UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Don't usually follow the recruiting too much but caught this in the recently released Globe All-Scholastic boys hockey team. He was one of the Globe's players of the year. Was he recruited by Lowell or is just walking on/trying out?

Cam Owens - Division 2: Wilmington, Senior, C
Owens tallied 21 goals and 25 assists in his senior year, leading the Wildcats to the Division 2 state championship for the second straight year. He finished his career at Wilmington with 72 goals and 86 assists and plans to attend UMass Lowell.
Probably just trying to walk-on. Or might not be planning on even trying, just looking to go to school here. As we've seen before, it's really hard to come up from public high school play right into Hockey East.

Lowell adds yet another...

Chris Dilks ‏@ChrisDilks 14m
Austin Bruins F CJ Smith has committed to UMass-Lowell. Played HS hockey at Holy Angels.
Smith is 5'11, 175, L shot forward. He's from Richmond, Minnesota, born 12/1/94. He had a 30-29-59 in 60 games (tied for 10th in the league), with a +21 for the Bruins. He had 6 PP goals and 4 shorthanded ones this year. For the 11/12 year, he had a 13-14-27 in 53 games.

A Minny-sotan?

Monty, any other defenseman in the pipeline other than Scrammon? If Folin leaves early like ruhwedel did, going to have a very thin blue line.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Well, there's been speculation that Lowell was going to start going after some of the bigger names ... and with that of course, you're going to lose more of those battles.

Trevor Olson just committed to North Dakota, but we were one of his finalists (along with UMD and St. Cloud).

Thanks to boblav for this info.

Bigger names or big names? I see no reason not aim higher so long as the type we bring in remains consistent

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Interesting to note ... UConn has two players on the just released CSB rankings (both for '14).

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

CJ Smith's Austin Bruins lost last night 2-1, and their season has now ended.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Assuming Heisenberg is an accurate record, and assume somebody is really bored, can somebody check out the rates of students who eventually make it to that same campus? Might be a bit tough if Heisenberg deletes as he goes along.

That being said, people in the know know who the offenders are... though I will agree it takes a bit more knowledge to do so.

edit: I'd say that if you want to go part of the way then verbals shouldn't be honored up until a certain date... say 17th birthday or senior yr of HS

USHL Phase 2 draft today (yesterday was '97s only)... and it was ... successful, putting it mildly, for Lowell.

Two future recruits were picked in the first round, Tommy Panico (3rd overall) and Nick Master (5th overall). CJ Smith (2nd round, 17th overall) and Colin O'Neill (14th round 203rd overall) could join Panico at Muskegon next year. Tyler Sifferlen (16th round, 230th overall) was taken by Cedar Rapids, where he could join Master. Ryan Collins was taken in the 15th round (201 overall) by Indiana.

Probably the most successful Lowell's ever been.

Lowell could have as many as 7 recruits playing in the USHL next year.
