UNH Men’s Hockey 22-23: the start of something new, or more of the same?

Who is belittling? A gentle reminder on hypocrisy and how things can easily play out. Seems you may not care what the player did as being a big deal, but an NHL commentator said he should go back to Russia and fight against the Ukraine. How is THAT for not caring what people do? Would the commentator have the same viewpoint for players in my Hockey Night in Nowhere scenario? Maybe I was just being "ironical".

You were probably being "satirical", Whalers. I think any of us who read your post objectively understood that. I have faith in the intelligence and perception of this group, even when we disagree on stuff. But the preferred narratives in MSM these days have strayed far from anything resembling normalcy and tolerance. To those behind the prevailing narrative, "tolerance" is what YOU are supposed to do when someone tries to force-feed you THEIR views. But ask THEM to reciprocate - not anyone on here, mind you, but in academia and the MSM - and then there is no tolerance, only derision, damnation and cancellation (and with Provorov, anti-religious bigotry).

But a funny thing happened in real life in the aftermath of attempts to tar & feather/cancel Provorov ...

Ivan Provorov jerseys sell out days after NHL player refuses to wear LGBT pride jersey | Washington Examiner

... but I'm sure you didn't read or hear about that in the prevailing narrative, did you??

For those keeping score at home ... if you dare not wear gear momentarily that conflicts with your personal beliefs in a pre-game skate, you are pond scum. But if you pile on with criticism of that decision by saying something like this ...

"Nothing scares me more than any human being who says I’m not doing this because of my religious beliefs. Because when you look at people’s lives who normally say that publicly, you’d throw up at what you saw. You would throw up at what you saw. And I’ve seen that a million times in a lot of different ways. So don’t give me that. With respect, don’t gimme that, because no one’s perfect. Don’t feed me the religious beliefs line and all of a sudden the NHL is going to back off this."

... then you are "wonderful" and "virtuous" and tolerant, and not at all an anti-religious bigot. And mind you, at no point did Provorov claim to be "perfect", again unless I'm missing something here?!?

To be clear ... gay folks are free to play and participate in hockey (or any other sport) in any way they so choose, I don't think they need a bunch of SJW do-gooders patronizing them to earn their business/devotion. And I think some of us would be pretty surprised to find that not everyone in the gay community wears rainbow-themed gear or hang rainbow flags outside their homes because maybe - just maybe - like many of the rest of us, they do not live their lives in strict conformance with some single programmed vision of what their lives should look like, what they should think or do, who they should vote for, etc. Y'know ... kinda like the rest of us, actually - not some cartoonish stereotype.

Exhibit One: HR pointed out in her recent post that "OMG some hockey players are gay (even some soccer players I bet ...)" and of that I have no doubt. In fact, turns out the NFL (of all places) had one about 50 or so years ago, who earned respect in virtually all corners of the NFL (not the least of which from his one year HC Vince Lombardi) for his reliable, no-nonsense play. Only those close to him even had the slightest clue ...

Watcher, I remember who Staub, Carter, Dawson and Raines were, but I have never been to Olympic Stadium (driven past it), worn a tri-colour hat or pined for their return to Montreal. The Whalers on the other hand had some of the best unis ever, though I only remember them when they were in Boston.

You have no idea what you missed out on, Whalers. Magical times north of the border, unlikely to return in my lifetime.

My last intersection with your Whalers at The Mall was a night late in the Red Wings' record breaking '96 regular season, when I made the trip for a meaningless game and ended up seeing Chris Osgood shoot the puck into the Whalers' empty net, becoming the 3rd NHL goalie to ever score a goal, and only the second to actually shoot the puck into the net himself (Ron Hextall had done it earlier).

Seeing that you were a fan of the Original Whalers (is your last name Pleau BTW?), I think you might enjoy this video ...

Welp missed again with a 6-2 score eek!. Out skated most of the night pretty much took LeClerc out of the game..the flukey goal was fun to watch tho...

GUNHer must be crestfallen ... no more three game winning streak, perhaps all Julie-annie's fault then?!?

Terrible game. Fezz looked awful especially on the 2nd goal that went 5 hole. The short lived undefeated 2023 is over. Thankfully the Giants play at 8:15 so I will have something to watch midway through tomorrows game.

Article on Cy LeClerc on College Hockey News: https://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2023/01/20_Local-Produce-LeClerc-a-Big.php

I'd like to draw attention to this quote -

“I went to the games as a kid, loved the atmosphere and the fans,” LeClerc said. “I liked watching Max Gildon and Tyler Kelleher.”

Any guesses as to why LeClerc - or any young player - would be attracted to watching those two? And want to join a program that featured those two? Thoughts on what more players like that could do to attract more players like LeClerc?

