UNH Hockey 2023-2024 Season Thread - End Of The Cellar-Dweller Era??

Interesting stats from this debacle er game...(pulled from CHN)

UNH outshot Army 45 to 14 (guess the Black Knights made them count)

Faceoffs: UNH 43 Army 25

PPG: UNH 2 Army 2

Blocked Shots: UNH 4 Army 26 (gulp)

I mean, I will give it to the 'Cats for their effort in trying to come back but when you go down 3 zip (unless you're BU or someone like that) it's an
uphill climb and UNH chased that game all night. Yeah just did not play well...I'd like to give their goal tender more credit but it wasn't like we made it
that tough for him most of the night.

Ho hum...

As we await this evening's resumption of Wildcat hockey at Army, perhaps some of you might have missed this bit of "College Hockey News" speculation as to who'll be selected for NC$$ Tournament play and where they might be slotted come late March:

https://www.collegehockeynews.com/ne...oint-Check.php

UNH is currently a solid 11th in the current PWR (2 more comparisons won than Western Michigan at #12), yet the author excludes them from his hypothetical National Tournament bracket, a telling commentary on how he expects the remainder of their season to unfold. He predicts all 4 teams ranked lower in spots 12-15 to continue playing well, perhaps moving up/down a bit, yet all qualifying for the Tournament, all that is but #11 UNH. Given how they've finished the last few years it's not a totally unrealistic projection, but boy - I hope this becomes Whitt locker room bulletin board material ...

Well something has to get this team back on some kind of track. Or...are we just not the team that can indeed make the run (hey, I'm talking Garden so everyone relax lol)??
I know this game tonight is not the be all end all...but what they do next is huge. And, if I'm driving almost to NYC tomorrow, I'm expecting a W ha!

As per the CHN speculation of how everyone else is going to do 'cept us that's not too surprising given the recent 'history'. I'm holding on to the idea despite my
whining tonight that this team has the ability but they can't play like this and if we are being 100% honest, even with Devlin out or in the line up, this is how we
have been playing since RIT.

As they often say this post will prob not age well, but, I'm trying.

Hadn't been to a UNH game in a long time but I had a sip of Kool Aid and the location was convenient. D-1 caliber goaltending and more disciplined play (fewer penalties) and UNH wins in a laugher. Army was just barely holding it together all game.

On the positive side, Tate Rink was sold out(!) and UNH fans traveled well.

I remember one of these "back from break" games probably 25 or so years ago, traveling to Dartmouth in a rare "whole family" hockey event (Mrs. WIS isn't a big hockey fan, but the kids talked her into it). Of course, Dartmouth won going away, and I believe it was Conklin who let in what was a pedestrian clear-in attempt in what is probably the most embarrassing goal allowed I can ever recall him giving up. Sounds like our boy Mucinex just had "one of those games" tonight? One would expect Hellsten to get the nod in the next game.

This is a UNH team that can't afford to give away winnable games like this. Maybe MS7 going to the media was bad karma ...

Pretty sure that is the game where Conklin was so disgusted with his performance that he walked back to the team hotel in the snow rather than taking the bus. Maybe Mucinex should have had to walk to Connecticut last night.

As far as most embarassing goal, gotta think this one bothers him more:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwlvOmIe3XE

UNH goalie stats:

Tyler Muszelik, So, 4-3-0, 3.44 gaa- 71st in Div 1, 0.869 sv% - 76th in Div 1

Jakob Hellsten, Sr, 4-2-1, 1.83 gaa -3rd in Div 1, 0.918 sv% - 15th in Div 1

And, for comparison with David Fessenden, Gr, now at Canisius: 3-7-3, 3.25 gaa - 64th in Div 1, 0.892 sv% - 70th

My take: Despite MS7 professing to the MSM (Al Pike) that he wants to remain HC at UNH beyond this season, he sure had a bizarre approach to that desire in his goalie choice last night at Army. I realize that the five goals (2 PPGs) that Muszelik gave up last night hurt his stats noted above, but his stats were only marginally better before the game, although I am too lazy to back-calculate. Last season, MS7 was stuck with two mediocre goalies, but this season MS7 seems to have lucked his way into a competent goalie in Hellsten via the Portal. I suspect that Hellsten would not have given up those two even-strength goals on six shots in the first period last night, if not stopping the PPG early in the second that followed over a minute of 5 on 3 PK. Take away those two goals in the first by Army, and UNH heads into the third tied 2-2 rather than down 4-2.

I don’t think there is a track to get onto. Let’s look back the last 2 months. Barely survived and got a win at RIT with a magical play in game #2.

Trip to Alfond where they got man handled in a poor display of effort. Beat RPI 1-0, which was a team that is currently 54th. This isn’t a blip it is a team playing as expected.

If we lose tonight at Sacred Heart and then split with Princeton, we will be 9-7-1 to end the first half.

Then, if we go 8-9-0 in our remaining 17 HEA games, we will be 17-16-1 going into the MBPBEGAM game, which we might get to play at home against Yukon, UVM, Mac, UML, or NU (all bad teams so far). Win the MBPBEGAM game, and then lose the next two in the first HEA round, MS7 finishes the season at 18-8-1, his second non-losing record since becoming HC. Good enough for a contract extension? I hope not.

On the other hand, if MS7 stops shooting himself in the foot and plays Hellsten in net the rest of the way, the Cats just might end the regular season with a winning record, even if they still miss Boston and the NCAA’s. Good enough for a contract extension? I hope not.

Snives, I gotta reluctantly agree with you, MS7 is on the way to squandering their far-better-than-anyone-imagined start to the season, and if we are heading down the .500 track with a "good" MS7 team - plus an early out in the conference tourney - there's really no stress built into making that a tough decision for the AD. MS7 makes Bill Herrion look like freakin' Red Auerbach by comparison. I hope Souza's "charm offensive" isn't going to his head, and he's actually thinking AD Rich is falling for it hook, line and sinker.

There's some weird parallel if MS7's BS brigade jumps the shark at Bobby V's new arena. Talk about kindred spirits ...

Interesting lineup changes tonight. Let’s see if it brings a spark or more of the same.

this needs to be a 5-1/6-2 type of win to bring some life back. Though Sacred Heart beat Army 6-1 so let’s see how that fairs

well so far going as planned ; -)

Checking in from the palace that is Martire Family Arena.
Very impressive! Cool donut concession which is a plus :-)

Nice to see the 'Cats playing so much better tonight. Like
Norbert said Siedem and Turner are out there. D much better coordinated.

Doing the stuff they are capable of...Prob the message was a full 60 lets see how the third goes.

Norbert impressively nails the 6-2 result. Not an easy pick by any means.

I see Princeton beat Harvard tonight, so no excuses not to have the boys ready next weekend.

Say whatever he will in public, but MS7 has to know now who his best goalie is, especially if he wants to keep his job ...

Maine #1 in the PairWise and UNH #13. It will be fun if UNH can give them a little humble pie when they come to Durham.

Revenge is a dish best served cold bwahahaha!
I'd be happy with splitting that humble pie! Nice to see
HE representing in the PWR...

Surprised to see UNH sitting at 13 in the Pairwise considering the Army loss. Would have thought it would have more of an impact? On another note, B’s off to a good start against the Wings.

Was thinking the same..wonder how they will do in this week's poll. Obviously PWR is king! No doubt the 'Cats came to play last night cant remeber when we had a 4.goal period.

Let's see what they do this weekend v Princeton.
