Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

I don't know if others here pay attention to the other sports programs, but a quick recap of the fall season:

#4 UML Field Hockey won again last night, their 11th straight win to put them at 11-1 on the season.

UML Volleyball won last night as well, improving to 9-4 on the season.

UML Women's Soccer also won last night 2-0, their fourth straight win. They're currently on a 360 minute shut out streak, improving to 6-2-2.

All three of those teams beat Saint Michael's.

Men's Soccer won their fourth straight over the weekend to improve to 5-4 on the season. They play tonight against (of course) Saint Michael's. 5 of the remaining 7 games in the regular season for the Hawks are at home.

UML Golf finished 4th in the NE-10 Championships this past weekend.

Also, UML Basketball (#10 preseason nationally) will be playing Providence College a month from today in their pre-season game at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.

I get updates on Twitter all the time... it's funny when field hockey is playing. There's a new tweet every 5-10 minutes adding to the UML total. Last two games I remember following were 9-1 Lowell.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Leswp1: I can see you are being sarcastic, but what does Notre Dame joining Hockey East do for Lowell? Maybe a sellout at the Tsongas in the 2013 season? Not going to help admissions as I'm pretty sure most Notre Dame "fans" don't even know they have a hockey team, let alone what conference they play in.

I've made my position on this known in other threads today. Bertagna, once again, shows his true colours.

I have no patience for the big teams that have huge followings except for when they do poorly and then they all melt away. I was serious about the marketing thing. ND isn't really anything bigger than many of the other bigger schools yet they have the mainstream sports media salivating about them when they ignore programs that are equally good if not better. Why? Marketing. They have become a household name.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Notre Dame fans are the phoniest fans out there! I'm not talking about the true ND fans but the local ones that have no clue about anything.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

I agree with pretty much everyone here that having Notre Dame join HE just plain sucks. I like the current format of playing each team three times a year and its awesome being within relative driving distance of every team in the league. With Notre Dame, that's a plane trip for sure. Yes, Notre Dame has been very good as of late and with a new facility will continue to be good, probably even one of the Hockey East elite. But they really just don't fit the Hockey East mold because of the university's size and location. It would have been much better off in the Big 10 or NCHC with its "peer schools."

I've seen lots of teams being thrown about as a possible 12th team to Hockey East. I'd be fine with UConn or Quinnipiac being CT teams, maybe RPI... What do other Lowell fans think of the possibility of ANOTHER team?

At this point, probably makes the most sense to go to 12 teams ... and if so, I'd be OK with Quinni ... but my preference would be RPI. Not UConn ... no way, no how.

I've seen UConn basketball at the XL Center and Gampbel (UML/UConn exhibitions a few years ago) and I've been inside their football stadium for their outdoor hockey fest last year. They're all impressive facilities and while I've only seen pictures of the rink, it's hard to believe how little investment they put into hockey. Is it really worse than Merrimack before it did away with bleachers? I guess I'll find out first-hand in December, planning on making it to the tourney.

My only memory of seeing UConn hockey in person is the 13-1 drubbing Lowell gave em' like 10 years ago..

No, but it really misses the point. 2,000 seats with no real direction to expand. UConn's next item to build is a basketball training facility and the economic crunch put a hard damper on UConn's funds. I would sincerely doubt its even on their radar.

Since we are two years removed from Notre Dame's first game in Hockey East, my feeling is neutral. With conferences shuffling around in all sports (primarily due to greed by university Presidents and Chancellors for TV revenue for football), any current format in most sports are going to be eliminated. For so long, Hockey East fans have been spoiled by having all of its teams within the New England region and accessible via a car drive in six hours or less. This is a highly unusual setup for a major sport in a D-I conference. We all know about the ACC and BC, but the rest of the full D-I teams whom are in Hockey East have lots of travel as well. The America East conference is spread out from Orono to Baltimore County, MD. The CAA is spread out from Atlanta to Boston.

Adding Notre Dame to the league will do the following things:

On the positive side:

  • Add exposure to the Chicago-South Bend market for the New England schools. I can guarantee that a lots of people in Elkhart, IN haven't heard of Merrimack or think that Lowell is UMass-Amherst because they only heard the UMass part.
  • It will make the league more attractive to Western schools whom are the drivers of the conference reshuffing
  • The name alone unfortunately sells for the cash coffers of the Hockey East Association and the BC/BU/UNH of the league.

On the down side:

  • Notre Dame is not an easy place to travel, even by plane (connecting flight or 16-20 hour drive)
  • No offense to my school, but there isn't a fair comparison to UML and even Merrimack to Notre Dame. There are parking lots at Notre Dame bigger than Merrimack's campus and another hurdle for recruiting to cope.
  • If the league does make it an even 12-team contest, I think UConn does become that team so that the men's and women's teams play in the same league. The reason I would be upset about it is that it would be forced.

They were either going to the NCHC or to Hockey East and I think they did that because they would have more success in Hockey East. The unfortunate part is that I would agree with that thinking

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

For what it's worth, New Brunswick has fallen 3-0 to UNH and 7-3 to Maine so far this week. They play at Holy Cross tonight.