It's not an accident he mentioned those two.

Well first off TyK and Max were exemplary players period who had inherent skills right off the mark. And nothing personal to other UNH skaters who have come in since they knew how to play the game. A young player like Cy could see that and wanted to be a part of that. No doubt TyK felt the same way as Cy did as he watched UNH growing up and wanted to be a part of that success.

Of course no player is without fault but what we could do with those types back in our lineup? They help bring in more players like that and that's where you build decent depth which we have not had the luxury of like other winning teams which I view as one of the programs issues these past few seasons.

Thankfully despite what's been going down since those two left we have a local kid who's having a great rookie season- pretty much off his own talents (though he was or appeared to be fairly neutralized last night-thats just good coaching on Norms part) UNH is fortunate he chose his local team; no doubt hes a bright spot.

Appreciated the articles POV of the youth of this team...but there is no doubt UNH needs to bring in players who make other kids want to skate here...like Cy. Not sure I hold his enthusiasm for them winning the next 8 out 10 but at least he's hopeful.

His comment about the players coming in next season coupled with the experience this current team is gaining...hope that pans out. We know we are going to see no change in coaching (if ever) until the end of 2024.

Who knows? I'm encouraged by what he and the other frosh are brining to table...but I hate to say it will be curious to see how Cy (and other guys like Dunlap, Devlin) do NEXT season...which I think will be telling and will speak directly to who's behind the bench. Those players will have made the adjustment to playing college hockey and should experience growth..shouldn't they?

I'm probably off the mark from what you and others might feel about the questions you raise here Dan.
Hoping we can have some decent input from others out there who have followed this program from the get go...

Ps No Cafarelli and Winters again last night FWIW dept. And I thought, and if anyone noticed, that the 'Cats seemed like they were not able to keep up
well with the UML rush; seemed to be a couple of strides behind? Fitness? Def need a better game from everyone tonight from the pipes on up..

As a lifelong Giants fan, I'm not getting my hopes up on tonight's game (either one, actually).

NYG are playing with house money at this point. Give the new front office/Daboll another year or two, and we'll see what they can get done. It's been a while since there was any realistic optimism down there, though, and this has been a refreshing year.

Dan's post on LeClerc and his young UNH idols just goes to show what can be done when you go out and get exciting talented players, and sell it to your fanbase. Not much getting OR selling being done in Durham lately ...

Chuck Chuck Chuck. You gotta believe. I’m with you tough game against Philly but Giants are 6-0 against 1 seeds in the last six. 3rd time around against a divisional foe, anything can happen.

They say you can't beat a team 3 times which is why we will win when we play UML down there again haha.

Being from Jacksonville of course am rooting for the Jags!

Cats now need to run the table (win last nine regular season games) and get to the Garden if they want to end season with a winning record.

Ughh too bad UNH lost that one but I thought they played a great game...didn't quit and it's something to build on. Great goaltending on both sides: hurts to lose but night and day performance by Fezzie and the rest of the team.

Quite the weekend in HE...look at Vermont sweeping the Beagles on their own ice. Going to be quite the battle for the top teams for best in the regular season and beyond.

Keep your heads up 'Cats!!!

Devlin’s ninth!

Way to go little Kevin!! :-) Went to the spaghetti dinner before the game and saw the President near our table so of course I called to him "there's the Prez" he came over with a big
smile on his face and chatted with me and my friend (the fan who has a ton of Frozen Four pins on her jersey) and he asked if he could take a pic of us with him for , you know, PR kind of
thing so of course, we obliged. Met a few of the team who wasn't playing tonight as well there. Despite the loss had a good time at the game just wish they had gotten the W they deserved (IMHO)

Onto MC...

The two teams aren't even in the same universe talent-wise. Still, it was nice to see a low-talent team with very few upgrades from the previous seasons' train wrecks somehow win a lot of close games, qualify for the playoffs AND even win a real post-season game for the first time in about a decade. Bring on next season ASAP. If that's not an example for the team we all follow here on this thread, I don't know what is ...

Well, yeah, that's about right...its been a decade since we have been in a Regional, so getting to next season and hoping for something better has to be on every UNH fan's mind. Sorry about your Giants; I remember the year everyone thought the Patriots would smoke em; the principal I had at the time wore his NY Giants jacket to school that Friday and we ribbed him...Come Monday most of us were avoiding him. And didn't they beat the Pats twice in the Super Bowl (football isn't my strong suit). And too bad for my Jags...but at least they gave it a shot. Playing some golf I imagine; maybe at my dad's former course Hyde Park Golf club...
