UNH Hockey 2023-2024 Season Thread - End Of The Cellar-Dweller Era??

JB or others, is my memory correct that DU had a 14 year run of getting the team to the NCAA tournament? Was a record until Michigan overtook it.

UNH had a 10 year run from 2001-02 to 2010-11 of making the tournament every year. From 1991-1992 to 2010-2011 it was 17 NCAA tournaments in 20 years. As for historical records about who has the longest consecutive tournament streak, I could really careless.

From a fan perspective I probably enjoyed the 1996-97 to 2002-03 window the most. Seven years, above .600 winning percentage every one of them, 4 frozen fours, 4 years of less than 10 loses.

Nothing wrong with a head coach who hires assistants good enough to steal some of the credit. That’s part of the ‘fastball’ for me.

In fact, a failure to do that in recent seasons might be the biggest culprit of UNHs downturn…

I’ve said it before - it David Carle got the Denver job in his 20s and - instead of assuming he had the job all figured out - hired two former DI HCs in their 40s/50s.

UNH, meanwhile, chose the limited to no track record, friends and family, I’m the expert/recruiter route. And here we are…

Nightengale at MSU - also hired (perceptually) over his own head for top help.

There is an old statement about managers/leaders - A's hire A's, B's hire C's. "B's" are terrified hiring, even accidentally, "A's" that could take their job.

If you are truly an "A" it doesn't bother you to hire people who are smarter or more experienced than you. I run a research team and when I hire, I am looking for somebody that is an expert (typically PhD) in a space where nobody already on the team is an expert. I am also looking for a team player that is willing to work outside their comfort zone, have the intellectual and creative confidence to really stretch and continue growing and learning, I specifically hunt for "A's".

IMO, hiring top talent is the #1 job of a leader. If you screw that up everything else is just so much harder and all the paths to success become incredibly narrow. So as a head coach you absolutely get credit for having top assistant coaches on your team and the work they do.

It's not an "upturn" in recruiting unless/until you are bringing home the goods on a regular basis - not just a Poturalski here, or Gildon there, or Crookshank or Conmey (sp?). Bring in good players up and down your line-up every season, teach them how to become better players and play winning hockey, and give them a vocation where they can make a real living at least in the AHL, as opposed to chasing buses in The Coast or flying off to the Belgian Eurodivisie III or whatever scrub-level leagues are out there across the pond.

Umile/McCloskey and even Umile/Borek did quite a bit of that for a pretty long stretch. It's a shame Umile let up at the end, and probably started to believe his own press/smell his own farts. Getting old in a competitive business is not an easy thing, as I'm learning to this day, but it's doable if you're really into it, and aren't in a hurry to start spending most of your days fishing, golfing, traveling to warm places, etc. Those things are all VERY tempting though, and we're all just humans in the end. IMO Umile was very good - not great - and for a very long time ...

Wheelhouse, right there JB!

Hearing that Tyler Muszelik isn't in the line up tonight....no clue why...

Also..heart is heavy for our Maine friends...

Injury of some kind

Maine and New Hampshire are special places to me as are the many people I've met there over the years. What will it take to outlaw these weapons? Why does anyone really need an AK-15???

I do believe...we are.ranked!

Slow the roll! We still have Dartmouth to deal with, and that game is always unpredictable. But, who would have predicted this start? I dare say nobody. Lots of positives tonight (play of Fitzgerald and Sardinian, puck control, shots with purpose) with few negatives (power play maybe). Definitely an encouraging start to the season.

Going to give credit where credit is due fully recognizing its early...and yeah Dartmouth is next up...can't look past to Providence. Have seen us lose to NU soooo many times...just feels good.

Ps...I really like that Fitzgerald kid's game

CHAMPIONS OF OCTOBER!!!!

There was definitely somethings to like in this game.
  • I like the faceoff wins, it is amazing what happens when you aren't chasing the puck after every drop
  • Goals 1 & 3 they had a horseshoe jammed up there butts, and for this game it fit "the harder I work the luckier I get". These guys worked tonight. Best example was just under 5 minutes left in the 3rd, UNH up 4-1. Forward takes it into the Northeastern zone to let everybody else change. Gets crunched about the faceoff dot between 3 Huskies. Still beats them all to the corner to reclaim the puck. HARDWORK
  • Going to the front of the net, over and over
  • 50/50 pucks UNH got more than their share
  • Speed UNH looked faster all night - also see 50/50 pucks
  • Being where you are supposed to be, multiple times UNH had passes where the guy with the puck knew where he was going and just looked to confirm his teammate was where he was supposed to be
  • Poised with the puck - all night lots of situations where UNH didn't panic, not looking like the puck is a live grenade to get off my stick
What I didn't like. You could definitely see these 2 teams are in completely different places. UNH based how their season started were just at a higher intensity from the puck drop. Northeastern hasn't played a game in 2 weeks and that was Bentley. My worry is this is a classic UNH Champions of October win. Is there more in there or are they flat out already?

It is nice to see the effort rewarded. At this point it is a fun team to watch. Still really worried what happens the next time they get punched in the face. Last time it made a 2-2 game through 58 minute end at 5-2.

So far, pleasantly surprised

I will wait until after Saturday to see if they don't play down to Dartmouth, but I am close to claiming responsibility for the start of the season. Shake a tree and a leaf will fall. I just hope I get a ring for lighting a fire with MS7 and the team.

See you Saturday.

Based on recent results, no question the COO trophy goes to UNH again. Only caveat being ....unless UMO sweeps Q at Q this weekend (in the words of Joe...aint happening). Congrats ;-)
