UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Agreed. You are asking a kid who at 15/16 to make a decision that most kids at the age of 17/18 struggle with. The recruiting process just isn't fair to most athletes. Kids are offered scholarhsips and then told "well you are going to have to choose soon because we have to use it somewhere else". Some of the big name schools have been landing 8th graders/freshman in HS recently. Those kids haven't taken algebra let alone know where they want to go to college.

On the flip side, in situations like Stenglein/Roy, its frustrating for a team to see a kid break an inital commitment to go elsewhere. If they want to leave to play Major Junior and not deal with education, that I can understand because school isn't for everyone and MJ offers a completely alternative route. However, leaving just because the powers of college hockey are starting to whisper in your ear after a big season just doesn't seem right. Overall, the whole system is flawed and therein lies the beauty of the NCAA

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Chris Heisenberg is reporting that recruit JT Stenglein has decommitted from UML. No reason mentioned. Tough loss as he seems to be a pretty good player. Is it just me or are there more players decommitting from schools than there used to be? Gaudreau, Roy, Murphy, Girgenson (though he went pro), and that is just off the top of my head.
That just sucks.

Agreed. Going with Brian's statement, there's really no loss for the kid. Once he gets an offer (and makes a commit), the school is pretty much set with him (and no school wants to make a habit of taking a commitment and backing out), so in the meantime the kid can continue to look at other schools, put up his numbers and get more recognition ... which gets more interest.

This one sucks though. He was one of the first long-term recruits for Coach Bazin as well.

I agree... if he ends up with another HEA school I say bring out the torches.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Well, if nothing else, Coach Bazin is now getting commitments ...

6'1", 184 D Tommy Panico (Team Comcast U18s) just committed to Lowell. Born 3/24/95, he's listed currently as a '15 recruit.

He was listed as the #16 player that USHR saw at the Liberty Bell Games, essentially for players from NJ/Philly region.
16. Tommy Panico, D, ’95 (NJ Titans U16) 6-1/180—Good-sized defender with a long stride and the ability to move the puck up the ice efficiently. Is a bit raw right now and still has a long way to go, but Panico is certainly worth keeping an eye on. Will play for Team Comcast U18 in the fall. With Kerr, Citron and Panico it is hard to imagine another U18 team with three better defensemen.

Yes, I agree...or for any other school for that matter that UML plays. I remember that Pouliot kid a few years back who backed out of Lowell and went to UNH, we were merciless with him when he came to Tsongas. But he ended up sucking anyway so no big loss but this one could really hurt.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Former recruit of UML Colton Saucerman (I believe this was one of Blaise's guys) Has a goal and assist in two hockey east games. Pretty good start by the freshman.

It sounds like he's stepped right in and is getting regular ice time along with PP and PK time.

Well, we're definitely going hard after the BCHL (what MC used to do).

Also ... yet another 6' tall player. Every future commit that Lowell has is at least 5'11"...

Yes, It seems strange not to have a current recruit in the USHL.

Press release on Mueller.

Mueller Commits to UMass-Lowell!

Thursday, October 25, 2012 - Submitted by Cowichan Capitals

The Cowichan Capitals are pleased to announce that 1994 D-man Tyler Mueller has accepted a scholarship to UMass-Lowell.
"We are extremely happy that Tyler was able to achieve his goal of An NCAA Division 1 scholarship. Tyler had been approached by several schools, and when he was able to sit down and determine what was important to him in a school, he felt that UMass was the best fit." said Head Coach Jim Ingram. "We are very excited for Tyler and look forward to watching him develop in a Capitals uniform."

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Evan Anderson has been traded to Langley from Alberni Valley, so he'll be playing with fellow UML commit Evan Campbell now.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Tyler Sifferlin is heading out to Minnesota today with Team Massachusetts, as he'll be competing in the Bauer National Invitational Tournament, starting tomorrow.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Since Lowell is off this weekend ...

Evan Campbell was the #1 star for Langley last night, with a 1-2-3 in a 5-1 win. Evan Anderson didn't play for Langley.

Corey Scammon and Tyler Mueller had no points in a 3-1 Cowichan Valley win.

According to the Herald, Casey Shea is also part of Team Massachusetts in the Bauer Invitational. The Herald's roster doesn't include Sifferlin, but I know he's out there.
