Not sure who ever said Hemmingway, JVR, Pots, or Gildon were bad teammates. I have only said it once about Conmy which was told to me. There has been criticism of poor play but that it is not indicative or a synonym for bad teammate.
Let me step in here and offer some insight, balance and background ... Dan has a long-standing criticism of UNH fans who have "eaten our own" and started at the top of the food chain, by UNH posters targeting some of our best players historically. I'm not sure if those criticisms were for off-ice issues, or just whether they were playing up to expectations? And to a large degree, Dan has made a fair point here. If I'm being honest, I think there have been times that I've fallen into that same trap, although strictly for on-ice issues, simply because (with a slight exception for JvR) I never had the off-ice insight to go in that direction.
As to "Hemingway" ... I believe that's probably a reference to the younger (Brett) Hemingway, who came to the program shortly after his older brother Colin had starred for UNH during the tail end of the Golden Era (1998-2003) as Lanny Gare's linemate. Brett had a lot to live up to, following his brother's skates, and he was a decent player, but never quite as good as Colin was (FWIW I did meet CH a few times, great kid ... never met BH). IIRC Brett missed a tourney game once due to some vague illness, and there was rampant speculation about the nature of that "illness". Don't remember the details frankly, but it was message board fodder, and nothing definitive ever emerged. If it's another "Hemingway" reference, Dan can clear that up if I'm off base.
Personally, I had my fair share of critical remarks aimed at both JvR and Poturalski during their time in Durham. Nothing off the ice, and while I did have some credible inside info on JvR due to folks who were in school with him at the time, all reports were that he was (and I'm sure still is) a solid citizen who kept his nose clean, and was well liked by his teammates. I always felt he never fully applied himself to an all-around 200 foot game at UNH, and I'll stand by that. Maybe his #2 overall draft position gave a misleading read on expectations, in retrospect? A #2 overall pick at UNH was a novelty (still is), so some of that is on me. That he turned out to be an above-average NHL'er who never quite became an elite pro (no All-Star, no big world tourneys, no Cups, no captain lettering) to a degree arguably affirmed part of my analysis, but looking back, he was not a guy who prevented UNH from gaining greater glory.
I don't remember being particularly harsh on Poturalski until what turned out to be late in his UNH career, again nothing personal, but there were huge gaps in his game, and on what turned out to be the final weekend of his UNH career, I watched him in person at Merrimack just crumple when the team needed him to be at his all-around best. He was off to the pros shortly thereafter, and I was chafed at him leaving after only two seasons, and said so, all while airing him out for some of the stuff I was observing. While AP's issues were similar to JvR's, he didn't have the same raw talent to cover for those shortcomings, and (sadly) the rest is history, with him having a fantastic Haydar-like AHL career, but also having a minimal Haydar-like NHL career. FWIW, Poturalski's linemate was the undersized Tyler Kelleher, who was the most electric UNH player in the last decade-plus. He had issues too - mostly with his size, so not something he could correct - but I don't think he ever lacked for effort in trying to play and develop a 200 foot game. So in my mind, AP disappointed by comparison.
Gildon is a really good point by Dan, and I can vividly remember being somewhat critical of his judgment as a frosh defender, which cost UNH a game or two early in his career. Dan got into me (and others) for that criticism, and even back then, it caused me to pause and reassess. Gildon had fallen to UNH when Wisconsin (?) had cut him loose from his commitment, and he was a great early get for MS7. He was consistently the best player, by a large margin, on some really poor UNH teams, and he spent three years at UNH getting better, working on his craft, and keeping his nose clean. I never criticized him again, unless there was something obvious and/or catastrophic, and I don't know if that ever happened in his last 2.5 seasons in Durham??
So I think that puts some meat on the bones as far as where Dan's comments were directed at. The Gildon thing absolutely changed my approach. And if I still have less-than-complimentary postings on JvR (i.e. never quite lived up to the hype, here and after) or Poturalski (the penny never seemed to drop in hiis mind as to why he wasn't making the final big jump to the NHL), I'll stand behind those positions. Never said either guy was a bad guy, or unpopular in the room ...
If we are only allowed (waiting for Corky's rules that Chuck asked for) to talk about unicorns and roses, then why even bother with a message board.
Interesting that we haven't heard from Mr(s?). Personality since I made what seemed like a rational/reasonable request for him to clarify his "rules"
