UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Ok...I now prefer turkey over gophers. After two periods the Gophers are kicking butt at 7-2 on only 21 shots against 3 UNH goaltenders. Not a great 40 minutes for the Cats' although the Gophers are certainly the better team (as expected).

Watching the UNH video feed, there certainly seem to be stretches where the Wildcats' effort isn't really there. None of the goalies have looked sharp at all. Frankly, I include Rӓty in that, too.

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Personally, even with the score I expected to be more impressed with Minnesota. That being said I was less impressed with the Cats and felt it was their worst effort of the season thus far. I am sure it was a little intimidating for them with the hype surrounding the Gophers but that should be more motivation than anything. It is what it is, the Gophers are talented!

You're probably the fourth person to say that after the first game of a series this year. I don't think the Gophers played particularly well today, but they are a team that is dominant without being as flashy as you'd think, leaving aside the Kessel/Brandt line. They really just smother teams to death. They give up fewer than 20 shots per game and there aren't many of them that are in close. Their speed shows up more on defense than it does on offense, particularly in the way the forwards backcheck.

And that is the type of team that tends to have success.

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

As I wrote in the Minnesota thread, UNH didn't really show up today but take nothing from the Gophers, they are phenomenal and fun to watch....Eeyore is on the money about the smothering style of play however when UNH scoed and/or played with confidence, Minne would back off and give them room....unfortunately UNH wasn't aggresive and as soon as they layed back, on came Minnesota, as they should...too many real weak goals to consider the what if's......"but tomorrow will be another day"

At least two UNH odd-man rushes were broken up by a back-checking Gopher who knocked the puck away without tripping the Wildcat player.

Sorry to say and as you will find out tomorrow. UNH did show up today. It's hard to play aggressive when you play a great team and Minnesota is great team. They know how to score and have many snipers. Not to mention 6 - 5'10" or bigger dmen and one of the best if not best goalies in women's college hockey. I predict a shutout tomorrow for Minny.

Teams I see with a chance to beat them are Harvard, Cornell, The Bostons and Possibly UND, WI with a great goalie nights. Don't see a team that could sweep them. Of course anything can happen in hockey.

No, for the first 25 minutes they were not in the building, and the goalies paid the price.

Actually, I thought UNH looked the worst at the start of the third period, when they appeared absolutely deflated. The Gophers controlled play in the Wildcat zone for a fair number of minutes, with Kessel trying to feed Brandt before scoring herself, and then Bona having a scoring opportunity.

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

I talked with Jamie Wood after the game, and he said that the game was a lesson for the Wildcats. I joked that that was what he said following the first game against the Gophers in Minneapolis a year ago (which was 11-0 Gophers), and he said that it will continue to be a lesson until the team learns from it.

10 goals today, how many will it take tomorrow for you to be impressed?

You will note that I certainly noticed the Gophers talent and made comment in my post above. I guess the 7 goals on 21 shots in the first two periods shows that they are pretty good around the net. However, they were not challenged to score and I expected more shots (and better goaltending and defense from UNH) from them although glad they didn't :). UNH played poor and Minnie played well and I suspect they both will be better today but the Gophers will still prevail - the question is by how much!

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

UNH played a much better game today...we had four mistakes and Minne put the puck away but we passed the puck, not skated it, played thru the player not reach and slash and overall went head to head with Minne...let's be real in that Minnesota shouldn't lose a game this year....if they do it won't be 2, so they should be national champs....if UNH can play every game the way we did today, we'll do fine by year's end....everyone on UNH made strides in their own play in adjusting to playing Minne....that's why we play them! Good luck Gophers and I hope we meet you again in 4 months!

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Really hoping that UNH shows up today, because yesterday, with props to NU for taking the game, we stunk.....I don't mind if we lose down at Mathews since it is a distinct advantage after playing on the Whitt's size everyday but at least play with the same purpose we did to hold Minnesota to 4 goals on only 4 mistakes....c'mon you Wildcats....be there!

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Disadvantage my butt! "It's why we play the game"....so now I know that when UNH shows up, they can skate and play effectively....and it also helps when your goalie backs you up....a really nice win down at Mathews and more importantly 2 points....you rock Wildcats!

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Big win for UNH 3-1 over NU in their cage! The team needed that one!

I knew UNH was capable of points against this team, and thankfully they proved me right today. Yesterday was painful to watch, but great job for this team to gather together to bring their game to Boston. It would have been easy to mail this one in, and be resigned to have met the outside expectations, but Wildcat Country expects more, and this team showed that they have it. Two tough games upcoming to end the semester, and then a few weeks off to reflect, recover, regroup, and return for the second semester of play.

Gilligan has, in my mind, proven herself to be the goaltender this team plays well in front of, and who gives this team a chance to win.

As an aside, I spoke to Ms. Pickett briefly after the game at the Whitt, but didn't realize she had gotten her century point. Congrats to a very tenacious player. She had the guts and foresight to sign on with a team that, with UNH (Brown, Providence, and a few others too), led Women's hockey into the NCAA, have had great success and periods of mediocrity. These young players had (have) enough faith in our histories and traditions to choose to be part of our rebuilding processes. Thanks to all those who believe in these programs and themselves enough to wear our colors against teams who have "recently" established themselves as the benchmarks. Together, we make our leagues better, and our game endure.
