UNH Recruits: 2012-2018

Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2018

If they're out working the USHL - I'd love for them to find UNHs first European born recruit in '99 Eeli Tolvanen (Sioux Falls)...

Just tweaked your post a bit there, Dan. Langway and a horde of flustered Canadians made me do it. :D

With the various NLI's signed/announced ... what to make of Charlie Kelleher not being among them?

Wondered the same thing myself and I know I keep asking about Nick Nonis...coz you know, we need D. Still a few more (2 exact) days left for NLI's then it's into April to August (ugh) we go to see who else shakes out....BTW a question, when a player does sign, do they have to come the next year? (how long does the NLI stay in affect?)

Haha, fair point - I guess Canada is only unofficially the 51st state!

Not sure on Kelleher - and he may still sign. I'm sure he'd love to play with his brother, but he is still young, slight and not the truly dynamic talent Tyler is. He wouldn't be a bad candidate for another year in Juniors. I could easily understand whatever decision they make...

If he does come - the Kellehers would be the first brothers to play together at UNH since the Haydars. And before them, the Morrows. And before them, Greg probably knows (if any) but I am not that old!

Much of what I've read/heard indicates Nonis is a walk-on, therefore no NLI and no announcement until he signs an aid agreement upon official acceptance academically at UNH...

No NLI doesn't mean he's not coming, but I also wouldn't look at him as a savior for the D. For the next couple seasons UNHs defensive success lies mainly in the development of the current group...

Thanks for clarifying that for me Dan..appreciate it.

Watcher - your thoughts on the MacAndrews pick-up? I'd agree with your assessment of Souza (and not Stewart) attending Robertson's signing as an indicator he is definitely the lead assistant and there is likely truth to his heir apparency. So this seems to be his first domino. MacAdams seems like a solid, if unspectacular start for The Souza era...??

If they're out working the USHL - I'd love for them to find UNHs first foreign born recruit in '99 Eeli Tolvanen (Sioux Falls)...

Savo Mitrovic was born in Belgrade. He was recruited from Canada, as I'm sure Watcher will point out.

I love the fact that the first post in this entire thread references Collin MacDonald as a 2012 recruit, playing for the Hitmen!!

Now that is a sobering thought. Does anyone know when is the HE trade deadline date? ;)

Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2018

Love the photo. Coach Umile has his car keyes on the table, as if he's double parked outside. You can barely see the gun Souza is holding to Robinson's side while he's signing. ;)

You're right, MacAnderson is a solid, if unspectacular signing. My general philosophy was more McCloskey (go for the top end kids and fill rest late with extras) than Borek (sign a bunch of extras early).
Let's see if there is any big splash coming down the pike, either for the D this year, or down the road, a core for his first 2018-2020 years.

Or in the words of Tony Mazz, get one horse rather than a bunch of ponies.

Thanks for the compliment. I was going to say the Hemingways but Brett came the year after Colin left. The Haydars and the Morrows are the only other ones that I can think of that played together. Gordie Clark's brother Gary played at UNH for a bit in the late 70's and Mike Burkart, a captain in the 70's was followed a few years later by his brother Scott. That's about it for brothers. BTW, I am still waiting for the first son of a former UNH player to play for the Wildcats. Has never happened.

Off topic, to Watcher, Dan, or whoever. It has bothered me no end over the years that UNH does not target a player from New Hampshire in every recruiting class. Sure, UNH has had plenty of players from New Hampshire but, over the years, most of the good ones have gone someplace else. Personally I've always felt that this inattention to home state players has hurt their support throughout the state. Any thoughts?

Drives me mad. Loving Chris Miller though.

People are off base when they state UNH hockey has not recruited top NH kids over the past decade. This is simply not true as almost all have been heavily recruited by UNH and visited the campus (some multiple times). Most were offered athletic and/or academic scholarships. Some might have been asked to play a year or two in the USHL or other Leagues and the package might not have been as enticing as some other school's offer. These student athletes may have decided they did not want to attend or play at UNH, but they were all recruited and many were down to two schools. They were torn between the home state school and other New England and Midwest schools. Many students decided not to accept, but most were offered. If you want to argue that they should have given them all four year scholarships promising them top two lines or top defense pairings, fire away. I ask that you stop asserting that the program did not heavily recruit NH kids, because they did and still do.

Andy & Quintin Brickley were only 2+ years apart (the former left in '82, the latter matriculated in '84), but it always felt like the gap was much bigger - maybe because Andy was a future NHL'er, and Quintin clearly wasn't. AB's time overlapped with the last really good years of the Holt era ... yet by the time QB arrived, he was part of some of the worst UNH teams in my fan lifetime. Hard to believe that was roughly 30 years ago now ...

The fact that you are referencing the last ten years says to me that I just read the Scott Borek version of history. I have no idea who you are but, if what you say is true, then the lack of results ten years and beyond is a black mark on the entire coaching staff going back to the early 70's. I will remind you that the greatest player UNH ever had from the state was Frank Roy (Berlin), and he graduated in 1979, 46 freakin' years ago. It has always bothered me that UNH Hockey has not done a great job in branding the program throughout the state. My wife is from North Conway originally and I can tell you that, up there, the UNH name was never a factor when she was growing up. I have a good friend who lives in southwestern NH, near Keene. Out there UNH might as well be in a foreign country. As for border towns, more focused on Boston than ole State U. The Seacoast, Concord and Manchester, that's it. Contrast that to Maine Hockey which, when Walshie was coach, made the effort to brand the program across the state, despite the fact that it was remote from most of the population centers of the state. UNH could do way more in this regard. My guess is we will have to wait until Souza takes over to find out if things change.

Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2018

Yikes, how I forgot those two is beyond me. Probably should have researched instead of writing off the cuff. Thanks Chuck.

Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2018

Wait a minute. Somebody pinch me. You mean UNH actually signed a kid that BU and PC were interested in?

Not trying to burst the bubble... but...

"Interested in" can mean a lot of things. You see it in football all the time. A kid gets a letter from Alabama that they send to half a million football players in the US and all of a sudden the kid has "interest" from Alabama (and usually ends up at Stonybrook or Umass).
