Wow, that is news...Well, good luck to him.... as for the BHawks sorry to see it end but happy for the Blues; bet their coach is happy too. New thread yet?

Thrilled to see the 'Hawks (and Kings) out of it. Certainly the West is now officially wide open, with San Jose, St. Louis, Dallas, and the winner of Anaheim/Nashville still alive. Hoping the Sharks and Blues make the most of the opportunity, as they've both had histories of having talented teams come up short in the postseason.

As far as the new thread's delayed arrival ... we're going to put an APB on Felger. Maybe the reinstatement of Brady's suspension has him pre-occupied? wildcatdc - where are you, here is your chance to shine, dude!!

UNH has had some undersized defensemen (5'10" or less) who have overachieved defensively and/or offensively. Kevin Kapstad and Brett Kostolansky (both were 19/20-year-old freshman) come to mind. I don't think 5'10" Furgele (21/22 years old as a freshman) showed signs of overachieving in his two years at UNH. He played in 36 out of 40 games as a freshman (2 goals and 8 assists, -5) and all 37 games as a sophomore. This season, he scored 1 goal (no power play goals) and 12 assists, had 14 penalties and a +/- rating of -15.

By contrast, Matt Dawson a 19-year-old, 5'10" freshman defenseman played in 35 out of 37 games, scored 4 goals (including 2 power play goals) and 6 assists, had 6 penalties and a +/- rating of +3. One could argue that Dawson has a higher ceiling in potential improvement than Furgele. In any event, best of luck to Furgele. This probably will give guys like Dylan Chanter (6'3") and Nick Nonis (6'2") more opportunities to play.

Kapstad played only 3 games his freshman year, but has carved out a nice post-college career in Europe, whereas Kostolansky played 28 games his freshman year, and has played three years in the ECHL, the past two for the Rapid City Rush. Both four-year guys who made substantial contributions their last three years years at UNH. But, I think that we will need a HUGE year from our captain, and big years from rest of our blue-liners, this coming season if we want to improve upon 11 wins.

As far as the British Columbia midget ranks, they should just follow the Penticton coach around as he recruits for his team...

Thought we had a chance, but Arizona State gets Sandhu, their second "Provincial U17 team member" to go with the AJHL defenseman of the year, Paschniruk. Strong footprint out west for them.

Thought we had a chance, but Arizona State gets Sandhu, their second "Provincial U17 team member" to go with the AJHL defenseman of the year, Paschniruk. Strong footprint out west for them.

And they are doing all this without a rink that is finalized or a conference. They are one of the most dangerous start up programs in the country as the warm weather along with playing at a big time school (all sports) makes it hard for good recruits to pass up. When they get the rink and conference that is just icing on the cake.

I thought I read somewhere that they had a lot of issues (ASU); the 'sky was fallling' kind of stuff, players leaving, etc...no? Or was that just a bump in the road for the start up?

It's no surprise to me after seeing that article that they're competitive on the trail immediately. Still, this is incredibly disappointing news at this point...

Once they get the arena and the conference they can be a preferred destination of many top recruits because of the weather. That is the advantage they have over every other school in D1. What recruit wouldn't want to play college hockey at a huge school (ASU), in the warm weather with the amount of female students that will be crawling down their necks. It's a no brainer.

Somehow...I don't think they have that problem now, even in the cold weather...lol Which makes the case for coming to UNH even more compelling...

Still have to give the coach a lot of credit early - especially since they do not have an arena or a conference (and they may get stuck in the W).

Besides, Oxford, OH is fairly mild, the girls are hotter at Miami and Sandhu (he could have gone anywhere) said no to the RedHawks...

After simply having to fill his first DI roster, Powers seems to have taken a big step in recruiting. He's going for it - in a situation where a lot of coaches would just assume they'd miss...

Aw man, I'm not QUITE of the age to qualify as a grumpy old man, but I'm VERY close. Thus, I don't think I qualify to open it!

That, and my participation rate has diminished substantially as I spend most of my time these days ducking Zika mosquitos, and trying to operate in an economy that is on life support. (and with a government that is the definition of self-serving corruption!!)

He's under 6 feet, so we're not interested. We've also never had a recruit from the Central league.

Given the usual model, I assume he and Makar will be the backbone for U.Mass.

Thanks Bob, I saw that as well. Crotty turns 17 next week and he's listed at 6'1", 171 lbs. He would fit nicely into this model:
