UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

The appetizer before the entree....Bears, Bobcats...bring on the main dish, Gophers!!!
Congrats to the Wildcats on the nice home win over Quinnipiac. Somehow I don't imagine Minnesota being as kind but either way it will be nice to play a team considered to be the best in the nation.

Ugly win...but a win none the less.

Hey, drop the puck.

Let's go Gophers!

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Can someone confirm the time of the game on Sunday? I've seen it posted as 2 p.m. ET (which is what is on UNH's web site currently) and I've also seen it listed as Noon ET (such as in the Hockey East thread on this board).

The Hockey East website now also lists the game as a 2 p.m. ET start, not Noon. I'm going to consider this confirmed, since I have two reliable sources (the other being UNH's website) in agreement.

The signs inside The Whit last night had both weekend games starting at 2 pm.

"The most dangerous opponent is the next opponent." I suspect that the UNH players believe this mantra for this weekend. I also suspect, human nature being what it is, that the Gophers at some basic level are not believing this to be true.

I'm not sure. Can't say I know what's in their heads, but so far they haven't exhibited any indication of taking opponents lightly. They didn't look ready for an opening period in Grand Forks. I hope there is no Turkey Day hangover.

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Coach McCloskey has set up the schedule for the Cats to be one of the toughest in recent memory. As a coach, I've always wanted my teams, especially in tournament/exhibition play, to be placed in the highest divisions against the best opponents. We improve by being placed outside of our comfort zone and getting challenged by the best. Wisconsin, SLU, Quinnipiac, Minnesota, Harvard, not to mention the tough opponents in HE....this is a very competitive schedule for a team in transition and it is great for their development. Minnesota is rock-solid and there is no question who should win based on the position that each program is in however the game of hockey offers many strange twists and I am sure the UNH girls will be trying their very best 'to put the Gophers in a hole'! Either way, I am enjoying watching the UNH team grow and am looking forward to seeing the Minnesota squad in action!

This would appear to be true on all counts! Especially the "many strange twists" part. ;)

Either way, I am enjoying watching the UNH team grow and am looking forward to seeing the Minnesota squad in action!

And we look forward to reading your honest assessment following each game! Needless to say we do hope you are duly impressed. :)

Alright .... I can't let it go anymore ..... Shouldn't it be ..... "UNH Women"

I do not see the UNH male team being referred to as "boys ....

Give it a rest ..........

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Picky picky...ya gotta have something better to write about other than that sonar! During my playing and coaching days we often referred to each other as 'the boys'...as in the boys are coming over or 'the boys played well today' not necessarily the 'men this and that'. Women, girls, ladies, gals, boys, men, guys, tomato-tomato....who cares! Next thing you will want to change the word 'girlfriend' to womanfriend!

I'm largely on your side, but we lost this fight. The biggest problem is that we didn't really have a good alternative to "girls" in the context of a more familiar term than "women." No one, including myself, seems to like the sound of "gals." I kept trying to make "guys" a genderless noun, but no one was on board with me. So it's over. "Girls" fills the role for women that both "boys" and "guys" does for men. Sometimes language does inefficient things.

I agree with this, but only up to a point. If your opponent is too much better than you are, you really don't learn anything. If you play too many opponents that are much better than you are it gets demoralizing. For instance, I thought the UNH/Minnesota series last year ended up being too much. By the end of the second period of the first game, the Wildcats just looked shellshocked. There was a four minute stretch where every puck the Gophers brought over the blueline went in. McCloskey said all the right things after the second game, but I question whether that was really a valuable experience.

On the other hand, you guys seem to be better this year, so I think that this will be a better series to watch and play in.

If there was a fight then there must have been a difference of opinion .... it's too bad "we" lost. I kind of like "inept" as a synonym for your "inefficient" ... :-)

Stick Boy .... I do appreciate your posts in support of UNH Women's Ice Hockey..

Yes .... UNH is a little better this year. It will take a few more years for parity to be achieved between East/West. Kind of like it took a while for the West to catch up to the East (later part of the 20th Century). See below .......

Strangely enough .... men's college hockey has followed the same pattern ... developing in the East .. with the West gradually becoming stronger in the NCAA .... and now there is parity between East /West.

"The UNH women's winning streak--the longest in the history of college hockey--continues for 75 games until December 1981. They are no longer invincible but still hard to beat and complete their first decade with a cumulative record of 179-13-6, with four EAIAW championships and two ECAC championships (the EAIAW becomes the ECAC in 1983). There is no denying that UNH has been a hockey power for a long, long time. However, it really didn't take that long for the West to catch up with the East. Sure, the Wildcats dominated Western club teams, but I think that all in this thread understand the game well enough to not be that impressed by that fact. One need only consider Lindenwood's season a year ago to know that the best club teams cannot compete with the best varsity teams. Once teams from the West started playing, Minnesota won a national championship in its third year, and UMD was NCAA champion in its second year. That is a little quicker than "it took a while" might suggest.

As for parity today, I don't think that the West enjoys much advantage, if any, over the East. Look at any computer ranking, and a good case can be made that the top of the ECAC has been stronger than the top half of any other league. Yes, the West has been winning the titles, but that can change in any given tournament.

As for avoiding calling the players "girls", I agree that is a good thing to do, but it does get hard at times when they constantly refer to themselves, their teammates, and opponents as "girls".

girls...women...whatever! Why is it that the women who play at their respective school's like their merchandise to simply say "hockey", not women's hockey.....because they know their athletes! Here's a thought...for all of us who love and enjoy women's hockey, be THE best advocate you can and get friends and business' to invest in them...if we get the stands full for our favorite athletes, I'm sure they'll appreciate your support more then writing here!
As for UNH vs. Minnesota this weekend, let's see how we measure up this year compared to last....that's all....any pressure for the games is on Minnesota...traveling after a major Holiday....a clean record to protect...what will the headlines be if UNH does win a game? UNH can go out and skate hard with no expectations....we're supposed to lose these games...as long as we learn and grow from this weekend, and get better for March....that said, with due respect to ARM, Brookyone and our other Minnesota brethren, Roast these Gophers!! :o)
