UNH Hockey 2023-2024 Season Thread - End Of The Cellar-Dweller Era??

Coach Weinrebe was probably the safe and predictable option, and comes from the same Seacoast United coaching tree that's given us Coaches Noonan (Clemson) and Hubbard (UNH). A little underwhelming if I'm being honest, but I wouldn't hold the Northeastern thing against him, and that's been a program that's struggled in the past, but Weinrebe was apparently bringing in some of his own younger guys, and they might just follow him to Durham? He goes back with Hubbard all the way to SNHU, and looks to have gotten back to UNH a year or two before Hubbard, as it looks like he was a holdover from Coach Thompson's staff when Hubbard became HC.

If UNH was gonna poach a young up-and-comer, the Resendes kid at Bryant probably would have been my first choice, as he's done more with less in a shorter time, at a comparable Men's Soccer wasteland to NU. Plus he had most of the same shared Hubbard lineage. NU also had quite a widespread recruiting footprint - arguably even more so than UNH - so the transition into a very familiar program should be a pretty easy task.

Whether he has the same tactical nous, and can at least maintain UNH's current standing as an AE powerhouse and annual factor in the NCAA's, remains to be seen. It'll be interesting to see how UNH does in Hubbard's aftermath, and also monitor how things are going at NC State, Bryant and Northeastern. Just have this gut feeling that Resendes is "the guy", and it's too bad Hubbard's decision didn't come only a year into Resendes' stay at Bryant ... time will tell.

New soccer coach was w/ Hubbard for most of the build at UNH, but was just 10-16-9 in two seasons at Northeastern.

I learned from the press release that Bob Kullen - of all people - coached the men's soccer program from 1978-82...

In looking for the UNH soccer Head coaching history, I found a site that also lists the highest scorer each year and learned that a kid with whom I played Little League baseball one summer in Durham led the UNH soccer team his first three years, 1970-1972 (also a member of the UNH Sports HOF). He and his father, an EE professor at UNH, shared the same name, Joe Murdoch. By the time Joey began playing soccer at Oyster River High School (ORHS), I had moved on to help build a fledgling ski team my senior year. To get this post back on the hockey track, I have posted in the past that at least two ORHS grads played hockey at UNH, Dave Savage and Bob Grant (early 1970s).

One other little tidbit - Princeton leads the nation in the power play, currently scoring at 31.58%. The 'Cats would do well to try and stay out of the box this weekend.

Indeed, the Tigers did score two PPG’s on Friday night. Good call, Scott.

Their special teams did the job as far as keeping the 'Cats off the board for PPgoals as well as scoring twice on their two PP's. Despite the score thought Princeton
was a fast team that did alot of things right. Kudos to the 3rd period heroics of Lavins (?) with those 3 blocked shots.

Let's go 'Cats get the sweep!

What's up with this?!? Princeton Hockey jerseys on display last night, setting back D-1 hockey unis by 100 years??

crop

Don’t disagree, I kinda like them too! Our unis not some much, the UNH font looks dated, time for a complete overhaul. Why not a sweater with a diagonal WILDCATS on the front? Time for something new.

No, no, nooo! Don’t change horses in the middle of the stream. Ditto for goaltenders! :-)

And let's not forget that more recently another ORHS grad = Sean Leahy captained the UNH Club Hockey team to the DivII (yes, they're DivII along with BU, BC, etc. despite UNH officially being an NC$$ DivI program) ACHA Championship in 2014, a well-deserved bright spot re: UNH hockey coinciding with Umile's last winning season before the long decline chasing the NRN. Not only that, he was also named the 2013-14 ACHA DivII Player of the Year, the Club Hockey equivalent to the Hobey, a real feather in his/UNH's cap. We fans can be justifiably proud of Jason Krog winning the Hobey Baker Award in 1999, but don't spare the pride for Sean's accomplishment too, a home grown kid who helped elevate Durham and UNH hockey to heights not reached before or since ...

Thanks for your his excellent post on ORHS grad Sean Leahy’s, jeteye. I think that Sean should be voted into the UNH Sports HOF, too. Appears to take 10-30 years for that to happen, so plenty of time.

There are countless things to talk/argue about, but not the uniforms. That is a loser for 8 out of 10 of us.

Really? Talking about uniforms is off limits? Just falls under the “fun /light hearted” category to me. So sorry to bring up such a taboo subject. We can rehash the fire MS7 topic for the 187th time if you’d rather. Regardless, I personally liked the old larger UNH font, not the new “modern” font, it kinda sucks.

UNH best start since 2012-2013 season when Cats began 11-3-2, then went 9-9-5 over the next 23 games, including losing 2 of 3 at Schneider in HEA first round and beating DU 5-2 before losing to UML 2-0 at NE regionals in Manchvegas, finishing season with a record of 20-12-7. CdS in net for nearly every game that season, posting a 19-10-7 record, and 2.39 GAA and 0.922 SV%. Cats had five double-digit goal scorers that season, including Goumas, Downing, Henrion, Block, and Knodel, along with 9 from Speelman and 8 each from Willows and TvR, with a total of 122 goals for the season.

We will see how this season’s team compares over the second half. Yes, “why not us?”

Solid weekend. ’cats are pretty well positioned going into conference play after winning three straight by a combined 14-5. Pity there wasn’t one more win (RIT, UMO, Army) in there, but hard to complain given recent history.

Totally agree; Princeton battled them relentlessly but they played well-was nice to see that our PK was to the task for 2 out of their 3 PP's (that PP tho...Ovechkin shot ya'll..)

Went to the after the game STH event the guys are pumped up and know what's in front of them. I think the best part was when little girl asked where
Hellsten was...he sent a stick out to her. Mostly talked about what's made the difference for them this season and I think the basic idea of "buying in" was
the main theme of their responses. I think Alex Gagne is an excellent Captain and a great example of a NH kid who loved watching the 'Cats since he was 8
and knew where he wanted to land...Ok, enough of the sentiments but this stuff is good to see.

They know the challenge ahead I think it's going to be very exciting! Will be at BU in 105 and also am going to the Yukon away game (snagged a tix from
someone who could not go). So I'll take the 11th in PWR (very cool) and be happy. Be safe in the storm and let's go 'Cats!

Ps...am all for a uni change, and, considering my last memory of the Tigers in Belfast, I must say the new unis kind of grew on me ha!

Ah my inaugural season as a Wildcat fan (albeit, late in that season). I (cue the nostalgia music) think of that time quite a bit actually. Still wonder...could we have
defeated UML if Goumas and Downing were in the lineup? Or was Connor Hellebuyck just too hard to solve? Looking back UNH had their handsful with UML that
season.

As was pointed out to me today there are 51 HE points to be had..how many will we get and how far with they take us? Yeah...why not us?
