Snoop Dogg at the Tsongas Center, wearing a UMass Lowell hockey jersey and holding a jewel-encrusted microphone. (Lisa Poole for The Boston Globe)

I wonder if he can put the puck in the net? :)

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

According to USHR as of 1/31/11:
Terrence Wallin has 15 points (5-10-15) for Gunnery in 8 games played.
Corey Scammon has 18 points (4-14-18) for Cushing in 21 games played.

Cushing (17-4-0) is ranked second and Gunnery (14-5-0) is ranked seventh in the latest DI Prep Hockey Poll.

That's an impressive amount of points for a d-man. I think Wallin will put up points here, but Scammon's numbers are definitely a plus.

Lowell just landed the top dman in the BCHL.... Great pick up and will be a fan favorite. Coming from the Vernon Vipers, who last year produced Gill and Nonnan at BU, Devin twins at Cornell, Collins at Merrimack and Jones brothers at Quinipiac. Great program and top team in BCHL this season.

Played previous 2 years at BC. He went there to young and is still only 20, will be a junior. with 2 years left.

Best place to follow if interested in Vernon is here. http://vipersdiehardfan.blogspot.com/

Is he the same kid that had played at BC?

Edit ... yes he is. Played at BC in the 08/09 season, so he started his college career very young. Played just 5 games for BC with 1 assist. So I'd assume he will be entering with 3 years of eligibility left.

Thanks for passing the word, you actually posted before Chris put it on his site.

2 years... hockeydb has him playing two seasons.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

he played 2 years at BC. Should be a freshmen now but it is what it is.

Will add a whole dimension to Lowell that they dont have. Will be the top skater in league, which is saying something. I know some of the pro guys are following as well. Vernon coach did an amazing job teaching him how to play position and it shows.

OK, two things ... first Hokydad's comment said he played at BC for two years, and I was just thinking the BCHL, so my bad.

Second, the BC player site only lists stats for one year, so I didn't realize that he'd been there two...

So he'll be transfering in as a junior.

I read it like that too, initially, and said "that can't be right"... its disappointing we're taking on a player with 2 years burned... granted, its better to have him than not... you see "top X in league Y" and you get your hopes up for a great 4 year player. I also think with the website thing that maybe they don't update the stats during the year.

Which is fair, but the year of stats missing is last year, so that's why I was surprised.

Lowell just landed the top dman in the BCHL....

Sounds like this young man - Malcolm Lyles - has worked very hard on his education and hockey during his time with the Vernon Vipers. Have to wish a determined player like this the best of luck.
In 46 games this season, he has scored 6 goals and 17 assists. He is not in the top 100 leading scorers in the BCHL and there are at least 18 other defensemen with more points. With the caveat that stats alone don't tell the whole story, what is it about him that makes him "the top dman in the BCHL"?

Nothing except hockey dope has always had a man crush on Malcolm Lyles. Just search back to when he was at BC. He probably waved back one time when entering a rink. For one, there is a 92 d-man headed to DU from the BCHL that is better.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

According to who? You?

John Lilly(this coming from a BU guy) , the head pro scout for Toronto Maple Leafs said that without question, he is the top dman in the league and was blown away with his improvement. The Vernon coach has a history of teaching and preparing kids for D 1, not fake points and then sit in the stands like some do in the wild west.

Problem with him at BC was very simple. Went to early, they neeeded a D. He was at deerfield and vefore that Eaglebrook, 2 schools who didnt teach but let him run around and get away on talent alone. BC didnt have time to do it as they were winnijng natl championships. The Vernon coach has and has speant a ton of time with him and he is playing very well. You mention DU. FYI, they were after him as well and offered but he wanted Hockey east. The Denver coach might disagree with you...... Was shocked he had not committed and offered on the spot after watching him over break

There you go with the name dropping again. I watch a lot of college, EJ, prep school and high school games, and am not nor would I ever consider myself an expert on the BCHL. I'm sure the Vernon coach is a good coach. However, I find it extremely hard to believe Jerry York and his staff (the best staff in the land over the last 15 years) didn't have the time to help him develop if he really has this great talent as you suggest. Yes, he was too young when he went to BC. I'm sure he will be good, but your assertion that he is the best d-man in the BCHL is laughable.
