UNH Hockey 2023-2024 Season Thread - End Of The Cellar-Dweller Era??

Complete meltdown in progress. This really demonstrates how long it’s been since UNH has played in a “big” game (yes, I categorize this as a big game), and how much they need to learn about competing in them. First real punch in the face of the season, be interesting to see how they respond.

Perhaps they should stay out of the box.

Now there's an idea!!! This has been an issue all season and our pk has been stellar but not tonight. You can't expect to win most games (I don't care who you are playing) with 7 trips to the box.

Those Nadeau boys...wow. Not every day your own brother assists all 3 of your hat trick goals. Welp this is something to really learn from like d.gerry says.

I think that Conmy is the second since Haydar worthy to be a first year player on the first line (the other was LeClerk last season).

Mr. Snively, I’m surprised at you. You seem to have forgotten a kid they put on Haydar’s line when his senior year rolled around. That kid was Hockey East ROTY.

Yes, Saviano-Collins-Haydar the first line in 2001-2002, with Abbott-Gare-Hemingway the second line. “I would rather be stabbed in Lowell than [mauled by] a black bear in Maine.”

ditto, JvR-Radja-Fornataro the first line in 2007-2008, with various combinations of Dries, Pollastrone, Butler, DeSimone, LeBlanc, Fortney, Sislo, Thompson, and Greg Collins making up the other three lines. That team was so deep that I bought my NCAA and airline tickets early for the FF in Denver thinking that we certainly would be there. Sigh.

Totally agree ... but it'll be some time before there's another "big game" on the schedule, so the boys and their coaches will have a fair amount of time to deal with the result, come to terms with what was lacking, what adjustments need to be made etc., and then put that stuff into play.

There was some speculation after the exhibition game why UMaine seemed to put more emphasis on getting the W than UNH, as reflected by UMaine's starting goalie Ostman playing the whole game, while Souza split duties between his two guys. Ironically, I see that UMaine played their back-up tonight - no idea if there was an injury/illness involved, or just Barr pulling a surprising switch - but after UNH snagged a pair of wins* late last Winter at home, UMaine has at least now laid down a marker that this year, at least on their ice, they've held serve. Whether that will carry over to doing something later in the season at The Whitt remains to be seen, but this year's UMaine team has no reason to think they can't do the trick. And that amps up the pressure on MS7 to not only return to "Champs of November" form for the last few non-league games on either side of the break, but to make sure his guys are ready to return the favor once UMaine rolls into Durham.

Just like Walshy established an early edge in his games against Umile, and pretty much never let it go (save perhaps for the original "White Out The Whitt" weekend) ... Barr will want to do the same against Souza. Especially if it turns out that Souza somehow turns the ship around from his current predicament and is around for awhile. Likewise, Souza HAS to know that he cannot let his career be defined by the same issues his predecessor encountered. Unless he can establish UNH's ability to go toe-to-toe with UMaine on something approaching level terms (and ideally even better) ... what was the reason he was hired to begin with?? If he's here for another generation of UNH being the plucky underdog and/or lovable losers they were when they peaked in the Umile Era ... is that all we wanted from Umile's successor? I hope AD Rich is aware of this, and weighs this properly when making her next big decision.

It's early in the game - both in the little picture and big picture - to be coming to any definitive conclusions yet. But if, like me (being "all in" as declared less than a week ago) you were looking for reassurances that UNH was not going to be "same ol' UNH" ... tonight was disappointing, and does nothing to dispel my previous thought that UNH should have moved for Coach Barr when they had the chance to do so. And if over the next few months, it turns out UNH's short-term answer to Barr can't answer back, then why tolerate a slightly higher level of mediocrity in place of potential excellence when it comes to who leads UNH into the long term?

That was gonna be the team to take the big-game stank off Coach Umile ... instead it pretty much baked it in, and the first guy on your list was not exactly the transcendent Vanek or Eichel-type character he needed to be to lead that team through the postseason, setting the tone for his underwhelming level of team success to date at the next level. It's funny, you can look at it two ways ... one, knowing where all these players eventually went after leaving UNH, you can admire Coach Umile for taking a team with one-and-a-half legitimate NHL players as far as he did ... or you can wonder if those guys could have made more of their pro careers if they had different tutelage than Coach Umile and his staff?

