Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

I agree with pretty much everyone here that having Notre Dame join HE just plain sucks. I like the current format of playing each team three times a year and its awesome being within relative driving distance of every team in the league. With Notre Dame, that's a plane trip for sure. Yes, Notre Dame has been very good as of late and with a new facility will continue to be good, probably even one of the Hockey East elite. But they really just don't fit the Hockey East mold because of the university's size and location. It would have been much better off in the Big 10 or NCHC with its "peer schools."

I've seen lots of teams being thrown about as a possible 12th team to Hockey East. I'd be fine with UConn or Quinnipiac being CT teams, maybe RPI... What do other Lowell fans think of the possibility of ANOTHER team?

Though it's unlikely, the way the scheduling will have to be done when ND comes to HE, Lowell could potentially start to see some western teams come to the Tsongas. They'll have to fill about 12 games each year, and I hope they don't just schedule 6 against Bentley and 6 against AIC.

I don't think even if they went to 12 they'd do 11H/11A=22... I think they'll find a way to create some extra game for "rivals" say, UML-MC, UMA-UVM, UNH-ME, BC-BU, NU-PC, ND-???. That way you put in a few more games of interest... also note that a lot of scheduling is a leveraging game as well. That being said, if schedules open up across the rest of the nation then I'd like to see more of a 20-24 game conference slate.

edit: I'd like to hope our recent NC schedule is not a trend... like the western team scheduling but i'd also like to see more ECAC dates.

I'm thinking 2 divisions of 6 will be made and maybe 2 vs other division and 3 vs your own. That'd be 12+15=27 if I'm thinking this through correctly. That's the same # of games we play now, right?

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Finally game day.

Game preview and notes are posted on the athletics site as is the link for tonight's radio broadcast:

http://www.goriverhawks.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/100811aac.html

In addition, the hockey main page has this year's annual program book posted to the website.

Looking forward to listening to how the team plays tonight.

Edit: TIIL also has a preview for the game this weekend:

I couldn't make the game tonight and only heard portions of it on WUML. For the folks that were there how did the team look? Who stood out? I was surprised that Carr didn't play.

First period was scary. Looked up as things went on.

Definitely a young team but I was encouraged by some things I saw out there. Perhaps just looking for 'anything positive' after last year but I don't think so.

Random things I noticed:
We shot more and went to the net more than last year.
Pendenza had a couple really noticeable shifts and got the 2nd goal I believe.
Kamarass had a really bad shift near the end of the game - got beat at our blue line and then when he got possession in our corner did a blind pass up the boards to a UNB player. Couple other blind passes by other players as well were stressful.
Big thing was demeanor on the bench. Norm was a very calm, professional presence on the best. This isn't necessarily a good or bad thing, every coach has their own style. However, with the coaching and roster changes and things I've heard here and there, I think there's a much higher level of accountability than there was and Norm definitely has the team's attention. I think all of that will be a really good thing for us over the long haul.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

How did the Freshmen look? Based on the boxscore it looks like 15 forwards and 7 defensemen dressed, so most of the roster saw some ice time. Hard to tell from the radio just how much ice time some player's got, plus WUML lost the feed for half the 2nd period. Bob Ellis mentioned Wilson and Buco alot. How did Lyles look?

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

I thought the game progressively got better. First period as mentioned was a little hairy, but they progressed nicely. Had chances to ice the game in the 3rd period but just couldn't bury the puck. Pendanza made a great individual play on the first goal. Lyles definitely has a unique stride and likes to jump up into the play. He didn't get much PP time but he showed some good wheels. Wetmore played well and is just a great 2 way player. I believe the bad shift late in the game for Kamrass was actually Eiserman, he made a tough turnover in OT that gave UNB a quality chance. I thought Wilson/Buco/Wallin played very well and had a nice jump. Wilson is very smooth and fun to watch, the three of them would be an interesting line. Would have liked to see more out of Vallorani, he's the most talented player on the team but just has some lapses and tries forcing the play a little too much. Both goaltenders played fine I thought. 2 of the 3 goals were absolute bombs and the 2nd was a breakaway. PP definitely needs some work, too many shots getting blocked. They are still a young team and getting beat by a 120 ft stretch pass on the second goal was a sign of that.

