UNH- How Far West Do We Go?

Actually Sparkee, most of the analysis (as the subsequent highlighted poster below) led to the conclusion that I was probably being unfair to Coach Davis. Bolded it even. Maybe next time, you'll provide me some tech support and show me how to enhance the bold parts with red & green flashing colors, eh??
“Probably wrong” ???

It is abundantly clear to everyone(including you) that you are 100% wrong. The guy had way more credentials than needed for acceptance, inclusion, equality without any DEI mantra. You manufactured and labeled him as a token DEI hire and it blew up in your face.

I don’t have any interest in helping you beyond this…

When you are clearly wrong and don’t just say you are wrong and follow it up with all this nonsense to justify why you think what you said was ok then it cheapens the admission of being wrong. It cheapens any sense of apology.

No, I wont help you get out of your hole - not until you put the shovel down.

Good content here, Darius. Really added to the discussion in a positive way. You said your piece, I said mine (to you and others), and then ... blah. Kudos.

Yup. That was me saying I was probably being unfair to Coach Davis (but not UNH) in my initial comments. His UNH career is still a work in progress as well.

Fixed your post. The bolded part is pretty much you advocating for the continued need for virtue signaling, even after the US Supreme Court struck down race conscious admissions as of May 2024 (a year and a half ago), putting official DEI on college campuses on life support in the process.

So ... to be clear (which it appears some folks got, and others are still struggling with) ... my last post concluded in an admission I was probably wrong to infer Coach Davis was a DEI hire (good if not great record at time of hire; his career is still a work in progress, and for the record, I'm still hoping Davis does fantastic things with UNH Hoops) ... but to pretend that DEI wasn't in the mix of UNH's thinking when he was hired, with all due respect, is fanciful thinking. Not saying anything was illegal, as UNH's actions on his hire were well before May 2024's SCOTUS ruling, but please ... let's not be disingenuous, OK??

I honestly hope potty doesn't get his/her/its knickers in a twist over the time of my post. My family and my employer still hold dibs over my daytime hours.
Buford, it’s clear that most people here want you to take a posting vacation and seriously consider not coming back. They’re seeing what i spotted long ago - arrogance, presumptuousness, bullying and troubling ignorance from you.

Just give it a rest.

Was not aware of the other HC paychecks in the same conference, but I support the open market, and if this is what Santos and UNH have chosen, then we'll see what happens. Just as an FYI, I do not support UNH ending Football (others on here disagree, and that's fine, but to me its unrealistic for a school that just built their new stadium), any more than I supported them cutting Baseball and Lacrosse to get into the good graces of Title IX.

But the not-so-new AD's record to date is hardly impressive ... to my knowledge, fantastic Soccer coach gone, pretty good Football coach leaving now, Hoops' all-time winningest coach lol (decent) replaced by an apparent DEI hire, and of course Hockey extending a mediocre-to-date HC.

Agreed that Kelly isn't coming back ... thought I said that somewhere, him being in a different universe, only thing that might make sense would be a retirement job type of situation, but knowing a couple of folks close to the source here, the chances of that happening here are probably less than 5%. Day isn't even on the radar.
First of all, apologies for being gauche and quoting my own prior post. But in this situation, context is important, when some (not all) folks are taking liberties with my content. I know this is all makes for super-fascinating reading while hockey season is on pause ... but as anyone still interested can see, we were discussing the debate over the recent UNH departure of Coach Santos (Football). The second paragraph - which I will loosely call the "offending paragraph" - caused this stir, and I get that it was probably careless to add DEI in the discussion of the AD's short-but-unimpressive tenure to date, and I've owned up to that.

As an aside, the previous paragraph invoked Title IX in discussing UNH programs that have disappeared, and nobody had a conniption over that. Interesting.