You look at D-1 champions from Union, where they also had pretty much one-and-a-half future NHL'ers ... or Yale, who had pretty much no one who established at that level ... or Providence, who (while lucky beyond belief) were more talented than these other two. UMass won after Cale Makar was long gone, and they may track closer to Yale and Union. So winning a D-1 title without a pile of future NHL'ers isn't unprecedented, and (sadly) doesn't exonerate Coach Umile. I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but I also don't think that stockpiling future talent guarantees your program the ultimate in D-1 success. Instruction, messaging, development, AND in-game coaching all play their parts too. JMHO.

Blind post as I have not read anything due to depression The team that played tonight is what I expected. Chasing the puck and unorganized The PP was criminal. More penalties. 3 goals within 2 minutes of each period sunk them.

Maybe there is a rebound but I’m taking Chucks outside spot. Huard gave up basic breakaways on 2 first period power plays He should sit with Fitzy

Certainly not as long as Maine has played in a “big” game. It’s one game early in the season.

You know things aren’t going your way when the refs wave off a perfectly good goal.
As I said a couple of days ago a win up there might be a bridge too far. I don’t put a lot of stock in an early season loss up in Orono. It will be a different story when Maine comes to Durham in February.

I didn't notice but one Maine writer said Souza didn't shake Barrs hand after game. Whats up with that

Cue Mookie …

....could it be that UNH is backsliding...I mean 3 games now where against stiff competition and look at the results. Could it be...that nothings changed afterall??? Seems we.cant make adjustments to pressure (our Achilles heel if you ask me)

Serious question...sure we didnt play well last night on many fronts but it looked eerily familiar to what I said about doing well in early season games then BAM...

Oh heck this is just a knee jerk reaction but that game plan or whatever it was concerns me that the ridged style of play I thought they had perhaps shook off has been reinstated? Please tell me I'm wrong...

I can't get the Jaws theme out of my head this morning...

If you asked me two weeks ago about going 0-2-1 in the next three games? Fail. If you asked me yesterday about going 0-2-1 given how we played last week and if we represented in Orono? Pass. Going 0-2-1 given last night’s performance? Epic fail. Giving up the late first, early second period goals? Brutal. Giving up five before answering? Horrible. The timing and nature of the penalties? Terrible. ’cats might as well have gone full turtle, surrendered two more making it 7-2 for old time’s sake. Painfully disappointing to watch.

Putting it in context, it is never easy to win in Orono especially when Maine has lost two in a row. We are tied for third and league standings are tight other than BU. NU beat BC at Conte last night so pretty much anything including playing in the Garden and the NCAAs is still possible. RIT slapped UNH in the face and UNH responded fairly well. Maine punched them in the mouth and they did not. Some get hit and decide they don’t like it. Others figure it wasn’t that bad and they can react better next time. I’ve exited the all in camp and am back with the show me crowd.

Heck, it's not easy to play in Orono let alone win there, that said, I do remember a beat down with Danny Tirone that was fun! Agree; setting venue aside, UNH had
to know what was coming at them. I said before this game that it wasn't the result that I was concerned with it was going to be the performance that mattered. And boy oh boy
that performance...Now some fans are saying that UNH is a 'young team' and Maine is a 'good team' so that was the difference. Not sure if I'm buying that.

Doubt that BC expected to lose to NU (who is coming on as of late) in their barn as you point out. How the 'Cats do in the next one (darn have to miss that) matters alot.
Or does it given the competition? How they assert / regroup against Rensselaer will be huge- need to win big here or there has to be 'trouble in paradise'. (nothing personal Rensselaer fans)

Yep, show us 'Cats!! [TABLE="class: data, border: 0, cellpadding: 3, cellspacing: 0"]

This was an absolute horrendous performance. The first few minutes Maine was all over UNH and set the tone. I thought maybe scoring first was going to be what was needed, but nope. Giving up a goal with 3.7 left and 23 seconds into the 2nd was an early nail in the coffin. And for all that is holy, can we get Huard off the power play? He got stripped twice at the blue line to give up almost breakaways. And he got smoked where a guy went around him like he was in quicksand.

To Refs point, is this the UNH team we were expecting or is it a bump in the road? Maine is a tough place to play and a win was not expected, but effort was. We will see how they respond Saturday, should be interesting. Guessing practice tomorrow will not be a fun one.
