UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

He wanted to go to UNH, and play other sports as well as hockey. had interest in baseball, football but after PG that wained, which led to Merrimack and than BU deal after Canadian kid bailed at last minute.

Says BC wouldnt even talk to him and he went on to become BU's second all time leading scorer after he graduated.

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

One of the NCAA sanctions placed the UNH hockey program under probation:
"Two years of probation beginning on the date the university accepted the committee’s additional recommended penalties (April 24, 2009, to April 23, 2011). That punishment was self-imposed by the school."(http://www.uscho.com/news/college-hockey/id,17134/UNHGetsTwoYearsProbationForRecruitingViolations).
Perhaps this probation contributed to UNH's decision to not enroll two top prospects - Cam Reid or Matt White - last year. Reid and White had not completed one or more high school courses required for admission to UNH. If UNH had looked the other way and admitted them any way, then it might have been grounds for a new investigation by the NCAA.

Good theory. It's hard to say what would have happened if Borek's "E-mail-Gate" had never occured. Did it scare potential star players away? Maybe. Did it force UNH to clean it up it's act and take a harder look at admissions and not allow "gifted scholars" like Joe Charlebois on campus? I would agree.

regarding UNHWildcat.tv- if anyone has experience with this service- can multiple users gain sign on access thru the same membership at the same time? Some other like services can be used that way. What is the situation with this one?

Don't know the answer to that one - have only used the service on my own. The quality of the hockey broadcast is reasonable. The camera follows the puck fairly well. Instant replays are provided during the game. The audio is the radio play-by-play. No substitute for being at the Whit but it's worth the small payment.

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Hi Goldie,

In regards to your question about unhwildcats.tv, multiple people can use the same login information and watch the same game at the same time. Like yourself I was curious about this, so I tried it with my friend in ohio and she used my login information and we could both watch the hockey game! Hope this helps.

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

I have heard from a reliable source (sorry - don't mean to sound like Hokydad:o ) that Grayson Downing is still committed to attend UNH. He and the Westside Warriors play their final exhibition game tonight.

Good news. I still say there's less than a 50% chance that both Downing and Laleggia end up at UNH, but a guy can hope!

As well as the BCHL college commitment site:
http://www.bchl.ca/leagues/commitments.cfm?clientid=1413&leagueid=2393

I can only think of 2 things- He didn't want to compete with TVR for playing point on the PP. That's what he does, and that's exactly what TVR's coaches referrenced when TVR made him commitment last yr.
And B.Kessel has no plans on leaving after this yr.

Kessel is gone after this year. I wouldn't be surprised if Laleggia wasn't up to par academically. Bummer too, because he'd be a perfect defenseman for UNH. With his size, I can't see him being successful in the W if that is the route he is going now.

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Just confirmed that Penticton D Laleggia has decommited from UNH
That was from Heisenberg's Twitter this afternoon. Looking for confirmation, I tweeted Ryan Pinder who covers Pentiction.
Yes, he has. RT @RyanPinder Your blog lists Joey Laleggia as uncommitted. Has he decommitted from UNH?

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Ryan Pinder is the play-by-play announcer for the Penticton Vees http://twitter.com/ryanpinder.
I'd say that counts as a reliable source. I hope this source and others will provide information on the real reason(s) Laleggia reneged on his commitment to UNH.
Perhaps someone attending tomorrow's BBQ with the team will get Coach Umile's (and/or Borek) perspective on what went wrong and share it on this thread.

Pinder is as good as they get in Jr. hockey ...he is all over Vees coverage.

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

I was wondering if anyone went to the Friends of UNH Hockey Face-Off Feed yesterday, and had a chance to meet the new freshmen class?

Yeah, because the "real" reason couldn't possibly be that a 17 yr.old actually changed their mind...like that never happens....

You could very well be correct. Sometimes the best explanation when something goes wrong is that sh*t happens - particularly when an adolescent is involved.
The history behind my reference to the "real" reason is the ongoing debate on the UNH threads regarding the competency of the UNH coaching staff. When three top recruits - Bourque, Reid and White - decommitted last season, I think many UNH fans were wondering what happened. Some expressed their opinion that Coach Umile and his staff were becoming increasingly less successful at the recruiting game. For them, this fit together with a feeling that the coaching staff were not capable of winning important playoff games either. Before drawing any conclusions, I was interested in knowing what actually happened with those 3 recruits. Now that another top prospect - Joey Laleggia - has decommitted, the same questions have arisen.

Look, I don't know much about the state of affairs at UNH...although I could've sworn I watched them in the NCAA regionals in Albany last spring.

As for Bourque, he jumped to the Q no ? He didn't decommit UNH to head somewhere else, he decided not to go to college.. How does that become coaching incompetence? (This same scenario just happened to RPI two weeks ago - D recruit Nick Quinn decommited and just played his first game with Oshawa). If anything they're guilty of signing kids who are so good they had options.

USHR wrote about this inside their piece on Bourque decommitting to UNH:
"...schools are becoming increasingly wary of committing kids from the NTDP. As recent events have shown, there's a real downside. Colleges might luck out, but it's a calculated risk, for they might also be left holding the bag, watching from the sidelines while major junior continues to skim top players from the program."

It shouldn't be too much of a surprise that baby Bourque jumped, given current trends, the Patrick Roy-Ray B. connection with the Remparts and not to mention his brother's famous " I wasn't a big fan of going to school and going to class..." statement after departing BU as a freshman.

Let's not forget that Cam Reid apparently couldn't get past UNH admissions, which utlimately led to his decision to de-committ. You could debate for hours as to whom is at fault...the player, the coaches, or both. And wasn't that the same problem with White?

With LaLeggia, he came to a game in Durham while traveling with his bantam hockey team at the age of 15, liked what he saw, and immediately made a verbal committment. I'm sorry, but at the age of 15, no kid should be making that kind of committment, let alone be expected to keep it. Of course there are exceptions, but realistically, if a kid is that good, he, his parents and his coach should be shopping around more and hold off on making any sort of committment, verbal or otherwise, until they are absolutely sure.

I beginning to wonder if Umile and Co. are under so much pressure to land top recruits that they are putting more pressure than is necessary to get these kids to commit early.
