UNH 2024/2025 Goldberg Edition

In search of two tickets for tomorrow’s game against BC. Would love to bring my Dad. If anyone has any extras or would be willing to sell at a reasonable price please let me know. Thanks!
I saw someone on the UNH hockey fan page (facebook) advertising 4 tix...let me see if they still have them will get back..

Update saw a post on the UNH main Facebook page that someone had two. I messaged to see if they were still available but feel free to check that out.

Ok so they have 2 tix for 10 bucks each. If you message me here I can connect you..

They did something similar to this last season...it was players only. Pretty tame questions as you'd expect, nothing more than 'what's your favorite away arena'...Gone
are the days fans hear direct testimony, ask real questions that might matter to the HC...(there's a reason for that). It's always nice to be with the team tho, I guess..you
take what you can get.

Ps...yesterday being Wednesday is the Souza presser with select media. I wonder what they talked about. Sometimes you get snippets from those who attend or the UL might
have a story; haven't checked my UL today (which I want to clarify I ONLY get during hockey season lol)
We need to ask questions. who knows who they are sending up to talk to STH. The one last year in the stands was dumb. It was hi how are you blah blah. I doubt MS7 or ADR will be there as they don't want to have to have any accountability.

Though there are two games this weekend which means a lot of time upstairs where I may cross paths with ADR.

Just got my email to renew my season tickets. First year in a while that I’m seriously considering not renewing them. I think I will wait to see what direction the athletics department decides to go. Favorite part is the part that says “the 2024-25 season is still going strong!" Must have forgotten to tell the marketing department we are in fact not going strong.
This is funny because I just was talking to JB about this on Tuesday. It has gotten earlier and earlier each year, probably in fear of not winning a game for the rest of the year. I will still be forced to buy my tickets but what is the incentive? Other than Maine games, nothing is a sell out. I can buy GA and sit or stand where I want.

I just bought tickets tonight for a friend for a BC game which should have been sold out a long time ago.

Not to get political but I have a feeling there's not going to be a ton of money available from the state given the massive cuts that are projected....and, school voucher programs (which I said...I don't want to get political about) But, as I've said, I am 100% in favor of building rennies...and was always for the 'tron.
:sneaky:
You are correct. Sununu screwed the pooch the last 6 years and left the new governor in a tough spot. Buy me a beer tomorrow and I can give you the details....

I do not think that Concord is going to be coughing extra funds for our State U anytime soon. The football scoreboard was funded by an unrestricted gift from a UNH librarian’s estate and the Whitt’s Jumbotron (I was for it before I was against it) was funded through an effort driven by former players’ parents. Sounds like Anthony DiLorenzo’s $4 mil gift has strings, like matching funds or something?
That is the interesting question on this whole thing. His cash so far has a sign on the building. My thought is that for nothing else at least build the shell with the money and then work on the rest, or just hold the money and do nothing. Based on his new house on the island and buying the old post office in portsmouth, that well I assume is dry.

Looking at it through the sharp lens of TDL's best interests ... he has his personal hideaway set (aforementioned island hideaway, 5 minutes from downtown Portsmouth, sweet!), and he has his hooks into the primest of prime blue chip real estate in downtown Portsmouth with "the old post office" (a/k/a McIntyre Complex) which he so nicely summed up his motivation as "well, my office is right across the street, and so I wasn't gonna spend the next 10 years watching someone else develop that (goldmine)". So $4.0M for naming rights and whatever else at The Whitt is almost loose change found between the couch cushions for him. Fun money for recreation, for at least what used to be "the biggest game in town" (UNH Hockey). But when you make the coin TDL has, you're generally not the type to throw it away, and you want to maximize your investment. So if there are strings, then good on TDL. He had to earn his own money, certainly not to gift it to UNH to pizz it away.

One word about Governor Ayotte and UNH Hockey ... back in the early days of the new building, one of my best UNH pals (and former poster on USCHO, who also worked part-time at Foster's Daily Democrat, with awesome local contacts) had two of the best tickets in the building, in the red band of seats at center ice, opposite the press box side. One of his close neighbors in adjacent seats was the fresh-faced young up-and-coming NH Attorney General ... yup, a very young Kelly Ayotte. BIG fan of UNH Hockey at the time, and she wasn't a local by any stretch (I believe they're still over an hour away on the opposite side of the Queen City). That's how big UNH Hockey used to be, folks.

More on this general topic in my next response ...

She could be the biggest fan of UNH Men's Hockey, but the reality is she had been left a mess by her predecessor.

He lived through the covid years where there was an influx of MA to NH with remote work. Look at housing values in NH. I am from north of north, but a house 5 years ago that was $70K is now $200.

