Re: Unh vs lowell in manchester saturday march 30 , is four wins to much to ask for .
Fascinating match-up tonight ... from my standpoint, last night's UNH victory was important for the program, in what was the first real postseason experience for about half the squad. That it came against a Denver team that was similarly struggling down the stretch of the regular season/early postseason is noteworthy, but a win is a win, and no one gets style points for winning against "hot" teams vs. "slumping" teams. The task at hand is to find a way to win. Nothing else matters. And UNH found a way to win, and for the better part of the last 45 or so minutes finally looked very much like the team that finished 2012 so strongly. Let's hope they pick up tonight where they left off last night.
The injuries to Goumas and Downing are unfortunate, but everyone has to deal with injuries at this time of the season. UNH *found* five (5) goals last night from among the rest of the squad, so if they can even find another 2-3 goals tonight AND (more importantly) continue with the same all-around defensive effort, they've got a chance.
UML looked like a well-oiled, focused and determined machine last night, but Wisco looked like they were (surprisingly) "just happy to be there" after their surprising WCHA tourney success. I'm sure Lowell would like nothing more than to pay back UNH for the early-season pain the 'Cats inflicted on them in the 3-game season series sweep, and there's no question that over the last two seasons, UML has a huge advantage in "big game" experience, which I put a lot of stock in. IF Lowell gets ahead in this one early, they will roll to their first-ever appearance in the FF, and if they do, I like their chances of at least making it to the Finals. BUT ...
... IF UNH can keep this one close, or even get themselves a lead, you have to wonder how Lowell would react to that? Sometimes certain teams just match up better with others. Providence was *that* team for UNH this season, but maybe UNH will prove to be *that* team for Lowell?? Obviously, I'm hoping that proves to be the case, but it will take complete focus, total determination, and an extra emotional lift for UNH to pull this off. Lowell is the type of team that has shown it can win a 1-0 game, so there can't be the early game "gift" or "feeling out period", which UNH got away with last night.
Coach Umile and his staff have a great opportunity to prove their postseason naysayers (myself included) wrong tonight, and I'm hoping they find a way to pull it off.
