UNH Hockey 2023-2024 Season Thread - End Of The Cellar-Dweller Era??

... and therein lies the quandary that UNH fans find ourselves in these days. You always - always - want to see your team doing well, and even when you're convinced the guy in charge is not up to the task, you hope against hope that his players will somehow overcome his shortcomings. Or you hope that he learns on the job, and somehow turns those hard-knock early experiences into success later in his tenure (UNH Football HC Sean MacDonnell did this).

Souza has been stubborn in not changing his approach, and he's been FAR too willing to accept excuse-making to justify his program's chronic mediocrity. Being a D-1 head coach is a demanding job, no doubt. It's why they generally get paid more than most of the slobs like us who go to their games, and debate stuff on this message board. There's no doubt a smidge of politics involved, certainly more so than in a professional organization, where wins and losses are the measuring stick (unless you're in the minors, where player development probably trumps wins), so if you've got the gift of gab and self-promotion, maybe you can cover over a relatively poor W-L record for awhile IF you're doing everything else right (player graduation, generating donations from alums, etc.). If the recent largesse from Key Auto/DiLorenzo is tied in the slightest to MS7 - and I don't know that it is, but let's say it is - for better or worse, you know that's gonna buy MS7 some extra time and leniency. At least until that largesse has been applied to the program and expended. It may be "education" but it's also a (very big) business.

But at the end of the day, if you're a D-1 head coach of a program that's experienced consistent success under your predecessors, you can't expect to keep your job if the best you can do is produce mediocre results. So unless there are some major intangibles involved (as hinted at above), it's gonna take more than just a .500 season or a (barely) winning record to keep his job. And wins in October aren't even close to the value of wins in March. There's a lot of road left to travel this season, so just be a fan, enjoy the wins, and the rest will take care of itself ...

Definitely will do! Been down this path as a fan in many other sports, especially my 49ers back in the abyss after Young & Garcia. Told my wife, this team is like the Cubs were before 16 & Red Sox in 04 to their fans for me as a fan even though I'm pretty young & probably a "newer" fan than most here. 2002 season I slowly started following & 2003 I was hooked for good at 12 going on 13 years old. I'll be 33 in December lol!

Have heard that MS7 has brought in 3 donors for the project (rumor mill)...so Chuck you have a point about how that could influences 'things' down the pike. I don't really care about any of that to be honest I just want the team to do as well as they can- this upcoming weekend is huge if you ask me.

Fun to see 'everything college hockey' which, isn't 'USCHO' polling give UNH a 19th spot/ranking albeit way to small a sample size. I am curious tho,
how does BU get a first place vote (USCHO) even after their, shall we say, less than stellar beginning? (on any give day BU beats UNH I get that)

And, just like how many donors a coach can bring should influence whether they stay or go, polls don't mean much either!?! We'll see...

If your rumor pans out to be true maybe MS7 can get a job at the UNH Foundation. They currently have an opening for a fundraising Development Associate, sounds like this might play to his strengths, more than his current gig anyway.

Fair point, and one worthy of serious consideration if things fall the right way. I have no idea whether DiLorenzo (Key Auto) might be one of the donors tied to MS7, but if he is, then he's worth watching as he's apparently settling down in Portsmouth, and might be focusing more on legacy issues at this point in his life. A few million for his private residence on Belle Isle, then $4.0MM on the Key Auto Group Complex (or whatever?) at The Whitt, and I believe $9.0MM on his high bid for the McIntyre federal property smack-dab in the heart of Downtown Portsmouth, sounds like a man on a mission? I visited downtown with my better half this weekend, and it's crazy the amount of development that's going on still in that area, even with the economy in a not-so-good place. Joe Faro (Tuscan), whom we discussed on here during the summer, has expanded his own footprint right around the corner. And they're far from alone, but those are two UNH guys with big dreams and big money, and a guy like Souza could literally make them his full-time job. The amount of capital pouring into Portsmouth over the last generation or so is stunning, and with the State U literally 10 minutes away (plus public transportation for others of lesser means), there is ample opportunity to "do business" on a scale that would probably be unparalleled in the recent history of our state.

I took a look at the McIntyre property during our stroll around town - one of the adjoining properties is owned/occupied by Bill Binnie, who is another deep pocketed guy who was in the bidding for McIntyre until he backed off at the end. DiLorenzo has been pretty vague about his plans for the property, but with Portsmouth not being short of small artsy venues, and with DiLorenzo's more sports-related giving history at UNH, it's hard not to think of a slightly smaller SNHU Arena fitting comfortably on that site, geared more towards Hoops and bigger arts performances than the Music Hall or other area venues can currently handle.

