UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

With Gilligan back in the mix UNH now has four solid goaltenders to choose from. She played well against BU in her first game of the season. Not sure how you keep four goaltenders happy but ultimately the team and wins come first.
I heard it said about a men's team in the NCAA tournament once to the effect of, "A team with four goaltenders probably doesn't have any." On the contrary, Wisconsin went very late into its first NCAA championship season rotating three goalies, and that turned out okay. Eventually I think that you need to settle on two and mix the third in when the schedule permits, or the primary goaltender isn't developing to the extent that one would want. That might not be entirely fair to the third and fourth goalies, but as you say, the team must come first.

Fortunately, they have the right attitudes. And character. When you have someone not see action for quite some time, then come in and pick up a win and be named first star, then not dress for the next game, and yet is in the stands with the Litter Box crew cheering on her team AT AN AWAY GAME without the slightest sign of a 'tude, you know you have someone of character on your team. The same of the walk-on goalie who gets a start, plays a solid period, and gets pulled, and continues to work as hard in practice as she did prior to that game, and always has a smile on her face, you know you have someone of character you can count on.

Very Well said Hux. From what I've seen and heard the team is really close and the girls are getting along very well - that is great to hear. I've heard that the veteran players have been excellent leaders and positive role models and the newcomers are pushing all the right buttons on and off the ice. The team has great chemistry which is crucial for changing the culture, creating a winning attitude and producing results! There are many positive things happening with the program - Awesome!

Looking forward to seeing this team at Alfond Arena on Saturday.

Gilligan is it until she stumbles ... frankly, I do not think she will. One gets the impression that the coaching staff felt a need to give the goalie from across the pond a long look .... that was done .... and now the playing field is even for all the goalies,

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

I will take a shot in the dark here but I think you'll see V.V. in net at Maine and Gilligan against Quinnipiac....just a guess though.

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Really a great skate for the Wildcats up at Alfond...a big first period that stood up...Ott was huge in nets for the Black Bears, with Gilligan holding the fort for UNH.....the Cats are starting to play as a unit, moving the puck better, I just wish they could stop on the puck and control their individual puck play, but there's plenty of time and they're much better then a few weeks ago so steadily onward!

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Nice Road win for the Cats. Just checked the standings for Hockey East and it is pretty tight and UNH is back in the mix. Another win for Gilligan (right on Hux!)!

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Well...Happy Thanksgiving to my UNH fan friends! Enjoy the games and the feast. Wish I could be there...I'll likely be tuned in for the live video...if I'm done napping. No streak busting now! :)

This one has me worried per that streak I mentioned. Hope the Gophers can maintain their level of play exhibited thus far, making for a good series.

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Our UNH friends still have a game with the Bobcats to worry about before they care much about us. But yeah, have a good turkey day once it arrives.

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Bobcats and Gophers would taste better than Turkey this week. Hope those Wildcats are hungry! Happy Thanksgiving to all.
