Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread
I'm happy.
The River Hawks finally held a two goal lead in probably the biggest win in any regular season because of the fact that 2/3 of it was on National TV with a Top 10 ranking to boot. I forgot to post that we were probably going to get screwed by that soccer game; second time in a row for UNH. But the SEC is going to win every time over Hockey East.
Certainly, it wasn't the easiest win in Lowell's history but very important. That third period was probably the best period Lowell's ever played in the Tsongas Arena, from all standpoints. A lot of Western votes in the poll were probably watching this one to check out Lowell and did not disappoint.
I don't know what was said in that locker room between the 2nd and 3rd periods but there were two hockey games in one. If UNH had a penalty kill, it's a lot closer. Ben Holmstrom was the key to the game. The PP goal :38 or so seconds in starting the UNH meltdown and Lowell took full advantage of a very questionable call to put us up 5x3 (we aren't used to getting those call for us). I'll tell you one thing, I didn't think that was a penalty but good teams capitalize on those mistakes.
First place in Hockey East until Friday, 3-1-1 in playing NU, 2XBU, @UVM, and UNH. Certainly not the record we've seen historically against these teams in the past With a non-conference series next week at UAH and league games with Merrimack, @Providence, and Maine to come, Lowell has the potential to really make a Top 5 statement to wind up November if they take care of business for this month. One advantage for Lowell is none of the league games are back to back...all singles. The big disadvantage is that all of these game are trap games and unless Lowell brings the A game, upsets could be lurking.
Because of cost and a last minute trip to Chicago, I won't see the River Hawks at a rink until the Providence game Tuesday before Thanksgiving. They did get 4000 today which was OK considering a Sunday game and Patriots. Will be very interesting to see what Merrimack and Maine draws. I'd really like for the Merrimack game to have at least 5000. (I probably will be heading to Merrimack on Friday to watch that BU game, the story lines are intriguing to say the least. Maine won't draw because of Thanksgiving but the UMA game on 12/5 would be a 6500 seat sellout, especially if Lowell can keep the unbeaten streak alive.
Been a long time since a start this big....let's keep it going one game at a time.
