UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

thescoutingnews.com seems to be making positive remarks about:
Casey Thrush - "Muskegon scouts have clearly made a divine decision when they invested their first round draft money into Team Maryland U18 1992 DOB left winger Casey Thrush!"

and
Maxim Gaudreault - "Hidden Gems? Don't be surprised when Jr. A/D 1 scouts descend in droves on Team Maryland prospects Maxim Gaudreault and Casey Thrush ..."

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

The press release came out announcing the freshman class, and Kevin Goumas is on it while Grayson Downing is not. Downing is currently listed on the bchl website as a 2010/2011 commit, so hopefully he and Laleggia will be in the bc another year and matriculate in 2011, and are not going to the dub. With Goumas in for Downing, this freshman forward corps looks very weak. Wouldn't surprise me in the least to see none of them skating a regular shift.

That's very disappointing news about Grayson Downing. He turned 18 on April 18, 2010 and is listed on the Westside Warrior website as 6' 170 lbs. He just finished his second season in the British Columbia Hockey League and NHL Central Scouting projects him to be selected 144th in the upcoming NHL draft. I hope there is a forthcoming article somewhere on the web which explains his decision to not attend UNH this season. The number of possible explanations which translate into him never coming to UNH (e.g., playing Major Junior Hockey; decommitting from UNH and committing to another college) are concerning.

On the plus side, it's encouraging to see that Nick Sorkin is planning to follow through on his commitment to UNH. Two other future commits from Team Maryland - Casey Thrush and Maxim Gaudreault - look to be solid prospects. If Sorkin has a positive freshman year experience at UNH then it could reinforce Thursh and Gaudreault's commitment to UNH.

That all looks great and they are solid+ recruits but you are referrencing a website that is basically posted and written by parents or people who are paid to do si to subscribers.

again, solid recruits but I wouldnt put an ounce of weight into it

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

as usual you dont get it and try and add to the discussion with a useless post

The grind is going sideways and playing jr hockey only. Almost every kid would benefit by playing another year or 2 or jr's but many want to go to college and enjoy the experience. Many kids have decommitted and gone to another school because they were told to play another year. The D picked up a couple days ago by Northeastern is the perfect example

the ultimate pot calling the kettle black.....unreal...

That is a silly statement.

A) I am sure Hardowa will play up against some of the larger teams, making room for the freshmen.
B) Nick Sorkin will be fine. I would think he is pretty comparable to Greg Burke.
C) Silengo was a solid prospect before his concussion. Think- Patrice Bergeron.
D) It's unfortunate that Goumas is coming in a year earlier than expected, but I am sure if he puts on some weight this summer he'll be just fine. He is supposed to be pretty fast - generally fast = fun to watch.

Oh well. I am excited.

Hardowa played up because Umile wanted another d man dressed because Kostolansky was iffy with an injury. With added defensive depth, he'll be back on the blueline this season.
Sorkin had 8 goals in 53 games with two different ushl teams this year. I hope I am proven wrong, but he does not have the same offensive upside as Burke.
This was the first time I've heard Silengo compared to Patrice Bergeron, so I hope you're onto something with that (and not on something ;) :D ).

FWIW, here's the lineup I would like to see in October:
Thompson-Desimone-Henrion
Burke-Borisenok-Sislo
Speelman-Manz-Moses
Sorkin-Pavelski-McCarey
Goumas-Block-Ivens Anderson/Silengo

I suggest you look in a mirror, champ.

CHC- my first thought as well, considering White and Reid. But, you know, those are just unique circumstances and the coaching crew knew (most likely) long long before any of the recruiting info reported did.

I want to think that the extra yr for Downing & Laleggia, recently 18 and soon to be 18 respectively, could be a huge leadership oportunity for both that will help UNH down the line. But it's true - you just never know.

Having said that I don't think a kid like Goumas is going to come in early (such as Leblanc & Speelman) and sit. He was in line to have a pretty decent yr in the USHL- would likely have landed with another team if he chose to.

so.. on that note I think he plays and it opens the door for Henrion & Moses to potentially reunite!

I agree with most of what you said, but I'm not sure what you mean with this line. Leblanc dressed every game his freshman year and Speelman missed seven this year and six of those were because of injury.

i'zon, I hope you're right.
Here is information from an article written about Downing in early April:
"Downing is back home in Abbotsford, wrapping up his Grade 12 studies at Mennonite Educational Institute.
Westside head coach Darren Yopyk said that Downing's game has a lot of qualities for NHL scouts to appreciate.
"He's got very good hands, and he thinks the game very well – offensively in particular – and he's a good skater," Yopyk said. "He started the year off tremendously, and all in all, he had a good year. Teams might not have gotten all the evaluation they wanted of him (due to the injury), and it took him a while to get back to playing the way he can."
Downing was selected by the Kamloops Blazers in the fourth round of the Western Hockey League draft in 2007, but he elected to forgo major junior hockey in favour of the junior A/college route. He's committed to the NCAA Division 1 hockey program at the University of New Hampshire, and he'll take his game south of the border either this fall or in 2011.
"I wanted to get an education in case things didn't work out with hockey right away," Downing explained. "I'm not the biggest guy (listed at 6'0", 170 pounds), so going to college gives me an extra four years to develop and become fully grown mentally, physically and emotionally."

Henrion and Moses on the same line seems like a natural fit given their history together with the Junior Bruins. That would allow Henrion to return to the center position (which he reportedly played in juniors).

RTW-. what I meant simply was that those two kids, came in and had plenty of ice time.(barring injury) My guess is that Goumas will get the same opportunity to play. 59g 12-29-41 in his first yr in th USHL, on a so so team is pretty decent. In fact, the best of all the UNH recruits in the league- all having their first yr.

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Got to watch Goumas quite a few times while I was out in Indianapolis this past season. I would have liked to have seen him get a second year in the USHL. With a second season I think he could have come in and contributed right away; I think he will have some adjusting to do with UNH, but who knows. Hope I am wrong. UNH in a tough situation again trying to fill spots late.

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Looking forward to see how Wyer handles the pressure in net. It will be nice to see Umile using alternate goalies again if Wyer is given the chance to prove himself.

Translation: For the love of God, I hope Umile doesn't go with the "one goalie" concept this year! ;)

Maybe in a couple years but he is not ready to be rotated even in hockey east right now

Correct. I have heard that Umile is planning on Tyler Scott as the #2 to start the season. I'm hoping all three get a chance early in the season to get some experience under their belts.

Interesting....but I thought that they were trying to bring in Wyer early to get him some playing time? Or did I mis-read that somewhere?

They were originally slated to bring in Cody Campbell this fall, but Campbell struggled through the first half of this season in the USHL. Campbell had a great second half after being traded, so look for him to be a 3 year starter if things stay on their current course.

size/create space -a playermaker- a shooter
Thompson-Borisenok-Moses
this line did well the start of last year
Speelman-Block/Goumas-McCarey
we need a third line center bad!
Henrion-Manz-Pavelski

Henrion....McCarey....Block....one of these guys need to step up...
