GAME DAY!! Time to bury those Black Bears! Gooooo 'Catttsssss!!!

HR's probably useless predict:

UNH wins a squeaker 3-2

In a hockey clash so grand and true,
Maine and UNH, with coaches in view.
Shawn Walsh led Maine with skill and flair,
While Umile's coaching, UNH did bear.

Guite on the ice, Maine's star so bright,
Souza of UNH, a valiant knight.
Alfie guarded Maine's net with grace,
Conklin of UNH stood in his place.

In '99, Maine's triumph was sweet,
With a score of 3-2, victory complete.
2002's semis, Maine's glory anew,
A score of 7-2, their dominance true.

Love the optimism Ref! Nothing in this year’s resume warrants it, but it could happen. :)

Oh come on...we are not exactly chopped liver lol

If they do lose then that will hasten the inevitable announcement of MS7's pending extension which I suspect will surprise and disappoint at the same time...

Roses are red
violets are blue
unh,
no hardware for you.

Strange to see the Maine fans back trolling our thread. Sign of the times I guess, things must be getting slow in the fields of VCR and skidder repair.

No, not chopped liver by any stretch. Just recognizing that the next tournament team they beat on the road this year will be the first. Still, will surely watch in hopes of a grand surprise!

Snively opened 2/13/1965 against Norwich. To make my life easier I am going to start with the first full season, the 1965-66 season. [TABLE="border: 1, cellpadding: 1, width: 500"]

Little history because fewer of us have been around forever. O'Connor only coached his one year because Kullen was out getting a heart transplant. This was the mid/late 80's so the procedure was very risky, Kullen returned to coach 2 more years and ultimately died because his body rejected the heart, Hockey East coach of the year award is named after coach Kullen. It was Kullen and staff (Sean Coady) that restocked the cupboards and allowed Umile to go 22-11-2 (.657%) his first year as head coach. That 4 year turn around would potentially have been quicker had Kullen not been so sick and out with the heart issues. For reference Kullen (and staff) first 2 recruiting classes included All-Americans Domenic Amodeo and Joe Flanagan, future NHL players Kevin Dean, Scott Morrow, Chris Winnes, and Adren Plavisc. Also Savo Mitrovic who I always liked and was a 1 point per game over his 4 years.

So yeah Souza has had an EXTREMELY long run for what he has produced.

P.S. I think it is clear, that I believe Kullen and O'Connor each deserve an asterisk for extenuating circumstances and that the talent they acquired early on, speaks to the immediate impact they had on program direction.

Excellent summary! Agree on Kullen and O’Connor. Of those players you mention that they recruited, Dean is 15th all time for UNH alums in NHL games played with 331, Plavsic 22nd with 214 NHL games, and Winnes 33rd with 33 NHL games played. Flanagan played two seasons in the IHL and ECHL; Mitrovic eight seasons in the ECHL, CoHL, and WCHL; Amodeo nine seasons on the Canadian Team, ECHL, and Europe; and Morrow eleven seasons in the AHL, IHL, and ECHL. Will be interesting to see how MS7’s recruits fare post-UNH.

In those days it was much harder for a College player to even get to the NHL. There was a giant bias for Major Junior, with the NHL very focused on ultra physical play (boxing on ice). Today the NHL game has opened up with fair more emphasis on skill and speed.

Agreed. Makes the number of NHL games played by Langway, Leach, Gould, Hislop, Jay Miller (less emphasis on skill there), Lumley, Bob Miller, Brickley, Douris, Lacombe, and Crowder all the more impressive.