Anyway, I want to respond to the two folks who had something to say, one of the two of whom did not take any liberties, but both actually offered content:

i was talking basic PR, but in the end im pretty sure it was just a good hire. is the presence of recycling cans on campus suddenly greenwashing?

by this logic, you could declare the hiring of any minority figure to be signs of obvious virtue signaling. id hope i dont have to explain why that is a terrible precedent to set, but you appear to have a tough time with the definition of "concluding" (it means AT THE END, not the middle of a wall of text) so i'll oblige: this discredits the entire careers of very hardworking and competent members of society who have contributed so much by minimizing their presence into a statistic for some culture war.

IN CONCLUSION, no one is claiming the scary monster DEI policy wasn't present. it is merely that most people have enough sense to focus on the whole picture, not the one speck in the corner of the photograph because it offends their sensibilities.
cinnamoroll, I left your entire post up so no one would say I just picked certain parts of it and discarded the rest. I only added the bold section in Line One to point out that even you, in disagreeing with my take overall, have conceded ("pretty sure") like me it was probably a good hire. Neither you nor I, nor anyone else not directly in the UNH process at the time, can speak in definite terms. And his career is still in process. Your second paragraph offers a helpful mix of construct suggestions lol, and fairly points out what can happen when one gets careless with words/terms. Your conclusion line is an absolutely fair take, although I've made my own suggestion for an edit, since I think it's a little over the top, given what was and wasn't said earlier. So kudos, sir - 8 out of 10.

Now on to Sparkee, who has definitely upped his game on here in the last couple of months, but in this post fell victim to going a little over the top and taking things entirely out of initial context. Even cinnamaroll won't go to "definite", because he is apparently a little more balanced and tempered, and you may still be susceptible to the emotions of the past wars on here, I guess? You packed a lot of imagination and invention into my original sentence fragment there. Your responses on this little exchange over the last few days are more akin to what I'd expect from a teenager triggered by a microaggression. You are way better than that. However, I'll admit that with this response, it's time to put aside the shovel. For that decent piece of advice, I'll generously give you 6 out of 10.

And as for you, mister potty ... zero point zero. Absolutely no content to offer, nothing but a tone-deaf one-trick pony. Maybe you should take your own advice and am-scray?!? Or start unmasking your DM hostages to show how deep your apparently invisible "support" on here actually is????? 😂 😂 😂

Ok, fair enough.

But now we have a different problem. We won’t have a carcass to pick at during the winter break.

PS. Cinnamaroll is female, she is excellent on recruiting info specifically from CHL leagues. Seems to be more of a fan of any program with San Jose Sharks draft picks. Despite this I’ve been trying to convince her to become a Maine fan. The more you can give her a bad time the easier my sell job gets. For Cinnamaroll, save yourself a lot of pain and choose Maine. UNH fans can’t even handle copying Maine’s “naked 5” traditional where we have a local frat go shirtless and spell MAINE, then they run around the rink after goals. UNH tried to mock us and we have a photo of them spelling it UHN, even though it is tremendously hard to get just 3 letters out of order if you are attempting to not get it wrong. If you choose UNH in this rivalry you will be surrounded by this type of people and several types like Chuck. It is more entertaining to be on the Maine side of this rivalry! 🤣

Good for Alex!

Meanwhile, Angus Crookshank, with 29 NHL games played, has leapfrogged Darren Haydar (23), Paul Thompson (24), and Cap Raeder (28) into a tie with Gordie Clark in total NHL/WHA games played for 34th place in UNH alums. Next up are Chris Winnes in 33rd place with 33 NHL games played, Guy Smith in 32nd place with 38 WHA games played, and Mike Sislo in 31st place with 42 NHL games played.

