Chuck Murray: Sal Lupoli is a northeastern grad. The fact that UNH got a bucket of money from Key Auto and the state legislature but still can’t drum up the dough for the renovations only serves to harm fundraising. UNH needs the legislature to get more involved.
A much better approach is the governor and state reps and senators. Money for renovations and more money for salaries infrastructure. Otherwise the program will stay at the bottom with a once in a decade Cinderella season.
Thanks for the info. A little more timely info hit the press in the last 24 hours (I'll provide the most accessible link):
New plans in Hampton propose a six-story Hampton Beach Casino facility for music, gaming, a hotel and 99 condos.

Lupoli may be a Northeastern grad, but as a Merrimack Valley guy down to the core, he's poured his heart and soul into making Lawrence more presentable over the last generation, and has been pretty successful with the enormous mill building complex just north of Rte. 495, which used to be probably the biggest potential firetrap in New England (recall what happened a generation ago with the Malden Mills inferno just up the river in Methuen) and is now filled to the brim with commercial tenants, medical services, etc.
And when your world view is shaped by the Merrimack and Rte. 495, it is hardly a surprise that his next mega-project is the Hampton Beach expansion, which is percolating along nicely so far. At some point, the final approvals for the project will need to be approved by the folks in Concord. Lupoli is "away", even if he is a close "away" (ditto Joe Faro, who is a UNH guy long ago). So how does an "away" guy grease the skids for his HBC megaproject as an end game? Well, one way to do it is to step in and do Concord a solid by assisting with USNH issues.
Long and short, Concord is NOT gonna come to UNH Hockey's rescue, nor should they, not in this state anyway. But there is no shortage of capital in southern NH these days (I haven't even mentioned Dean Kamen), and UNH still has a fair few hockey alums who have pocketed a nice salary history to consider future benevolence (JvR/TvR, Bret Pesce ... shame CDS and Foegele didn't leave on better terms, eh?), and with two NH born NCAA D-1 champion football coaches (Ryan Day & Chip Kelly) there are even legacy opportunities for across the street. Day may still be a relative newbie, operating in seven figures, but Kelly has to be sitting on an eight-figure pile after all these years.
Folks making the big policy decisions in Durham can either be lazy and continue to whine about lack of State funding ... or they can think outside the box about public-private partnerships to improve the U's lot in academia. They've already done that in several areas, kudos to them, but that is ultimately going to be the way forward. Think big, and partner with local hotshots who are of a legacy mindset. Make a new model for academic success that benefits students, employees and those who live and work in the communities around UNH.
The possibilities are endless, for those who think with imaginations and open minds. Or just beg Concord and lose.
P.S. - congrats to Warren Foegele, who scored the first penalty shot goal of his NHL career for the Kings against the Habs the other night. As Snives has been known to say ... why cannot we get players like that??
