UML Recruiting 2010 and beyond

Re: UML Recruiting 2010 and beyond

i'm very interested to see if they keep wright up front or move him back to the blue line. guess it depends on whether they feel there's more adequate cover on D or at forward.

Re: UML Recruiting 2010 and beyond

I'm not sure if it's right, but the Heisenberg site is currently showing Furlong as coming in next season.
There's three kids coming in next year that are '91s. Melchiori is the only one that'll be 18 when the season starts, Furling and Brickler will be 19 when the season starts.

My gut feeling is that they'll see how the rookie forwards do in prep for next season to decide. At this point, we're looking at 3 backup defensemen (if Wright stays there) and 5 forwards.

Just to give a comparison, UMass (if I did the numbers right) will have 31 players on the roster next season.

It will be interesting to see how things work out with the goaltending and defense. I think if the defensemen struggle you may see Wright back there, other wise I thinks he stays up front. If the D and goaltending struggle the forwards better be able to score some goals. Hopefully there is some speed coming in next year too.

It would be nice if Campbell and Edwards come back.

If he's even halfway decent, he needs to come in next year. The blue line is going to be less than stellar and will need all the help it can get.

i thought we were trying to avoid these massive classes... seems like we're going right back into this again.

Please tell me Blaise is considering red-shirts for a few of these boys.

He's flat out stated that he doesn't like to redshirt kids, and he hasn't done it often. Carr and Ickert come to mind. I'm really surprised that he didn't (or hasn't yet) redshirted Visca, because he wasted a year of eligibility otherwise.

I am also surprised about Visca. Why bring him in last season if he wasn't ready? He could have played another year of junior, he's only 18 yrs old. Blaise did say on the radio show that Visca would not be redshirted, and the reason he did not play was he couldn't crack the lineup. So I'm not sure what the expectations are for him going forward.

He may end up being another Stegnar, without even getting a chance to get on the ice.

well a) it's a little premature to paint the next three years of this kid's career as a total wash based on nothing whatsoever, b) stegnar had plenty of chances to play, and c) stegnar came in in a year with no one in front of him on the depth chart while visca had several hundred people in front of him

I agree with all these ... so why not redshirt the kid? As Bob said, it was pointless to bring him in that early if he wasn't ready.

Re: UML Recruiting 2010 and beyond

The Newmarket Hurricanes were crowned CCHL champions last night, with a 5-1 win at Bowmanville, winning the series 4-2.

Julian Melchiori had an assist and was a +3 for the game. His stats for the playoffs were 19 games played, 2-9-11 and a +7 overall.
The NHL Scouting Combine list is out (top 100 players available in the entry draft are invited). UML's Melchiori is on the list

Re: UML Recruiting 2010 and beyond

Some thoughts on two UML recruits that I've seen:

Arnold - kid will be big asset, struggled early in the year but finishing strong. Hard worker, good locker room guy, sees the ice well, good hockey sense.

Curry - has gotten better in his own defensive zone, but still needs to be stronger along the side boards when attempting to get the puck out of the zone and avoid turnovers at the blue line. But has improved in this area over the previous season. Springfield fans have nicknamed him "the wizard", and he does have very good hands but at times it looks like the nickname gets the better of him and he tries to do too many moves. In his offensive zone he does see the ice well and distributes the puck very well and looks to pass before shooting (as his 33 A to 17 G this season will attest).

Re: UML Recruiting 2010 and beyond

It looks like Northeastern is busy. I saw this on the USHR site.
Northeastern is on the warpath, and feeling bullish about their future. Head coach Greg Cronin and assistant coach Albie O'Connell went out to the NTDP Evaluation camp, liked what they saw from '94 forward Cam Darcy, and got a commitment from him (see below). Now they have added '94goaltender Jon Gillies, who was also at the NTDP camp.
I wonder if Lowell had anyone at the Evaluation Camp.

Regarding Darcy:
For the Huskies, this is a significant commitment simply because it breaks the mold. Until now, the best young Boston-area kids - the early commit types -- would hold out for BU and BC.

NU in the last 2 months has picked up 6 early commitments for 2011 and beyond. They're doing a good job recruiting, and Darcy and Gillies are both very good ones.

FYI - From the same article: Gillies teammate on the Neponset Valley River Rats Under-16 Team is '93 forwards Matt Salhany of Bishop Hendricken who has received an offer from Merrimack.

Re: UML Recruiting 2010 and beyond

Meant to do this earlier when I did the last batch, but here's the what the roster looks like for 2011/2012. I honestly can't see all 13 of this upcoming season's freshmen coming back, but we'll see. This roster includes all of them.

Here's what our roster would currently look like, and if someone spots a mistake, let me know:

Defense (9):
Senior: Tim Corcoran
Juniors: Chris Ickert, Colin Wright
Sophomores: Daniel Furlong, Julian Melchiori, Will Rayner, Chad Ruhwedel
Freshmen: William Eiserman, Colton Saucerman

Forwards (16):
Seniors: Michael Budd, Matt Ferreira, Michael Scheu, David Vallorani,
Juniors: Joe Caveney, Robert Visca, Riley Wetmore
Sophomores: Derek Arnold, Tyler Brickler, Nick Curry, Josh Holmstrom, Derek McCoy, Joe Pendanza, Shayne Thompson
Freshmen: Terrence Wallin, Scott Wilson*

Goalies (3):
Junior: T.J. Massie
Sophomores: Marc Boulanger, Doug Carr

*Making the assumption that Wilson comes in for this season.

So at this point, that leaves us at 28 on the roster.
