UNH 2021 Off-Season Thread: Finally!?!

Watched game on NESN in which Benton Maass picked up an assist, a +1, and two SOG in Minnesota State 2-0 win against the National Champions on Friday night. Meanwhile, I simultaneously followed on CHN game-tracker Kohei Sato pick up 5 SOG, a -1, and 4 PIM (slashing and tripping) with his new team in its 4-0 loss at the Dog House. As Bob Lobel would say, "Why cannot we get players like dat? Oh ........ wait ......."

Can't say I'm losing any sleep over either of them playing elsewhere. Good luck to them both. Maass never really developed (arguably regressed post-Gildon?) after a good frosh season, and Sato had one really good year, and was otherwise a decent 4th liner/spare part "Borek" type.

Conceptually however, it should be troubling that not many (any?) non-program players are looking to spend their bonus time with UNH. As has been discussed on here ad nauseum, there are only a limited number of ways you can improve a program. Initial recruiting usually being seen as Option 1A, and coaching up the existing talent as Option 1B, with a keen ear to pick up some stray opportunities like transfers, fifth year kids, etc. being the 3rd way. MS7 and his cohorts had better be really good with the "coaching up" part 'cuz the recruiting thingies aren't exactly catching fire.

Nice photo BTW 'Watcher. Its owner/wearer, however, is NOT the answer to Goalie Quiz Q5 ...

Like many of our players, as I documented with hard data a few threads back, which has led me to write previously that we not only have a recruiting problem, but also a coaching problem (i.e., coaching down).

Souza ended the press conference on a high note pointing out his excitement for fans returning to the Whittemore Center this year after they were unable to come last year.

We certainly feel like we have a huge advantage here because of our fan base. I know, talking to a lot of [the fans], they’re excited to get back and we’re really optimistic that we’re going to have a lot of good games because naturally people are looking for things to do,” said Souza. “I’m really excited to get started next Friday.”

Gosh, is he going to be disappointed. Folks have found other things to do in the interim, which is generally what happens when you take your fan base for granted for an extended period of time.

Well, at least the pep band might be able to liven things up a bit. They've had tons of practice time to get ready, eh?

I don't know how many will attend but I know my circle plan on it and I know many more are very happy to get getting back to games. We'll see! On another note it was a pleasure to watch TvR last night in person at the B's game. He held his own I thought quite well; had one great shot on goal. Just great to see a guy who was slated for a "D3" school. Sitting behind us were some young guys (well, his age) who had gone to UNH with him and loved it that he got them out of a few oral presentations because he traveled so much with the hockey team lol. In the warm up it was wild to see him chatting it up with Ovi and Oshie. Just great to see!! Unfortunately tho my Bruins weren't able to beat the Caps and most are blaming it on the goalie Linus. Many want Swayman to handle the opener...Maine fans must be so proud!

No one is questioning your dedication to the cause. My comments were aimed at the folks in charge, the ones who managed to squander a multi-thousand-long waiting list above full capacity for the better part of a decade, and now can barely fill half the house on a good night. That's basically a 75% drop in overall support already, and now the school is making things hard for half of the remaining 25% to get excited about going back, plus to have to see what stacks up to be a mediocre team at best. It feels like I'm calculating the half-life of UNH fandom at this point.

HR, let's put it this way. For every new-found fan like you and others like you, there are probably at least another 5 fans who have walked away or become disinterested. I actually consider myself one of the surviving 25%, but now despite being able to do pretty much anything and everything I want - playing AND coaching, outdoors AND indoors - there is now this additional barrier. So I guess that puts me in the category of the "opting/forced out" group of that remaining "surviving" 25%, along with a few other like-minded folks who have weighed in with similar thoughts.

If someone wanted to write their thesis on how to screw up a goldmine of a D-1 hockey program to the point of irrelevance over the course than less than a full generation, they'd be hard-pressed to find a better example than "Titletown" a/k/a University of New Hampshire in Durham NH.

It's just so effing sad, and there's no sign of brain activity to suggest it's changing soon ...

Some answers on the lineup
These things tend to change depending on how things are going, but Pierson has been most often skating in the preseason on what may be UNH's first line on Friday night with senior Tyler Ward and freshman Robert Cronin.

So, as we roll into the fall and players returning to school, here are the lines as I see them. No particular first line, but decent depth. The key will be the second line RW. In theory, they could push Stevenson to the off wing to make two full lines, or Cafarelli has grown into the role. The next question are whether Cronin can step in as the 20 year old USHL top scorer, or if he needs time as the 19 year old 8 point USHL kid. But there is lots of depth at lines four and five where you can cobble together some production. [TABLE="border: 1, cellpadding: 1"]

I think Reid is the clear #1, and pair him with Verrier or a steady defense first kid. Eriksson can man the Powerplay, but his 5x5 play will need attention, so pair him with another big Defense first kid like Huard or Gagne would work. [TABLE="border: 1, cellpadding: 1"]

Overall, I saw I had them for 5th or 6th with U.Conn, ahead of U.Mass. That probably needs revision, but that's their upside. On the downside, they should outpace the 9/10/11 spots for Maine, Merrimack and Vermont, but one can't say UNH is so superior to them that you don't have to worry. Apart from the talent level, UNH was very weak on the puck, and on sticking to players on D. Too many quick turnovers with open guys shooting at Robinson. As much as I hate the "win every game 0-0 mentality," that must be UNH's goal this year.

I would consider a monetary contribution to whomever the master's or doctorial candidate may be to research, write and present this thesis. "Emoji's inserted".

Save your money and just give the task to the 1st semester Freshmen at Paul. Even at that stage, they are more than capable of figuring this sad puzzle out.

Full arena filled seat with PAYING customer = Good
30+% Unfilled seats + discounted filled seat = Bad

Guess The Attendance for UNH's season opener vs. Union

Announced paid attendance: 3,200
Actual people in attendance: 2,000

And I think this is pretty optimistic on my part ...

WIS predictions/odds for Game One v. Union

UNH 5 Union 2
Over/Under: 5.5 total goals (taking the over)
First UNH goal of the season: Jackson Pierson
Compelling MS7 post-game quote: "We're on to Union ... again"

Let's goooo 'Cats! Love your optimism Chuck. HR's prediction:

UNH 4 Union 1
First goal Eric MacAdams
No clue about the over/under; too far over my head hahaha
Compelling Coach Quote: "The guys competed hard tonight looking for the same tomorrow night". (ha!)

I will take a pass on predictions for game tonight. But, y'all gotta admit that watcher's opening line of seniors is a big improvement over Umile's checking line of seniors a few years ago.

No Cafarelli in the lineup, but Cronin is on first line. Answering some of the questions I raised in the offseason.

That's because there's a FR on the line! That said, they better be a big improvement because the bottom nine as constituted tonight leaves a lot of questions.

Engaras and Blaisdell being tasked with spreading out the scoring and carrying lines two and three; hate it, stack the talent and let the rest of the guys can focus on skating hard and checking. Would rather see the top-four on defense shake out as Gagne/Reid and Erikkson/MacKinnon. Still should be a win against a depleted/inexperienced Union team at home...
