UNH 2020 Off-Season Thread: That Rinky-Shrinky Thang And Other Lively Banter :D

I guess fleecing a librarian out of a million counts for more than competent management of that million once on the books.

Good call. Appears that Marty took the dough, tossed a big chunk toward the stadium scoreboard and squandered the balance using the Dewey decimal system. :-)

So no UVM this season....BU must be bummed to play us as beating us prob. doesn't help their cause and us beating them prob. doesn't do much for us either. Oh well...hard to believe the season is almost over even though IRL it would be HE tournament time anyway?

He certainly seems a master of selling his awful record. I guess fleecing a librarian out of a million counts for more than competent management of that million once on the books.

Wasn't the librarian-donor's late-in-life conversion to an "avid UNH football fan" just a cover for misallocating his gift to the school to a more desired target by the school, as opposed to "fleecing" the donor and his family of the funds which were not targeted for the school?

You know there's no love lost between myself and the Monument to Mediocrity sitting in the AD's office, but I do think calling it a "fleecing" is a tad harsh, if the gift was going to UNH anyway?

Absolutely correct.

Correct. This is the classic case where one team (BU) has more to lose than does the other team (UNH) which has nothing to lose.

And speaking of losing....if the predicted result of Thursday's game comes to fruition, it will be the first time in 35 years that UNH will finish with a 5-win season. Now granted, the 5-29-3 record earned by the 1985-86 team ( aka Charlie Holt's "farewell" season) is a far cry from the 5-15-3 predicted final finish for the 2020-21 team (including a first round "one and done" in the HE playoffs).

But still ... it's not something that I would hang my Charlie Holt fedora on. :p :p :p

Here's how they 'spin' it....'not enough games to really reflect the kind of team we had'. Sounds harsh, I know. I'm sure this has been hard on the team...this year in general. Anyway...not sure if this is correct but a fellow fan and I were discussing who they might play in the first round and UML was speculated? If that's true, we might have a shot at advancing. Regardless...just never got it going this season and the whole thing seems surreal.

Rhetorical question: Is the reason that this thread is so popular (other than the catchy title) because our team stinks this season?

If somehow UVM sweeps Mac this weekend, would the double secret ranking system place UNH in the basement (aka 11th place)? Stands to reason, as Mac owned us this season.

Anyone wondering what might have been if Scotty Borek had become UNH head coach?

Unlikely UVM sweeps MC, though I'd imagine both games could be pretty interesting. Worst case scenario -- if the "Metcalf Math" does indeed put UNH in the cellar after this weekend....then "if the skate fits, then wear it".

As for Borek - After his "e-mail-Gate" FUBAR from about 10 years ago, I'm sure that he was pretty much placed in the doghouse as a UNH coach and never would have been able to trump "the annointed one" for the HC position.

Maybe it's time to start a 2020 "post-season/post season" thread soon?

LET'S GO 'CAT FOOTBALL TEAM!!! :-) :-)
(never imagined that I would be saying those words in the month of March)

Not really. I suspect UNH would have been an equally mediocre team. We saw what Borek was recruiting for UNH for over a decade, and the direction of the program over that stretch was not favorable, shall we say? So MC beat UNH a few times this year. So have plenty of other coaches.

Big whoop.

Let's put it this way. If you seriously ponder what glories UNH may have missed out on by not hiring Borek, you also probably believe Luce Canaan when he tells his recruits that his former boss hasn't won another D-1 title since he left for Storrs, and it was because of his (LC's) absence. Luce probably thinks he's biding his time in Storrs until BC calls him back to succeed his former boss. Luce is only slightly less mediocre than Borek and his former assistant MS7.

Ayers probably has a better shot at BC HC (slim) than Luce does (none).

My concern is BC may be looking to fill its job before UNH is. Think about that for a sec.

Someday a new UNH AD will get around to bringing UNH Hockey back to prominence.

I'd love to see MS7 do it sooner, but my faith in his ability to do so is on the wane ...

Max Gildon made his professional debut in Bakersfield tonight - seen below making a big hit behind the net, being challenged, then dropping the gloves and winning his first career fight...

https://twitter.com/Condors/status/1...836278785?s=20

He finished +2 in a 6-0 Condors win.

Dan, do you know if Gildon is still with the Florida organization?

Looks like he's moved from Syracuse to Bakersfield recently - I know the situation in the AHL is pretty fluid this season - but Syracuse is primarily a Tampa Bay affiliate, while Bakersfield is primarily an Edmonton affiliate. Ii think Florida's primary affiliate this season is in Charlotte?

Good to see him getting started at the AHL level, though. That hasn't been a given for most recent UNH Hockey grads.

Also, I noticed that younger brother Michael - who was subject of "Why didn't he follow Max to UNH?" discussion a couple of years ago, when he was skating with the USNDT program - has yet to score his first NCAA D-1 goal as a sophomore left wing at Ohio State. Maybe UNH didn't miss out after all??

Yes, Gildon is still with Florida - and based on what I've read they're still very excited about his prospects. The situation with Syracuse was tough, two rival teams (from a location standpoint, at least) sharing a development system stocked with young TB defenseman.

The Crunch had double digit defensemen on their roster, while Bakersfield had just six prior to receiving Gildon on loan (and adding a KHLer) - so he should be able to play consistently with the Condors, as opposed to sharing FLA reps on TB's affiliate in Syracuse. He is one of just two defensive 'prospects' on the team (under 24), so I'm sure they have general assurances for ice time...

As I understand it, the Canadian NHL teams with American affiliates have their active NHL rosters, along with taxi squads that remain in Canada (full of the AHLers ready to contribute, and who won't be subject to border crossing protocol, if needed) and then their affiliates in the States. So Bakersfield needed bodies and FLA wanted Gildon to pay every night; it should be a good fit for him...

Michael is not the offense first, creator of offense type of forward that UNH needs. I don't think he'd make this UNH team notably better - but he'd be a great fit on the UNH team's of the 90's and early 00's.

Now, West Lebanon, NH, native Tate Singleton (OSU) is the type of goal scorer the Wildcats could use. Not to mention Bedford's Alex Steeves (ND) or Ben Steeves (UMD) or New Hampton offensive defenseman Michael Kesselring (NU) or...while, i've got somewhere to be...
