Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Congratulations to the entire UML team and fans for the thorough whipping they put on my Terriers last night. No excuses from this fan. Your guys went out and played 59 minutes and 42 seconds of dominating hockey.

Good luck as the season continues. Hopefully the Terriers will provide a better opponent over the next two meetings.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

So yeah ... that happened. And it didn't suck. Not in the least tiniest bit.

I kept thinking last night that last year's team would have folded their tents after giving up a goal that quick. Nothing against those guys, but it honestly never felt like there was any ... I don't know the right word ... behind them. Support, emotion, heart? Fair or not, that's what it felt like.

Last night, completely different. This quote says it all:
"We had two objectives tonight," said Bazin. "The first was to score the first goal and the other was to win the game. We realized quickly that we couldn't get the first one, so we put it behind us and went for the game."
Great student crowd tonight as well. And while I'm not a UMass fan (obviously), fun to walk away from the night with both the state schools beating ranked private schools. And the Bs with a 7-0 win didn't hurt either. ;)

I said before the season that we were really going to like Wilson and Wallin. So far, yeah ... they've been fun to watch. Their skill with the puck is so amazing to watch. Add Conderman in when he (hopefully) recovers from his injury, and there's a future at Lowell folks. A good one.

Thanks. Appreciate it. Hopefully your visit (game notwithstanding) was pleasant.

The result certainly was not what I'd hoped for and my kids couldn't last to the bitter end but it was a good college hockey environment and your student section seemed to enjoy every minute of the drubbing.

Hope they did. We don't get many of these to enjoy; might be awhile to the next one. :)

It's been a long time since I've walked out of the Tsongas Arena/Center and used Monty's quote..."and it didn't suck". I've never seen a game where Lowell's alumni section was completely deflated and at a rock-bottom low (see BU goal seconds into the game thinking it's going to be a long year) to an all-time high (we just delivered BU its most embarrassing loss in Lowell history and maybe we are back on the trolley tracks in front of the arena)

Forgot about last year's team, I haven't seen confidence by a Lowell game like this since 2001-2002, and possibly back to 1996. Getting back to last year's team, I think the word is doubt, because there was none in the game I watched last night.

This freshmen class has shown some good talent that executed with precision last night. Let us not forget our sophomores; Arnold had a hell of a night and is starting to produce some numbers that we were looking forward to seeing last year. Agreed with comment about Thompson, he had a good two-way game and Dan Furlong is light years away from where he was last season. Millan looked like Robert Green on that goal from Furlong. To quote a famous English announcer, "a schoolboy could have made that save." Give credit to Furlong by throwing it to the net and seeing what happens. That's the type of goal that Lowell has been devoid of for years. Pendenza looks like he starting to warm up too and resume his scoring prowess from last season as well.

Millan was completely different netminder than the one whom shut us out in 2009's HE Final and BU's coverage and especially passing by its defensemen was absolutely deplorable. I lost track of how many times Lowell beat, intercepted, or outright stole the puck from the defenders and even some of its forwards.

This was a win this program desperately needed, in front of 5,000 people, and also their biggest home win in quite some time. It's been that long, I can't even think of a statement game like this in the past five years which compares and probably it's been much longer. I'm sure Meehan and pals were grinning like the Chesire Cat from upstairs.

The building blocks are there for a promising future but here's an interesting stat. In the first six games last season, Lowell's GFPG/GAPG was 2.50/4.33. Over the same time frame this season its 3.67/2.83. :eek: It's still early but that's a gigantic turnaround that I hope continues well into this season.

PS: Speaking of Conderman, does anyone know his status??

UML XC team won the NCAA regionals yesterday at Franklin park. They are heading to the nationals next weekend. Awesome to watch and a nice crowd there to watch them.

I don't like when Chaz Scoggins tries to be Kevin Paul Dupont. I wonder if he is intentionally going for "Groan inducing pun".

LOWELL -- For at least one night anyway, UMass Lowell displayed hockey's version of the Midas Touch: It seemed everything the River Hawks touched turned to goal.

