UNH Off Season Thread 2011

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

UNH needs some one younger on the staff. However of the two this would not have been the one I would want to replace. Lassonde did both D and Goal. However based on UNH's run of good to great goaltending he was very affective.

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

This is basically a lateral move. It’s interesting that a person who is a Associate Head Coach for 18 years …in a area where he is from…..and his mother works at UNH…..makes a move like this. Was there a promise of more at Denver in the future……

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

Best of luck to coach Lassonde, will be a big lost I think, Now who comes in to replace him? That will be very intersting to watch

I would love to see McCloskey come back over to the Mens' program.

Other preferences would be Glenn Stewart (UNH alum making big contributions at Merrimack), Pat Foley (unless Northeastern is a done deal), or Chris Serino (long shot)...

Foley will be at NU.

The issue here is this is not a lateral rule. He will double his salary by going to DU. I would hardly call that a lateral move. UNH has to be careful they dont get caught in the ice age. They have not been progressive with their program. UNH is a product of their own success, they are close to having the lowest paid coaches and budgets in Hockey East. The problem is they are at the top of the standings every year and administration looks the other way and this could be the start of a slide unless the school wakes up.

There was a news story not too long ago that Dick Umile was the highest paid state employee in NH...he has also won the school two HEA titles, I doubt the school overlooked that in his contract negotiations...

Double the salary?….where is that published….I would have no doubt there was some incentive regarding salary was given but it hard to believe double. Also I was referring to the job being a lateral move.

RPI fan……

Ask around. He was making 62K at UNH. Providence and Lowell assistants making over 100K on new staffs. He should leave. UNH better figure it out and soon.

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

Im very familiar with his resume, thank you. Just wondering why in that individuals opinion he would be the best bet of the bunch..aside from what is written on his resume. Especially when you have a professional head coach, a coach at one of the top prep schools in the country, and a coach who has helped resurrect a terrible program and build them into one that is arguably stronger than UNH is at the current time despite not having the same class of facility, budget, resources, or tradition to work with.

All have nice resumes, so I'm wondering what sets one apart from the other...to make that kind of statement one would have to have some intimate knowledge of each candidate, no?

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

The goalie coach for Sean Tremblay's NH Jr. Monarchs is Rob Day (http://www.thegoalieguy.com/introduction.html).
Day's students have included Brian Foster, Jim Mello (Dartmouth), Brian Billett (BC) and Casey DeSmith (UNH). If Tremblay replaces Lassonde, maybe Day would become UNH's assistant "volunteer" goalie coach.

The school is in serious financial trouble at the moment. All the programs got money taken out of the budget and other schools seem to be capitalizing on this. It's a shame.

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

Just got back from two weeks in Ireland and the Lassonde move is one of the first things I see in my in box. This is a big loss for UNH. Lassonde is recognized as one of the top goalie coaches in the country and his work with UNH goalies in the past ten years has been outstanding. In addition, his network when it comes to tabbing goalie prospects has been invaluable to UNH. He is going to be missed big time. I can only hope that Umile was not blindsided by this (I doubt it) and had time to think of his next step. The timing is awful considering that the season starts in six weeks or so.

I do believe that comments about the finances of UNH contributing to this move are spot on. UNH is in dire financial straights both campus wide and within the athletic department. The state's support of UNH has never been particularly good and with the economy the way it is and Tea Party types now in control in Concord, I don't see things getting better anytime soon. Lassonde has been around long enough to know where things are headed. He has been sought after for a long time, both as a head coach and assistant. When you step back and observe the landscape, it is not surprising that he made the move.

Did not know Foley was headed to Northeastern either. Curious move I'd say.

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

Trembley is not the right guy. You need an experienced recruiter with connections in both USHL and BCHL, not a recruiter who is not well regarded by those two leagues, which he is not. USHL and BCHL do not like EJ coaches and orgs as they try to hold kids back and have intentionally screwed them in the past with showcase events. Not saying him in particular but his org and the EJ is looked at as a joke by the two key leagues UNH needs to have success.

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

FYI - From USHR:
Look for UNH to fill their assistant’s position as soon as today. The names most discussed at the Beantown Classic earlier this week – though you can be sure there are others -- were New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs’ head coach/GM Sean Tremblay, Merrimack assistant Glenn Stewart, Brown assistant Mark White, and former player agent Josh Ciocco. All of the above know the player pool, but some would have to take a pay cut as UNH, despite the fact that its flagship sport is hockey, pays its assistants less than other Hockey East schools. In the past, Tremblay, because he's well-compensated for running one of the top junior programs in the country, has turned down offers to take an assistant's position at other Div. I programs. But the Newburyport, Mass. resident is said to be interested in the Wildcats' opening.