Let's look at other two wisdom points. Reduced Room and Meals tax from 9% to 8.5%. If you go out to dinner, that saves you 50 cents on a $100. Instead of reducing this, why not redirect that money to USNH, which is poorly funded.

Second part is removing the interest and dividends tax. This does not impact the normal citizen, just the large corporations. Against a cut that was unneeded.

Let's not forget he has pissed off every hospital which most likely will result in a lawsuit over Medicaid and how that is funded.

So while he sits on the high horse saying he cuts taxes it was at the detriment of the entire state. And now he has left a mess for the current UNH Fan.

Side note, is it 7-2 or 8-2 tomorrow? Does BC go for 2 after the touchdown or just kick the PA?

Chuck Murray: Sal Lupoli is a northeastern grad. The fact that UNH got a bucket of money from Key Auto and the state legislature but still can’t drum up the dough for the renovations only serves to harm fundraising. UNH needs the legislature to get more involved.

A much better approach is the governor and state reps and senators. Money for renovations and more money for salaries infrastructure. Otherwise the program will stay at the bottom with a once in a decade Cinderella season.
Thanks for the info. A little more timely info hit the press in the last 24 hours (I'll provide the most accessible link):

Lupoli may be a Northeastern grad, but as a Merrimack Valley guy down to the core, he's poured his heart and soul into making Lawrence more presentable over the last generation, and has been pretty successful with the enormous mill building complex just north of Rte. 495, which used to be probably the biggest potential firetrap in New England (recall what happened a generation ago with the Malden Mills inferno just up the river in Methuen) and is now filled to the brim with commercial tenants, medical services, etc.

And when your world view is shaped by the Merrimack and Rte. 495, it is hardly a surprise that his next mega-project is the Hampton Beach expansion, which is percolating along nicely so far. At some point, the final approvals for the project will need to be approved by the folks in Concord. Lupoli is "away", even if he is a close "away" (ditto Joe Faro, who is a UNH guy long ago). So how does an "away" guy grease the skids for his HBC megaproject as an end game? Well, one way to do it is to step in and do Concord a solid by assisting with USNH issues.

Long and short, Concord is NOT gonna come to UNH Hockey's rescue, nor should they, not in this state anyway. But there is no shortage of capital in southern NH these days (I haven't even mentioned Dean Kamen), and UNH still has a fair few hockey alums who have pocketed a nice salary history to consider future benevolence (JvR/TvR, Bret Pesce ... shame CDS and Foegele didn't leave on better terms, eh?), and with two NH born NCAA D-1 champion football coaches (Ryan Day & Chip Kelly) there are even legacy opportunities for across the street. Day may still be a relative newbie, operating in seven figures, but Kelly has to be sitting on an eight-figure pile after all these years.

Folks making the big policy decisions in Durham can either be lazy and continue to whine about lack of State funding ... or they can think outside the box about public-private partnerships to improve the U's lot in academia. They've already done that in several areas, kudos to them, but that is ultimately going to be the way forward. Think big, and partner with local hotshots who are of a legacy mindset. Make a new model for academic success that benefits students, employees and those who live and work in the communities around UNH.

The possibilities are endless, for those who think with imaginations and open minds. Or just beg Concord and lose.

P.S. - congrats to Warren Foegele, who scored the first penalty shot goal of his NHL career for the Kings against the Habs the other night. As Snives has been known to say ... why cannot we get players like that?? ;)

Norbie, it's past my bedtime lol, but why are we arguing for more taxation to fund an educational model that is trending downhill anyway? The removal of interest and dividends taxes is drawing even more overtaxed southern New Englanders to southern NH, and some up your way too. Littleton and the Conways, the values have exploded, and that's in large part to people bringing their money north because the tax structure is more favorable to them. That will spin itself into further development, more jobs, and more money in areas that need it. You only need look just across the border at Western Maine or a good chunk of the western side of the Connecticut River Valley to see the rural poverty that persists in those heavily overtaxed states. We're far from perfect - perfect doesn't exist - but I'll take NH over any of our neighbors, any day (and twice on Sundays).

More and more kids are going into the trades, and so won't be incurring the crippling loans that other college-driven kids incur, sometimes with marginal majors that aren't worth a lick. People aren't stupid, and while college still works for many, a lot of marginal "college" kids who aren't afraid to work, are making smarter, more pragmatic decisions, and that will be better for ALL of us here in the long run.

UNH Hockey will turn the corner when they stop making excuses, and stop waiting for someone to bail them out of their current situation. When they too get smarter, and are willing to outwork the other guys, things will turn around. I promise. :)