I listened to the game and it sounded like Lowell controlled the play of the game for about 95% of the tilt. It seemed like BU started the game looking forward to Merrimack and by the end of the second they were really looking to just get out of Lowell alive. Probably was a long bus ride home alternating between Parker rants, awkward silence, and threats of a long week of practice. It will be interesting to see what happens in the BU/Merrimack game on Friday.

Tempted to catch the game Saturday night in Maine then do some skiing the next morning at Sunday River.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Didn't see this mentioned, and if it was I apologize, but UML basketball gave D1 Providence all they could handle in their preseason game, losing by just 1 on the road.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Lowell has 9 games to go before the UConn Hockey Classic at the end of the year. 8 of those are HE games while the other one is against UAH. The schedule has been odd and will continue to be so through those 9 games.

@Maine for two (hoping for at least a point as we all know Alfond is a house of horrors).
@UNH
UMass
UAH
UNH
@UNH
BC
@Northeastern

Tough stretch but hope to see wins against UMass, UAH & Northeastern. Hopefully pick up some points against UNH as well. Will be done with BC and UNH after this stretch. What does everyone else think?

Also noticed that Lowell has 6 home games in a row from Jan 28 - Feb 17.

A very tough stretch of games. If the team continues to play like they did against BU they should have a good chance in all those games. Hopefully they can continue their forward progress up at Maine this weekend. UNH has turned it around after a terrible start so those games will be very tough. At least they get another shot at BC at home where they played them tough in their first meeting. It will be intersting to see where they end up at the break.

A little off topic but what do you think about the changes at Tsongas? The 15' behind the goal has treated Lowell well at home as they play behind the net. Alfond is a different story.

I would divide that around the UAH game.

My target (see earlier post) for the initial stretch (H/H vs. BC, BU, 2 x ME, @UNH, UMA ) was and still is five points. They are already +2 ahead of my thoughts because I did not have them beating anyone until at least one of the two in ME or even the UMA game.

If they play with the same level at they did with BU, I would be very surprised if they came away empty-handed from Maine, even given their struggles in Orono. UNH is a bonus game if they take any points.

However, I don't have go into many details that the UMA game is a must win in more ways than one. If Lowell want be stripped of the label of ten-place team to a HE playoff contender, they have to win all of the home games against UVM, PC, UMA, and to a certain extent, Northeastern. Also, we know what type of baggage that game will have for a reason that we are all more than aware.

By the 19th, if they have five or more points, that would be a real hell of a start considering their schedule.

The UAH game is a good tune-up game to get healthy, and more importantly I don't think they will make the same mistake as they did with UConn.

Second part (H/H UNH, BC, @Northeastern)

With two home games against Big Four teams, I'd really like to see the River Hawks grab three or even four points here. That would put them for a total of nine points in their first eleven games with some sixteen HE contests left. To put it into perspective, they only had ten points for the entire year last season and be done with BC and UNH. That's really not a bad place to be in a weak league after the first semester.

While it's true that Lowell has a nice six-game homestand from 28 Jan to 17 Feb, they pay their dues in long-distance travel from 13 to 27 Jan going (@UVM, H/H NU, Tues @ PC, and then @UMA). With a lot of bye weeks coming early in the season, they will be constantly playing from 13 Jan to the end of the season. It will be interesting to see how that will impact the River Hawks as we head into the home stretch. Let's get through the first semester before worrying about that.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Nice win last week. But this weekend we return to reality as I predict my Black Bears to win big.

Should be a great series

Big Papa has now graced us with his presence on the UML thread. Big Papa, no one likes you. Please go away. I'm impressed with UML so far. I think they have some good forwards who can cause some havoc. I've always liked Vallorani, Wetmore and Perreira. I think Arnold will get better and some of the freshman forwards have looked good. I can see some games where they can outscore opponents this year, but the defense is what will hold them back in my opinion. Right now, I like UML to make the playoffs. UVM and UMass are who I see as the odd ones out.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Is the line of red bars an indicator of the flame factor? Haven't the slightest idea how Maine is doing this yr but after watching UML the last few times the outcome is tba until it is done. Used to be that Alphond wasn't our friend but I recall a very happy Mr. coming home at least one trip in the last few. no matter what we at least we like our coach :p :D