Overall, you could tell the first shift that they were a different team than last year by regrouping in the neutral zone rather than just chucking it deep and forechecking. They were 1 broken stick away from a win so overall there were some positives.

Also, who was the sniper in the stands? the one ref fell three times in the first 10 minutes. I guess everyone needs exhibition games....

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Eierman struggled. Several bad decisions that gave up odd mans and more than 1 turnover including a brutal one in ot
Furlong looked solid and kept it simple
Lyles looked very good and will be a top 4 there, at least. looked like coach wanted everyone to be seen. rotated after 2nd period
they will be ok. NB beat Holy Cross night before and was lucky to tie. Lowell had 4 or 5 very good scoring chances over last 10 minutes but was stoned

2. Those sticks were like toothpicks. Valorani needs to figure out how to be part of the team. Looked like he was trying to carry too much by himself. He has gifted hands but passing is OK. They passed behind each other a lot last night. That should improve as they play more and get used to each other..

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Hoky, I don't see how anyone can take your opinion on lyles seriously given the bias involved. That being said, ya, maybe he did look good.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

My two sense of comments....

-- Thought that Robbins struggled against the bigger Canadian team. Was out of position and looked a bit lost, especially in the early going. Also was noticably moving around his head trying to see the puck because of the taller players creating screens. Didn't even see the rocket of their first goal and was beat cleanly on the breakaway. To his credit, settled down in the second period but I didn't see any flashes of brillance.

-- I was really impressed with the play of Tyler Brickler (#26) last night, beyond being in the right time in the right place for the goal. On the freshman defensive side, Jake Suter is going to be a good pickup for them.

-- In the things that never change department, we have to get out of the bad habit of giving up clutch goals after calling a time-out.

-- In the things the have change department, it was refreshing to see the team actually skate the puck into the zone on the power play.

-- The team is very small, I have concerns and think they are going to struggle, especially early against teams with a height and physical advantage.

-- Pendenza has the talent and the goods but can he do this to the tune of 1pt/game. If so, he could become a major player in Hockey East.

-- I did see a lot of signs of good things to come by some of the freshman, but signs of why this is going to be a bottom-half team given the large amout of underclassmen.

-- Curious to see how the team is going to deal with different size rinks over the course of the first few games, Tully (190x80 -- at best :p), Mankato/UNH (200x100), Conway/Tsongas/Alfond -- (200x85), BC (200x87), BU (200x90).

Off to Minnesota

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

49th out of all 58 in INCH's preseason rankings. Hopefully the team sneaks up on a lot of competition this year.

Anyone interested in seeing what Minnesota State looks like can catch the free video of their opening games against Rensselaer on RPI TV.

Listened to the audio this weekend but as has been said above, the feed was not great. Surprised not to see Carr, the only thing I can see is that he's the #1 and Bazin wanted to see how the others looked in a game. Seemed like the team spent a lot of time with possession which is nice. Also happy to hear Pendenza picking up where he left off by stripping defensemen and scoring on the resulting breakaways.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Minnesota State comes into this weekend's games at 1-1 on the year. They're ranked #43 in the aforementioned INCH rankings. They have only scored 2 goals in their first two games at RPI, winning their opener 1-0 and losing the next night 4-1. Senior Austin Lee got the shutout, while Junior Phil Cook gave up 4 goals in the loss. Sophomore forward Johnny MacInnis and senior D Cameron Cooper have the two goals.

Last year, Cook saw the majority of the playing time for the Mavericks putting up a 10-13-4 record with a 3.01 GAA and a 90.3% save rate, while Lee was 4-5-2 with a 2.59 GAA and a 91.1% save rate. Their leading returning scored is senior Michael Dorr who put up a 12-14-26 line.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Was at the Tsongas yesterday and things are coming along. The ice was installed and the painting of the lines is commencing. The team should be able to skate on it when they return from MSM. There is seamless glass along the sides but stantions will be noticeable in both end zones. I didn't check out the players benches but the configuration of the penalty boxes and scorers table has changed. The penalty boxes are larger than they were before. The scorer's area is a little bit smaller than it was. The rumors for next years construction include revamping the current luxury suites.

There's a whole level for suites where the single Corp Suite is, right? At least on that side of the building?
