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

THIS!

Congratulations to UNH on the tie.

Thanks Trillium! To quote Maine Head Coach Lewis when I offered congratulation on her team's tie against a strong Northeastern team in her first season, "Are you congratulating me for a tie?!"

I'll admit, I went home happy and proud of our Wildcats, but I know that despite a huge accomplishment, we had a one goal lead heading into the third, and thus the potential to win. I truly believe that this team has the potential to win the rest of the games on the schedule this year - it's a matter correcting mistakes, and as Zoofer stated earlier, I sure am enjoying the ride.

Thanks and congratulations to the 'Cats as they head into exams. The strong leadership and desire has created a cohesive team that is deep with talent. As I look back at the first semester, I consider whether this team has met or exceeded expectations. We have high expectations of the program every year, but clearly after the last few years, a young, unproven squad, is not expected to make huge waves. One might say they have exceeded expectations, but with every game each individual has made personal improvements and become more accountable, and the team has started to play as a unit - that is to say united.

I would say that they have raised their own bar every sixty minutes of hockey, challenging themselves to get better, play a more flawless game. They have suffered a couple of big losses to ranked teams, but come back the next day and played demonstrably better. Can this team play in the post season? I believe they can. Can they beat a team like Minnesota? Recent history would suggest not, but I bet if you asked anyone in Wildcat Country, we'd be up for the challenge, and come out of it a better team, win or lose.

Happy Holidays 'Cats. Good luck with exams, and enjoy a safe and recuperative break. See you in '13!

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Greetings from Alaska. I was delighted to catch the game on TV and I thought both teams played well. Seeing and hearing the litter box crew brought back great memories of driving up to the Whit with my daughter back in the day. Best of luck to both Harvard and UNH moving forward. Happy Holidays to All!

Even though it's about the Catamounts, for the fun of seeing how much fun being on a team can be, go to youtube and search the UVM women singing "All I Want for Christmas"....nice to see Sara enjoying herself...

UNH Release:
WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Rookie defender Alexis Crossley (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) of the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team earned the title of Hockey East Rookie of the Month for December as announced by the conference Thursday afternoon.

Crossley notched four points on a goal and three assists through the four games of December, tallying one point in each contest, all of which were against teams ranked in the top-10 nationally. Against ninth-ranked Northeastern, the blueliner assisted on a goal in the first game as well as the second game and recorded five shots through the two games. In the final game of the regular-season series against No. 6 Boston College, Crossley tallied New Hampshire's only goal of the game, coming on a power play. Wrapping up 2012, she extended her point-streak to four games with an assist against No. 4 Harvard.

Currently, Crossley shares the team lead in points (13), registering six goals and seven assists. She is tied for 18th in points per game by a defensemen (0.65), 19th in the nation in power play goals (4) and is 22nd in the country in points per game by freshmen.

The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 15 when they travel to Union College for the final non-conference game of the season. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.

Thanks for all of the above. Fortunately, I can multitask and delegate! Will let Coach McCurdy know about February 16 too. They go way back as well. We have an away and home with Providence the 15th and 17th, so that turns out to be mighty convenient!

Re: Now We're Talking!

What is with the more than 5 week layoff? Hope the team isn't too rusty, although it does give Curtis some extra time to recuperate.

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

What's going on in Wildcat Country? Things seem pretty quiet in Durham right now. What's the scoop? Is everyone back, is Curtis looking good...they must be itching to get some games in!!?

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

I checked out practice on Tuesday and was pleased to see Ms. Curtis back on the ice.
I wonder if she'll be paired again with Sara Carlson once the games get back going.
During the practice I saw, Jonna was with Mork and Lascelle.
I did not see Maggie Hunt on the ice though....:(

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

I really hate the schedule now as every team has started play for the second semester but UNH...why do we have to start 10 days after they all have a couple of games under their belts...back in the day we hated getting to the party late. Hopefully the team will put the rest to good use...

Thanks for the note. I was thinking Curtis might 'Red shirt'.

Two future Wildcats in JWHL action this past weekend over in Hudson, New Hampshire. Cassandra Vilgrain (Calgary, Alberta) will be joining the Wildcats this fall, while local girl Taylor Wenczkowski (Rochester, New Hampshire) pulls on the Blue & White in 2015.

I think I heard about her some time back from a friend at work (that she was being recruited, not that she had committed).

Does she also have a sister that plays, but isn't focused primarily on hockey? My buddy mentioned that younger sis is hugely talented, but primary interests lie elsewhere atm.