Hard to believe there are that many two acre parcels in the state where spending $9.0MM to buy it and the existing structures on it would see the structures demolished, and then turn a profit on the subsequent development ... but this might be one of those few opportunities? The City literally tried for decades to buy the property for $1 from the GSA, but the hitch was that the Feds insisted on preservation of the structures (one of which houses a post office branch), and I doubt DiLorenzo has any affection and/or use for an outdated mid-20th century relic as part of his plans. This will no doubt once again become a political football - FWIW Redgate/Kane (which I believe features Ralph Cox of UNH Hockey fame) were the last developers to take a swing at this project, and that ended up in litigation. Someone at some point - whether it's DiLorenzo or one of his development partners - is gonna have to "sell" his plans to the community to some degree in order to get the City to issue the permitting to make this into what he wants to make it into. One of the things he did say after he was disclosed as high bidder was that he didn't want to watch another developer working on that property. So it sounds pretty personal to him. It'll be interesting to eventually see what his plans are.

In the meantime ... back to UNH Hockey, and the upcoming visit of the defending national champs. What do folks expect when the D-1 champs face off (twice) against the daunting force of the "Champions of October"? Will any enterprising USCHO poster(s) hang out the welcome mat for Quinnipiac assistant coach Joe Dumais?? I think that should happen ...

I’d be very surprised if an arena was built. To me it seems like arenas in this area don’t have much going on other than the garden. Verizon/snhu isn’t used much anymore is it?

...If the 'Cats can split this up coming weekend, I will be more than thrilled and will make Frozen Four travel plans haha. Realistically? I'm hoping we see some
good stuff from them; it will be a huge test for the youngins who showed they could hold their own regardless of the BU hype coming their way. If we get
swept it won't be that much of a surprise but I'm cautiously optimistic we have something to be happy about come Sunday morning...

Ryan Comny...is he the next TyK playmaker??? 3 assists on the night.

No comment for a welcome mat for Dumais. I do not wish to get that engaged this early in the game...that said I'd put out a red carpet for the big
kahuna Pecknold.

Ps here's hoping the lines stay the same as last weekend; seemed like there was some chemistry there...

A nice and unexpected start to the season for the Cats. Must give credit where credit is due. The PLAYERS came out and took advantage of their chances and were also playing with some grit. Cant remember a lot of times recently where UNH had someone parked in front of the goalie (Devlin??) on power plays to disrupt the vision, but this lead to a few of the goals and a bunch of chances.

BU clearly has so much more skill than UNH, but on Friday, this didnt matter. I cant say it was because of a superior gameplan that UNH pulled it out, but they made it happen. There in lies the story for UNH moving forward - who on the current staff is capable of selling AND closing just a few of those players?

The dichotomy of the fandom - packed on the ends, sparse on the sides. If they can keep the students involved, this would go a long way to setting the tone.

This is true. SNHU Arena is probably dark over 90% of its potential dates, ever since the goon league version of the Monarchs left town. The heavy concentration of the arts would be different in Portsmouth, as would the proximity of UNH, but there would have to be long-standing commitments from the G-League, WNBA and/or UNH Hoops to make it a viable hoops/arts center (admittedly unlikely, but ... ). And G-League would likely come at Portland's expense, and I don't think the Celts have any urgency to relocate their entry. Portsmouth does inhabit a sweet spot where treks to Boston and Portland are about an hour away, and even Manchester isn't much closer. Find the right niche (or combination of niches), and lots could yet happen? But I'm not holding my breath, either.

P.S. to Jack from Dover: We all miss Bobo. I suspect he visits us from time to time, when the opportunity allows ...

I was super impressed with the student section turnout and noise all game. Even with the late start, it looked like almost nobody left early to start partying and were awesome all night.

Anyone here expect that might happen before the season began?

Snivley, while I didn’t go so far as predicating HE PoW, I did have him as the second line center along with Sardarian and Cafarelli. Also had that line scoring 22 goals. I also noted that he was “a grinder who can score.”
His freshman year was cut short, by an injury? I would guess. But scoring 4 goals in 20 games while mostly on the fourth line shows something. He was also very effective on special teams this weekend.

BU doesn't look so good this week as compared to last week at this time. Is that UNH win so impressive now as compared to last Friday at 11 pm?

Moral of the story? Beware the second half of an early-season back-to-back schedule. Yikes!!!

The US kids probably went drinking with the BU kids after Saturday night's game, no way to explain Sunday otherwise ...

Alternate Explanation: BU is about to have an unexpected REALLY bad year, or at least start of the year. One where the whole is much much less than the sum of the parts.

BU - 3 poor showings so far squeak past Bentley (who was thumped by Northeastern), and drop games to UNH and the USNTP

Winters moved up to centering the third and sometimes second line after the first five games last season, which ended for him when he got injured in the Sacred Heart win, which was followed by our Cats 6-2-1 February run. Carafelli’s season ended about the same time, which is ironic as after losing those two the Cats began their win streak. In any case, will be great if our first-year players improve rather than regress during their sophomore and subsequent seasons.

BC used to do the same thing regularly early in the season, when Coach York was winning the big trophies.

BU kids adjusting to a new coach ... new coach adjusting to being a HC, where he was an assistant and player.

It's October. If BU has a poor season, hey, no worries here. FWIW I bet the USNTP played its B team vs. Dartmouth.
