UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Hey NUWH, come say hi between periods...just follow the vocalization, my rantings, to find me....

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

I hate losses as much as the next guy but in the NU loss, I definitely was impressed with the Wildcats game and the strides they've made this year....aside from giving an Olympian (Coyne) 2 breakaways and a 5 on 3 goal, UNH outshot the Huskies and played them even if not a bit better...obviously UNH doesn't have the type of players like Coyne, Pickett, and Esposito...we have to manufacture our goals as a team...don't get me wrong, we have great individuals but in essence no one who will carry the offense alone.....again, if the 3 pipes we hit last night would've been more cooperative, then I'm writing a different comment. ...all the teams make the playoffs this year. and I hope we keep making the huge strides we have so far this year...games like last night don't earn you 2 points but they do make a difference come April and the players draw upon the lessons from said game.....

Agree. We had a lot of chances with pucks lingering around the goal line that no one could quite get a stick on, plus the aforementioned three posts. Sometimes the 'Cats made O'Sullivan look good by shooting in to her, but at least we're getting the puck to the net and generating offense. Three lines with scoring potential every time they see the ice, and a fourth that is a steamroller. Needless to say, they need to stay out of the box, but a couple of the penalties late in the game..., well, in deference to Arm's column this week, maybe I won't go there, at least on paper.

One last thought - Carlson is starting to look a lot like Horn with the puck dangling as of late.

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

As good as we think they looked and as close as we were to NE, along with posts hit, dangles, penalties, Olympians etc etc, we gotta start winning some of these games. I know the ladies are competing and in many cases controlling the play but at this point the wins count especially against the team in the middle of the pack. I am a fan of Wildcat Hockey and do see an improvement over the last couple years and that is great. The team/players have to start displaying the consistency required and stop turning the puck over needlessly - puck management is a key term and very important in today's game and the Cats struggle with this between the top of the circles of both ends through the middle of the ice - we turn the puck over far too often and it is costing us goals and opportunity.

Personally, I think they played like @#%? the first period. This isn't the first time they have come out flat, and they need to play 60 minutes if they want to take points home at the end of the night.

I could be off the mark, but I got the feeling their skates weren't dialed in to the ice conditions. The Whitt is typically warm and the ice softer than it looked and sounded last night.

It was nice seeing the UNH fans up there . And in deference to the column I wont' rip on the refs TOO much. But I have to ask can anyone out there honestly say that the 'roughing' call on St. Martin was legit? It was possibly one of the worst calls I've seen all season and could've had a major impact on the game, I know I laughed about it and all but seriously.

Ever since I started traveling up to Lake Whit NU has done well, 2 regulation wins and a shoot out win. I think this team is just built for the bigger ice with their speed. And they take advantage of it. Though they slept through the first half of the second period a Coyne breakaway woke them up.

UNH is a good team come tournament time that I know I don't want to see, especially since they play well at Matthews.

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Thanks for making the trip NU Doghouse. I'll be in Beantown tomorrow for the UNH-BU tilt at WBA. I don't really remember the penalty on St. Martin (early in the 3rd) so I can't comment there - I must have still been at the snack bar :D I do know that the shorty by Coyne really hurt, it changed the momemtum and then you got another one shortly after on the 5-on-3. As much as we would like to visit Matthews Arena this post-season, we prefer to stay in Durham for the 1st round of the playoffs. Third and fourth place are up for grabs so let's both beat up on the Friars and Catamounts for the remainder of the regular season.

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Doghouse - I remember the play now. It was the spin move that Kristina Lavoie put on the defenders on the 1-on-2 rush. St. Martin thumped Ti in the back as she was making the move - sending her sprawling to the ice. I recall that I was not sure if the ref would blow the whistle or not...but I was not totally surprised by the penalty. I think they let that stuff go more in the WCHA from the games I have seen.

Would be nice to pull off a win today but the Cats gotta play harder and more consistent than Thursday night for sure! Go Cats Go!

I think the effort was good yesterday, and overall I wasn't unhappy with the game. You are right though - it's time to be more consistent and find a way to beat the upper echelon teams. BU looked vulnerable enough to beat yesterday, but the keys to beating these teams are to stay out of the box, and convert on some of the plays that are goal potential. It seems like there are a lot of instances in which we have a good chance - a shot on net with a big, juicy rebound, and either there isn't a Wildcat crashing the net, or they are a stride to the left or right of nailing it. It also seems like they're holding the puck a little too long once they bring the puck into the offensive zone, allowing the defenders to get into blocking position.

I'm glad Northeastern and BU are the last games played leading into the Vermont series. The two games this weekend are crucial to securing the most optimal playoff spot. UNH has to approach them with the same speed and intensity, and bring a killer instinct at the net, or UVM will make us pay, and payback is not easy against Douville in net.

Speaking of netminders, I would be remiss of I didn't say that Gilly's performance yesterday was a big reason we were competitive with BU.

Re: UNH WildcatS 2012-'13: The Dawn of New Prominence

Gilligan is playing well. That game was very win-able for UNH yesterday and it looked like they got more confident as the game went on and stayed close. I find it frustrating however that 1) pucks bounce off their sticks far to easy and often, 2) that they turn the puck over too often and in vulnerable areas and 3) that they pass a lot to teammates in transition that are covered or are standing next to an opponent. One of the strengths of their game has been puck protection and sustaining pressure down low in the offensive zone - that didn't happen much in the BU game. They do have to stay outta the penalty box for sure!!

This weekend is one of the biggest of the season given the standings and need for UNH to advance ahead. I do hope the team can put it together and get an important four point weekend.

And that's all I have to say about that!

Looking forward to a repeat in February!

DC you don't seem excited enough for something that big.

Haha. I'm excited every time one of our goaltenders makes a save. Gilly has been making some big ones. Worthy of some kudos! When she stops Coyne on a breakaway I will be even more excited!

I get your enthusiasm, just like my reaction for O'Sullivan's first win when we last played up at Lake Whit.

As for the last part may it never happen!
