UNH Men’s Hockey 22-23: the start of something new, or more of the same?

Is the Phoenix rising for coach Souza? Whatever, it is gratifying to see this teams efforts finally bring them some sense of success. Still having to work really hard to score but in our house we think the difference these past 3 games has been Fessy’s strong games but more importantly has been keeping the other teams from having us in a 2-0 hole 10 minutes in. Makes it very difficult for a goal deficient team to not start gripping their sticks a bit tight.
Another nice win for the boys! In looking at our stats I noticed that my man Jensen is the only Cat with a positive +/- at +8. Lots of blocks also, but harder to find that number anywhere. He has always been such an under the radar guy but today’s commentators talked his play up.
Go Cats.

Well that's it the point you made about not having to claw their way out of a 3 goal deficit like they did at Union...and would agree that Fezzie was the key today esp in the first where UMass was def in control.

Also fortunate our PK was up to the task given Umass's 30% success rate! Good for the boys and yep Jensen is kind of the unsung hero...

Onto the Riverbirds :-)

Someone posted on the Maine thread the hope that the lottery winner would build them a new rink in Orono. :-)

I hope they're not banking on this, Snives. I mean, despite the data being strongly in favor of 'em and all ...

Lebanon ME to Durham NH = 28 miles (40 mins.)
Lebanon ME to North Andover MA - 70 miles (1.3 hours)
Lebanon ME to Lowell MA = 80 miles (1.5 hours)
Lebanon ME to Boston MA = 95 miles (1.8 hours)
Lebanon ME to Lebanon NH = 108 miles (2.0 hours)
Lebanon ME to Worcester MA = 120 miles (2.0 hours)
Lebanon ME to Providence RI = 145 miles (2.5 hours)
Lebanon ME to Amherst MA = 156 miles (2.7 hours)
Lebanon ME to Storrs CT = 166 miles (2.8 hours)
Lebanon ME to Orono ME = 177 miles (3.0 hours)

Orono ME to Fredericton NB = 187 miles (2.7 hours)
Orono ME to Burlington VT = 202 miles (3.5 hours)
Orono ME to Schenectady NY = 266 miles (4.0 hours)
Orono ME to Moncton NB = 292 miles (4.0 hours)
Orono ME to Charlottetown PEI = 393 miles (6.0 hours)

There's a better chance Rick & Marty Lagina from Oak Island NS will bequeath them a portion of the treasure they're looking for. Not a long ride via sea plane or puddle jumper ... maybe an hour or two, as the crow flies anyway ...

Too funny! So if the Lebanon, Maine, lottery winner built a new rink in Woostah, maybe the Crusaders would move ahead of the Falcons and the Pioneers for the coveted twelfth slot in HEA? The lottery winner could easily spare some chump change to build some new locker rooms at the Whitt, but for the long-standing border dispute that goes back to the decree by King George II in 1740.

None of the teams remaining on our schedule have an 11-goal scorer like we have. :-)

In this article about the game yesterday Souza mentions a couple of key players missing/lost I'm assuming its Cafarelli/Winters? An interesting read..and I'd agree that despite whatever UMass is going through this season, it was the biggest W of the season, FWIW dept. I don't have any delusions about where we might head going forward, but am for right now, enjoying this little run.

I thought that Will Margel filled in admirably for Carafelli on the first line. Anyone know why Carafelli and Winters are “lost”? Injuries? I think that one key to the UNH win was taking only one minor penalty to Blaisdell late in the first, although apparently Minuteman fans were unhappy about the refs not making more calls against UNH. Truth is we caught UMass-Flagship amidst their most precipitous slide this season in which the Minutemen have apparently forgotten how to score goals. Combine that with good defensive play by UNH on the blue line and in net.

It appears UNH's Eastern European contingent has emerged from the witness protection program.

Only remaining question this season is whether the players do enough to get MS7 to the final year of his deal?

Dont look now, but just saw that all returning UNH students for this semester must submit a negative covid test before they can come on campus. But no negative test to attend a game at the Whitt that is ON CAMPUS? Why is this still a thing? Links to ANY stories of a UNH student passing away from Covid? (notice the FROM covid, not WITH)

How soon before we start hearing - "Gotta waare ya mask!"? Well at UMass Boston and Rhode Island College, they already have. Duke may also require.

You haven't been paying close attention, Whalers, have you (tut-tut)?

Our very own GrouchyUNHer has been nagging us about this since he showed up a couple of weeks ago.

Interestingly, since GUNHer arrived back on the scene, UNH has been undefeated. Annoying but true.

Embedded confidential WIS sources within USCHO report receiving inquiries from "QuannapowittHomeSlice" who has been asking for GUNHer's real-life contact details, as apparently QHS wants to get him on the payroll to ensure continued success in Durham, as he can't risk another extended absence from everyone's favorite grouch. Stay tuned ...

Not behind a paywall for me, but here's the full text:

Jan 10, 2023

The University of New Hampshire’s women’s basketball game against Maine scheduled for Wednesday at Lundholm Gym in Durham has been postponed because of COVID safety protocols within the Wildcat women’s basketball program, the America East Conference announced Tuesday. The game will be made up Monday, Feb. 13 (Time TBA).

UNH (5-11, 0-4 America East) will play its next game at Bryant on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 1 p.m.

The January 14 game was also postponed, already made up on January 16.

Some people prefer not being sick.

Nice to see you around these parts Darius! I assume you'll be at your 'home away from home' arena Friday night, the Tsongas? Am debating...reports of alittle snow and a trip slated to Fla for Monday deter my thinking; last thing I need...is to get covid (again this winter) prior to my trip.

GUNHer, it just so happens that we here at the WIS Estate have a secret clip of *someone* indeed threatening the entire UNH coaching staff. Not pointing fingers, mind you, but the suspect caught on this closed circuit camera was later reported to have indeed escaped from your Happy Oaks shortly after UNH's lost weekend in Schenectady, is still at large, and believed to be armed, dangerous, and highly incontinent. Check this out ...
