UNH 2021 Off-Season Thread: Finally!?!

Bottom four, same as its been for sometime now - but one thing often overlooked in Maine's uptick in recruiting and optimism is Vermont's more subtle uptick in recruiting and optimism. We might be on the verge of a two-team race to the bottom, in spite of those two teams being led by a couple of the 'best recruiters' in the business...

Eh, we can all see the path downward. I can also see a narrow path up to 6th, beating Lowell and U.Conn. And if Evans, Sardarayan, Ardanaz and Carfagna (and Muszelik) have good seasons, I can see us treading water near the "top half of the bottom half" (tm - the good place).
Let's see them step on the ice this year and then we can judge happily or harshly.

For our sake, let's hope its not harshly, not the least of which would mean giving Marty another coaching decision before he retires and leaves it to a competent boss. I'd rather a couple more mediocre years than let Marty doom us for another decade.

Oh please ... give it a rest, Darius. Survival rates for students are 99.99+%, and unless you're over 80, you'll probably live. And if you're over 80, something is likely going to catch up with you soon anyway. Most of the fatalities are still from folks in assisted living scenarios, and the average life expectancy for folks going into assisted living is around 18 months - look it up.

Students going to games are more likely to be killed in a freak Zamboni accident. Personally, I'm done with the obedience masks. If you like 'em, use 'em. The B's had a full house in the playoffs with the Islanders and somehow that didn't turn into the vaunted "superspreader" event.

FWIW I've gotten the shots as of last Spring, but if someone has decided not to get the shot(s), I have no issue with them in the least. The guy currently trying to peddle them (forcefully recently) told folks less than a year ago that he didn't trust the vaccines (or anything else) his predecessor was behind. It's pretty rich that now he's pushing them and he's "losing his patience". What a clueless tool.

Karma is a *****, and yeah some of us people remember what Mr. Magoo said, even if he doesn't ...

I’m with you. Any mask will be a chin strap for me. How can I have $6 beer to numb the poor value with a mask. FWIW as I drop through campus tonight sorority rush was in full swing with hundreds of girls packed on a lawn.

What are you using for metrics to support that opinion? Their NHL points per game are essentially identical at 0.66 points per game, although Sharp has 142 more games than JvR, so the latter will need to keep up that pace for a couple more NHL seasons. Another observation is that Sharp arrived in Burlington four years after the UVM hay days (1995/96 and 1996/97 seasons) with Martin St. Louis, Eric Perrin, and Tim Thomas, whereas JvR arrived in Durham five years after UNH consecutive FF appearances (2001/02 and 2002/03 seasons), although I agree that the UNH teams with JvR were not nearly as bad as the UVM teams with Sharp, and Umile was probably a better coach than Gilligan during those respective years.

I also agree that Vegas is probably way off in ranking UNH as high as 1/125 odds to win a NC this season, and 1/500 odds to place them along with Bentley, UVM, and Mac would be more appropriate. I still think that the gutless unwillingness of UNH to play Bentley this season is comical.

But, here is my question of the day. Are those who are unwilling to attend games at the Whitt if there is a mask mandate really just looking for an excuse not to watch a poorly coached bad hockey team get embarrassed game after game at home? As for season tickets, since I have qualified for senior discounted tickets game time at the window, I think that season tickets are for suckers in my age group, unless one is looking at these season tickets as charitable contributions to the Athletic Department at my alma mater, which I fully endorse, of course. If you cannot afford to donate funds for a $1.2 million football scoreboard, at least buy season hockey tickets. :-)

As for the mask mandate, It’s not an excuse to not attend games. I’ll go anyway good or bad team as it’s a family thing. I don’t won’t to sit and wear a mask for 3 hours. Vax no vax I couldn’t care either way. I just want to be comfortable, try and enjoy the games, and have a beer socialbles with people

This is how I'm seeing it as well. "New car smell" should work in Orono, maybe in Burlington too.

It's been a long long time since there was a new coach from outside the bubble in Durham ...

That wasn't what I was talking about. I was referring to the UNH-Merrimack exhibition game Saturday. I see it listed on CHN's app. Has it been cancelled or something?

Haven't seen anything on a UNH-Merrimack game, but the UMaine-Quinnipiac game on Saturday afternoon at Phillips Exeter Academy is still on Q's schedule on the ECAC site. Doubleheader maybe?

Merrimack UNH scrimmage is closed to the public.

I think that is a pretty poor decision. Fans haven’t been able to go for 18 months and what is the upside in keeping them out? I can understand not letting fans into a game like Maine-Quinnipiac where they are playing at a third party but why won’t UNH let fans go?

First of all, UNH admin doesn't give a rat's behind about their hockey fans. Let's make that clear.

I have no idea where the Merrimack-UNH closed scrimmage is supposed to be played (until today, I didn't know it was even a thing). Maybe Coach Borek has invited Coach Souza's guys to his old backyard rink across town from The Whitt for a friendly outdoor scrimmage and post-game cookout? If they opened up The Whitt for this, I'd be shocked if more than a few hundred fans showed up anyway.

FWIT dept I got my season tix today. Can't do the opener (Friday night game) so if anyone wants 2 tix for that, let me know...Go 'Cats!!! Make sure you read the info enclosed you will not get a separate parking pass; season tix have a foil seal around one end and that's what is going to be the parking ticket...

In reading the UNH admin Covid blurb in HR's post, sounds like all you need to do to avoid wearing a mask is "actively eat and drink" the entire game. :-)

Remember when NHL goal tenders did not wear masks?

So ... was there a UNH v. Merrimack closed scrimmage yesterday after all, or not?

FWIW looking at the 2021/2022 UNH schedule ... it looks like if UNH can get off to a decent start like they habitually used to do during the Umile Era, it could set them up for what appears to be a much softer schedule once the calendar turns to 2022.

Hard to believe the official regular season opener is set for five (5) days from today.

No excitement, no publicity, no anticipation ... nothing.

I certainly do, maybe not as well as you do Snives, but yes indeed - and vividly, too.

I've linked a video below on the subject, and if you'd like to supplement it with a trivia contest first, where some answers are either contained in OR hinted at in the video, here you go:

(1) True or False: starting his NHL career in Detroit, and finishing it up in the WHA in Indy, Brown is one of the few players to skate on the same teams as Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky?

(2) True or False: Gump Worsley retired in the early 1970's, was the second-to-last goalie to ever play mask-less, and also never wore a mask in his over 20 NHL seasons?

(3) Who was the last goalie to win a Stanley Cup while not wearing a mask, what team/season?

(4) Brown once held the NHL record for single season PIM's for a goalie. Who holds it now?

(5) Who was the last Bruins' goalie to play an NHL game without a face mask?

Union got dumped 5-2 by RPI in an exhibition yesterday - no word how UNH fared. Two seasons ago Union was dismal and they lost quite a bit since then with a missed year in 2020-21. I wouldn’t expect them to be very good - so the opening series could be telling for UNH (one way or another)...

Union has 10 or so first year players. Odd to say Arizona State should be the first real barometer.
Every kid growing up in Boston had one of these

Come on now! HR is excited lol...and willing to drive 1.5 hrs from camping to a game so that has to account for something? Go 'Cats! Yeah...weird nothing on Twitter from McMahon (is that his name the MC blogger) about any scrimmage? Didn't happen maybe? I'm gonna use my cub reporting skills to find out...bwahaha PS...as far as publicity goes, there's plenty of it on social media sites about the season, buying single game tix, etc...
