UML 2011-2012 Thread: Part II

Re: UML 2011-2012 Thread: Part II

I just got an e-mail from Merrimack Athletics (that's what I get for buying tickets online) saying that the Tsongas Center will be offering $5 tickets to the Saturday game if you show a ticket stub from the Friday game. Not a bad deal.

Ahahahahahaha! I just got a second e-mail, and I'm paraphrasing, "Errr - that's $5 off, sorry about that."

Out of work in 10 minutes, then off to Strip Mall College for the evening! :D

GO LOWELL!

Re: UML 2011-2012 Thread: Part II

Am I the only one who feels like they're coasting into the playoffs? 1-3 in their last 4 (assuming tonight is a big L)

I don't think they are coasting. Merrimack is a horrible rink for a team that relies on speed and getting going. Like bees in a small bottle. So small by the time they get going they hit the end wall. Carr sounding human tonight.

Re: UML 2011-2012 Thread: Part II

That wasn't pretty. Had to be over a dozen icings by the Hawks and almost as many 'whiffs' on passes that I don't think were caused by ice conditions. We need to get it together for tomorrow; play like that then and we're going to lose again.

Re: UML 2011-2012 Thread: Part II

If Lowell wins tomorrow night they clinch at least the 3 seed in Hockey East.

If Lowell wins one more game of the three remaining, OR Maine loses either of their last two, Lowell will clinch a home ice spot.

More importantly, we need to see a big game from everyone tomorrow night. Everything about tonight stunk on ice.

Re: UML 2011-2012 Thread: Part II

Not a lot to say, the Hawks got dominated tonight. The pressure is on, there's a lot riding on tomorrow nights game.

Re: UML 2011-2012 Thread: Part II

Simply put, the River Hawks were manhandled tonight both physically and on the scoreboard. Tomorrow night's game is simple, win the game and you will like have higher home ice seed. Once again, a physical team in a small rink bodes big problems for the River Hawks and it's cause for concern as they have to go to Providence next week.

I'm concerned for Doug Carr, pulled in the last two out of three games in consecutive weeks. The first two goals I thought were soft and Merrimack fourth goal off of a juicy rebound was a back-breaker. Is the #1 goalie schedule starting to wear him down?

Re: UML 2011-2012 Thread: Part II

If Lowell, BC, and BU all win tomorrow, I say give Carr a rest next Friday. Lowell won't catch BC in that case (they would just need one point to win any potential tb AND they're playing UVM @ Conte). 2nd or 3rd doesn't really matter. You're looking most likely at PC/UNH regardless.

For a team that had struggled to put the puck in the net recently it was just what the doctor ordered for Merrimack.

Re: UML 2011-2012 Thread: Part II

Regarding home ice importance... the biggest advantage of home ice, especially in tournament season, is line match-ups.

Example:
How would you line up your team against these BC combinations...
Almeida-Arnold-Whitney
Sit-Hayes-Kreider
Gaudreau-Mullane-Carey

That's how BC rolled them last night at PC. Today, BC is home team and has the advantage of rolling those lines any way they want to take advantage of any possible mismatches. Home team gets last line change.

As the visiting team, you throw out your #1 line, home team may roll a defensive line against them, letting their #1 line match-up against your #3 line. Home team can be a HUGE advantage, especially on neutral ice.

Re: UML 2011-2012 Thread: Part II

Just a disappointing performance overall last night. Honestly that first period was the worst I've seen this year, and while MC gets a lot of credit for coming out flying, the Hawks just didn't even see to bother to show.

That first MC goal was just a comedic disaster.

So this isn't just based off yesterday, I hate that rink. It takes away any of the speed advantage you have, and while there hasn't been much to blame Bazin on, I didn't think these guys were ready to play in this rink. How many icings in the first period alone by Lowell?

Have to come back strong tonight. Desperate two points tonight, not just for the tiebreaker, but to stay in the race for second (mainly for the reason that FiveHole12) just stated.

One final thing, big credit to the UML students for being loud all game. Unlike when the MC students came to Lowell and didn't make a peep (probably just amazed that their arena is so bad compared to the Tsongas), the Lowell students kept up the noise despite the score. I liked that. Bring it tonight, louder.

This is the time to see if Carr does have the stamina to last during the stretch and playoff run. It's not just on him though, there was no one player on the ice last night that had any semblance of a good game.

The kitty cats of UNH are making a yeoman's run at trying to preserve their home-ice playoff streak, in fact, they have a legitimate shot at still getting home ice. So we can't really say who we are playing because it could be any combination of them, Maine, PC, NU, and possibly, Merrimack. The four home-ice teams could be decided tonight by a simple result, Maine gets swept by NU at Matthews tonight.

The #1 seed was lost last night, BC pretty much had to slip on the road and we had run the table. With three home games remaining for BC, that's not going to happen. The problem is we can still catch BU for the #2 seed and simply win a game for the #3 seed so you have to play for thr both of them. Otherwise, you are backing into home ice. If you are locked into the #3 seed, then I will agree with you that sitting Carr could be considered, but now you have a different issue, NCAA ramifications. In short, it's a complicated question to answer and I don't think the answer is a good one because we don't have one thing. We don't have the goalie combination like a Hutton/Hamilton right now.

Agreed, IMHO, I thought last night's game was the worst game coached by the staff all season, save for the UNH whitewashing earlier this season, take your pick. Icings, missed passes, bouncing pucks, offsides, and poor decision-making. I thought the River Hawks struggled mightily in making quicker decisions on the small ice. On larger sheets, they would have had the time to make the decision and execute.

The Lowell students were wonderful, it's too bad they showed up and not the team (insert rim shot or shotgun clicking here)

Still have a chance to save face and the weekend tonight with a win. Time to wrap home-ice up and relieve the some of the pressure of next week.
