UNH Recruits: 2012-2018

Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2018

Just curious... Is there any restriction on DI programs cherry-picking DIII programs? I don't hear much about that happening and gotta believe there are kids in DIII programs who where overlooked/underrated and could boost a sagging DI program. Of course, thinking very specifically UNH, and microscopically, their abysmal defensive group.

Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2018

Let's hope Mike is on the phone or email with the prospects, showing them how last night demonstrates how close UNH is to being competitive with the top HE team(s), and how one of them could make the difference. Let's also hope its a skating defenseman.

For 2018, he needs 3 more, and I hope one of them is Cameron -- he's big bodied, skates well enough and has a very good stick and pretty good dekes/offensive instincts. Plays in nearby Andover for Robbie Barker, one of Souza's UNH contemporaries (though they didn't overlap), and with a NS home, UNH would be a slight advantage. I remember Kullen being excited by another Nova Scotia defenseman playing at Lawrence, who he described as a "Ray bourque type" -- it was Dave MacIntyre. When UNH flushed (in 1987) its failed 1985 group of four freshmen defensemen, he was one of the new guard of Kevin Dean, MacIntyre, Plavsic. While Cameron is not MacIntyre in style, he's a Jeff Serowik type. With Corson Green, and perhaps a nice AJHL (Ian Mitchell) or BCHL type (Jake Harrison) they could make a very good core. Of course, that's a lot of ifs.

I find myself reading and paying more attention to the recruiting piece these days than ever before. Hope Coach Souza is up to the challenge, which seems to be growing by the day. Thanks to C-H-C and 'Watcher (and others) for your insights on the recruiting piece.

Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2018

I don't think he's that raw. Looks like his skating is a good amount better than Corson Green's. He has a really good stick, taking passes and getting a shot off without fumbling the puck. Seems to have a good head on for taking chances -- though the level of play allows him more time than he will eventually have. Will need to see how his decision making picks up the less time he has.

... Coach Umile polishes up the Beemer, Coach Stewart plays pinochle with the Whittemore Center maintenance crew, and Coach Souza wonders *** he was thinking when he agreed to this phased transition plan.

Across the street, BS35+3 thinks it's another swell day in the neighborhood, taking a nice brisk walk during lunch to check out progress on the soon-to-be "Bowes Field at MacDonnell Stadium lit by Scarano's Lights".

Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2018

Beemer? That's a fun little sports car. I see Umile more as a Lincoln or Buick kind of guy. Built in the USA, perhaps even the Boston suburbs.

Brinson Pisachnuk and brother committed to Arizona State.

Ford shut down its Assembly Square plant in Somerville in the late '50's.

If it takes UNH that long to redevelop the Men's Hockey program, count me out now.

Mike O'Leary to Notre Dame. Top prospects continue to fly off the board, and we can only be left to assume that 1) Souza and Stewart are not even on these kids 2) they cannot effectively close these kids or 3) my biggest fear, are being mentored by Umile to wait on these kids.** Either way UNH continues to be left behind...

** as a result of his frustration over decommitments, difficult deferral decisions, major junior defections, unknown academic issues that may arise, and/or lack of development of the early commitments already in the program.

Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2018

Watcher - I really hope Eiserman gets a shot with Poturalski and Kelleher next year. He's a similar player to Correale, with better size and better play-making ability. He has more assists than Correale this year, despite the difference in linemates, PP time, overall ice time and role. I think his speed, big body and puck possession game (and another year of experience for all three) would make that line even better and I certainly think he has enough hands and scoring ability to pop in a bunch of goals (and make a BIG jump) playing with those two. It seems like a perfect fit to me and gives UNH more options for building second and third lines to add offensive depth. Why do you think Nazarian is a better fit??

Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2018

I'm not trying to predict lines, just place the top forwards skill-wise at the top to get an idea of who will be top line and bottom line players in the pipeline, but I did make your suggestion. With Kalinowski and Bourque now clearing out, they are starting to give Souza some wiggle room for his own guys (even though their scholarship money would be minimal, at best.)

And the D. They now have only 17 spots tied up in 2018, so about 10 more players neeed.