And, another meanwhile, JvR and TvR both playing in Dead Wings - Capitols rematch this afternoon. 🙂

Not gonna be the Dead Wings much longer, Snives ... leading the Atlantic outright, and 2nd in the East only behind Carolina, after a sweep of DC Caps this weekend. HC Todd MacLellan has now been in charge for a little over a full season, and in 85 games, the Wings have amassed 101 points, with what is still a very young team. And as a result of the Yzerman Era drafts, the talent is now bubbling up to the big club and maturing ... and all the while, their AHL team in Grand Rapids is a stunning 25-1-0-1 for 51 points in 54 games, sitting on the next wave of upcoming prospects. Trey Augustine is arguably the best goalie in D-1. It's still all very tight in the East, and a few poorly-timed injuries can doom any team, but (fingers crossed) there should be postseason hockey at Little Caesar's this Spring. (y)

Looks like a kid loaded with intangibles, solid build already and probably still growing, should fit in nicely with the new look 'Cats in a year or two. Good get (by Stewie?), hopefully a sign that there is a new strategy in place in Durham, and UNH perhaps are being seen a little differently out there in recruiting land?

Ha, ha, and the No Longer Dead Wings were a more fun team to watch the last two games on the NHL channel than were the Bruins on NESN. Agree that the No Longer Dead wings are “still very young team,” except for “Old Man” Van Riemsdyk.

As for UNH, did we beat Trey Augustine in the first game against Michigan State, or did the Spartans play their #2 goaltender in that game?

We did, in fact, beat Augustine.

We can call 'em Dead Wings until they crack the playoffs, and they haven't done it yet. But a lot of the traditional Eastern powers are starting to sag, so there is an opportunity to make some significant headway, and they could be set up for a long run. When Werenski finally arrives from CBJ, I'll know for sure it's "on".

The best money I spend on sports in recent years is getting the DRW TV feed, with Ken Daniels, Larry Murphy, Trevor Thompson, Chris Osgood, and the one & only Mickey Redmond, still at it after all these years. Yesterday's pregame festivities at the arena (it's DRW's 100th anniversary year) were focused on captains of the 1970's "Dead Wings" era, including Redmond, Nick Libbett, Dennis Hextall, Paul Woods, and none other than Gordon "Red" Berenson, who got to drop the puck on yesterday's ceremonial opening faceoff. Mickey says Red still plays pick-up hockey and also with the DRW alum team, in his mid-'80's. Of course, Red was in his coaching prime at Michigan in the late '90's when UM drubbed UNH in the '98 FF semis (Boston) and then lost to UNH in the '99 Regional finals (Woostah) to a Haydar OT goal. Great memories, all.

UNH did indeed beat Augustine. UNH has beaten a lot of very good teams, and it's only December. Hope UNH can keep it up into early '26.

Great memories of Berenson’s Wolverines and Umile’s Wildcats competing for the most consecutive years in the NCAA’s (I forget the numbers, but both teams in the teens, I think?).

Remember when- Hall of famer Bobby Miller donned the Blue and white. He will be missed but not forgotten and died too soon. Who knew he averaged 2.27 pts per game with UNH, played in the Olympics in 76, was an all American in 77 and Played 7 years in the NHL (4 with the bruins). Did you know he was part of the famous "shoe brawl"? #14 and his famous hair climbing into the stands is classic :)

I'm pretty sure Miller still holds the UNH single season scoring record. IIRC he was also entwined in the Game 7 "too many men on the ice" snafu vs. the Habs in the Stanley Cup semifinals in the late '70's. The Pride of Billerica MA, probably their most famous athlete until Tommy Glavine emerged in the '90's. RIP.

Good recall, Chuck. Bobby Miller is UNH all-time, single-season assists and points leader with 59 and 89 in 1976/77, with many of those assists likely going to Ralph Cox (the last player dropped from the 1980 Olympic team) who tallied 40 goals that season, second only to his 44 in 1978/79. Miller’s two seasons at UNH were separated by a year away on the 1976 U.S. Olympic team. His 404 NHL games played ranks him at 12th for UNH alums. Those 1970s UNH teams were awesome, like the late 1990s/early 2000s teams. For example, the 1973/74 team with Gordie Clark, Jaime Hislop, and Cliff Cox on the first line (scored 73 goals in 31 games!) for whom our poster C-H-C takes his screen name.
